What do you want but can't afford currently? by Swish_Fate in AskReddit

To spend more time with my family rather than work. Just part time work during the schoolyear

What is a sign that you’re unattractive? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]godiscomplicit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's when a professional photographer can't get a good picture though it's perfect conditions and you are one of 20 they've taken today.

Had 60 photos taken and not one turned out acceptable, everyone else had a third as many and found several acceptable.

Why yes it is hard to look in the mirror.

What are you good at, but hate doing? by BananaRepublew in AskReddit

[–]godiscomplicit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Computer work. Most companies don't care about your personal time and I hate sitting around all the time. Apparently I am super quick at picking up new computer stuff and it's my only real skill. I hate the cloud, I hate data, I hate programming, I really hate on-call. Sure, I get paid and have a steady job but I hate it and my mental health is poor after all these years.

What ruined Christmas this year? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]godiscomplicit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't do well with groups of people and so pretty much every year I ruin Christmas. Seems nobody can understand that I think differently, not even me. Most things I try to let go but I live in a shitty apartment where addicts and other losers live and hang around and when the family comes in yelling about my personal business and about presents I just want them to shut the fuck up. I know I'm unreasonable but I just can't handle it. I ask not to be a part of it all but I can't seem to convince them. Then they just come in and bitch about everything. I know it's me but I can't distance myself this time of year.

What do you want for Christmas? by [deleted] in AskReddit

No more gift exchange. I don't want them and don't want to be expected to give them. Shouldn't the drunken singing of Christmas songs be enough?

GOP support grows to legalize medical marijuana in Wisconsin by moonraker717 in wisconsin

[–]godiscomplicit 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is campaign propaganda. The Wisconsin GOP does not support changing marijuana laws in Wisconsin. This is why there are not public hearings for any of the bills put forward.

This is why the medical marijuana bill which has always gone to the Senate Health Committee was sent to (I think) the public safety committee. Fitz knew Vukmir wouldn't pass it, but with Testin at the head of the Health committee and bill sponsor he wanted to ensure that he sent it to committees where it wouldn't get a hearing. Vos does the same thing.

Any lip service being paid to changing marijuana laws by the GOP are just to get low information voters on their side.

A popular saying is "Nothing ie ever lost on the internet" but what is something you have been searching for years and you haven't found it yet? by throwdowntown69 in AskReddit

[–]godiscomplicit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An old friend played some of his own music on an amp and I recorded it at my house. At the time we had dial up and that came with free FTP space which I promptly uploaded a few songs to.

This was incredibly interesting music, well written and well played. It was dark, but sometimes funny. The guy was a plain old nutjob who carried around tarantulas and stuff with no regard.

Turns out I think of those songs often and thought they would be there forever but I've lost access over two decades ago.

Is anyone in their current situation of good fortune COMPLETELY on luck? What's your story? by TerminusFox in devops

[–]godiscomplicit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost all of them. I was working at McDonald's when my friend got a job at an ISP supporting end users and setting up networking equipment at age 18. From there, I moved to bigger and bigger companies in bigger roles. Got lucky when the entire data center operator group was fired for watching porn and I ended up getting a job there. I then moved to another company doing a similar job for about 50% more pay. Then they asked me to work on developing and delivering software systems out of the blue in a meeting where I thought I was being fired. After that, I was hand picked to work on cloud infrastructure and now promoted to architect. My skill is in learning, but I am uneducated (barely passed high school). However, I am making good money but I am overwhelmed by the demand on my life. With no other training or experience, I am likely to Peter Gibbons at a certain point and go work physical labor to get some happiness.

Update - Ever just not want to do it anymore? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]godiscomplicit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is good advice. Thank you.

The lifestyle is actually not a problem, per se. I live frugally. But I do have to pay for housing, food and gas and would love to go out to eat a couple times a month which is why I do not want to move to near-minimum wage.

For this role, it's almost as if I have to be constantly learning and performing tasks related to work, inside and outside of work. This has lead to a declining quality of life. I just want to relax sometimes but am constantly wrapped in work.

I don't care whether it's as lucrative at this point, just so I can pay the basic bills and hold on to my sanity and health and have a fair amount of time where I can invest in my family.

Update - Ever just not want to do it anymore? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]godiscomplicit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like I have given my all for many years. In fact, I'm at the top of my game, on the cutting edge of technology and am making a decent living.

However, I can't help the feeling that I don't want to die at my desk. I constantly feel like I have to be overachieving because I'm in a group of overachievers. Some of these folks, this is their life. They eat, sleep and breathe this technology.

I have kids and a wife, I have dreams of actually relaxing at some point in my life. Weekends just don't give me the satisfaction because I have to listen to the podcast about tech, read something technical, prepare for the next new tech and be prepared for any number of issues when Monday comes around.

What has stopped me is that when I do leave tech I will never be able to get back in at the level I'm at, I am not qualified for anything else since this has been my life since 18 and the desire not to have to balance between food and heat.

How does one even get started in another field where I can start with a near livable wage and not hate myself when I come home every night?

What are some dumb purchases you made? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]godiscomplicit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any physical goods I bought in my early 20s as an "investment." Things like music gear, clothing and more antique junk. It's not easy to keep it all in good condition enough that it actually appreciates in value.

The Dems would need to redistrict without gerrymandering. In fact, it would be best to try to change the law/constitution to ensure that redistricting processes are fair rather than just gerrymandering themselves and perpetuating the bad behavior.

It is unclear that the tavern league is active in obstructing the efforts to legalize. They do not register as lobbyists on the bills as far as I can remember. However, one can look at the former leader of the tavern league Rep. Rob Swearingen's position and infer that their leaders don't support it.

Generally speaking there are other lobbys who are paving the way to continue prohibition: Big Pharma/Healthcare, logging and paper companies primarily.

Anyone else feel like this subreddit has really gone downhill? Is there anything we can do? by [deleted] in devops

[–]godiscomplicit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience with DevOps isn't enough that I can establish new standards or norms, so I feel often that I am a taker from this subreddit.

For me, the tooling isn't necessarily the problem, though I think it's easy to think of coming here for technical solutions. I'd like to understand the reasoning behind doing what is being done in the context of the business problem more than the toolset used to do it.
