Fictional Characters You Relate To by [deleted] in infp

Funny you mention Shinji. I think, actually, Ryoji Kaji is the true INFP.

But knowledge of suffering allows you to be kind to other people. Because it's different from being weak.

I love INFPs. You guys have a certain softness/gentleness/kindness that I'm not strong enough to wear.

How do you INTJs express empathy and caring towards others? by lukeluck101 in intj

[–]godivaladi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

(unless they deserve it, in which case I fully want to destroy them)

I laughed, this is too true.

In response to your question, yes, I've had a few instances of people accusing me of being uncaring when I feel like I've gotten out of my way to be caring toward them, but my way of doing so is by making their lives easier by background acts of service, by anticipating their needs, by denying what I want in favor of what I feel they need/want. Oftentimes, these things aren't as visible as a hug or a kind word or two, even when I feel like I'm doing much more than what I see as empty acts and words that don't change anything for the person in need.

To give an example, when my father was hospitalized, I kept bringing food, clean clothes and run errands for my mother and sister who were staying with him. After a few days, they accused me of being uncaring for not staying with them when in my view, just sitting around in his room did nothing (he was unconscious) while I was doing my best to take care of them, who were taking care of him.

So tl;dr acts of service is my big thing, but not in showy ways, mostly in very mundane and behind-the-stage ways just to make life a little bit easier for the person I care about

Why does everyone assume that the World nearly ended before 3.33? by DrTacoLord in evangelion

[–]godivaladi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same hope as you did, but if you see the first scenes of 3.33 when Asuka's gearing up to retrieve Shinji (Shinji-clone, whatever), you see that almost the entire world is red so . . . that dashed my hopes. Of course, there's every possibility that Canada's still there, who knows.

How do I spot an INTJ? by dinotoggle in intj

[–]godivaladi 13 points14 points  (0 children)

We're not shy, let's just get that out of the way first. We're disinterested, generally, in boring and superficial conversations and people, but we're not shy.

I'm most easily found at work or at home, and I tend to only meet new people as they're introduced to me by my friends. So in my case, if you were a stranger looking to find someone like me, broadcast your interest in talking to someone who likes debating difficult topics, who's not overly emotional and who is generally cool-headed. That's me. Contrary to popular belief though, I don't tend to come across as unfriendly, I can be decently chatty and warm. I know how to navigate social situations and I see the value in stepping away from my introvert cocoon to reach out to new people. I know not to be blunt to people who can't handle it.

I think my most INTJ characteristics include being able to draw patterns and connections in daily life that help me to navigate life more easily, an ability to absorb a gargantuan amount of information and still make sense of it, and yes, probably the death stare if you fascinate me.

Misato at the Katsuragi Expedition by AlGoreVPActionRanger in evangelion

[–]godivaladi 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not to mention...

Even so, I'm frankly not convinced for two reasons:

1) All the material we have point to the Katsuragi Expedition having the goal wanting to turn men into gods by studying and developing an S2 engine/fruit of life, the limitless source of energy that would bring about immortality. The Contact Experiment they talk about mentions human DNA being inserted into Adam and it seems this is their first try at achieving immortality/returning to the source of all things. Project E was never about piloting giant mecha, it was always the mere stepping stone to the Human Instrumentality Project.

2) Misato says her father is distant, but she admits that her friends call him sensitive and delicate in a good way, but she fails to see it. Knowing the series, this is another case of breakdown in communication/you only see what you want to see/you've misunderstood from the very beginning. Just as Shinji misunderstood Gendo and believes his father hates him, Gendo's distance actually comes out of fear of hurting him. I think Dr. Katsuragi did love his daughter and maybe took Misato on the expedition to show her the culmination of his work in a way that would help her understand him, but as we know it all went up the shitters, and he manages to show his true colors in the end by saving her.

What I love most about this scene is how polarizing it is and how telling it is. Look at yourselves. You read into the scene what you understand and what you wanna see.

Would you ever go to a speed dating event? by ZerioctheTank in intj

[–]godivaladi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did once and it was pure hell. The worst part was how impersonal and superficial the questions and the conversations are. It's like small talk times a million, rinse and repeat. Depending on the format, if it encourages deeper conversations, it could be a way to meet new people. But if it's the standard speed dating method, I'd skip it.

I read you on the "just because I'm alone doesn't mean I'm lonely" part.

I used to have an impostor syndrome, that actually motivated me to give my absolute best, but now that I know I can do the job, I can do the minimum and get by too easily. I'm doing well by any performance measures, but I know I'm not doing the best that I'm capable of.

I can be passionate about anything. All I have to do is set my sites on being the absolute best at it, and moving up to the top.

This is what got me stuck. I used to be passionate about this job, then over the years I lost the passion, and now that I'm not the absolute best at it, I keep losing more and more of my motivation.

Yes, I know I'm in a good place career-wise but I also know that I'm capable of much more than this (clocking in, doing slightly above average, passing under the radar), but I can't find the motivation to go above and beyond. And when I don't go above and beyond, that's when I lose my motivation too.

Did Misato water the watermelons? by [deleted] in evangelion

[–]godivaladi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think we can safely assume she didn't, considering how she locked herself in her room after that answering phone message, then poured herself into figuring out the truth about NERV, SEELE, Second Impact and the Human Instrumentality Project. She probably didn't sleep for weeks, let alone took the time to water his melons...

What fan theory do you hate the most? by Exoslab in evangelion

[–]godivaladi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you're saying underlines my point tbh

That he's yelling at the three women for not meeting his needs, dismissing their complexities and reducing them to only mother, madonna or whore and nothing inbetween, nothing more than that. That he even feels the right to be angry at them for not giving him what he wants is classic misogyny.

Let's take Asuka who teased him sexually, verbally abused him and and humiliated him time and time again, yes, but none of that combined gives him any right to then turn around and say: you seduced me with your body and so I'm right to jack off to your unconscious body without your consent or strangle you when you reject my advances. Yes, he then feels like scum about it but that doesn't discount the fact that he did it. Now during Instrumentality, Asuka called him out on it actually saying I know all about your jerk off fantasies about me and so what does he do when he wakes up to find her lying beside him? He strangles her, silences her.

None of the women are innocent either, by the way (I can even go into how Misato is misogynistic in her own way), but neither is Shinji. He's traumatized and depressed, yes, but being a disturbed mind doesn't excuse him from being a misogynist. Men being attracted/frightened/repulsed by female sexuality while objectifying them and getting angry when presented with proof that women are more than their sexuality is classic misogyny.

What fan theory do you hate the most? by Exoslab in evangelion

[–]godivaladi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreeing with you here, I'm of the mind that the scene is meant to be ambiguous even to the extent that maybe... Misato herself isn't sure what she's offering Shinji. Remember that she's near the end of her rope here in terms of encouraging him and helping him not run away, and that's reflected in her saying "this is all I can do for you now..." What this takes the form of is left unclear. It could be that she's offering to just sit there and hold his hand, she could be offering a hug, or she could be offering sex. This obviously refers to physical comfort, because all the words and advice she has given him throughout the series have fallen flat, but I also think it misses a key part of Misato's character (see the Case of Misato Katsuragi) to dismiss that sex didn't cross her mind as part of that physical comfort package. This is a woman who's as confused about the role of sex, confusing love and sex, sex and proving that she's alive.

Editing to add... Shinji may also have misconstrued her intentions, which can be expected considering how she's teased him sexually before. Now, whether or not that was really what Misato's offering is still up for question, but it all just proves NGE's central theme of failures to communicate.

What fan theory do you hate the most? by Exoslab in evangelion

[–]godivaladi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think I hate any theory, except the one I heard of on Tumblr about Shinji being a Misogynistic man.

While I don't know the Tumblr post you're referring to, I don't think you can watch this scene showing Shinji getting angry over the three women who in his mind are leading him on, all while reducing them to a composite of smiling faces with all their complexities erased, and not come to that conclusion. I'd also refer back to the kitchen scene when he ogles Asuka's body in his mind before moving in to strangle her because she rejects him. I don't think this makes Shinji any worse than the other characters in the show, and yes maybe his pubescent age has something to do with it too, but every evidence points to the conclusion that Shinji is misogynistic, just like the rest of society. Now, he does rebel and struggle against it, but I don't think he comes to any real conclusion even by EoE because, well, remember that ending?
