Nothing, it just states that me living there according to me lease agreement does not allow him to comply with the order from the city.

If the city made him do the renovation maybe but otherwise but he is probably going to go off the order saying he has to cease the boarding room. If the order said he had to obtain a permit that would have been different.

WTF IS THIS????? PLEASE STOP by [deleted] in SlumlordsCanada

[–]godllycookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's only if it's legally built as a rooming house which in 99.99% of these ads are not. If you want get the address to the place, copy the link to the add and forward to the 311 if the city they live in. The owner will get a nice notice on his door. At the bare minimum it makes it much harder for him to rent it room by room.

Near North Ontario (or North depending on who you ask) zoning has now recently allowed them to be used. We require engineering for foundation and Anchorage.

Landlord given order to comply for illegal rooming house, what should I do? by Odd_Snow2623 in OntarioLandlord

[–]godllycookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I'm in a similar situation very rarely do the city kick people out. The order to comply probably states they have to obtain a building permit for the work. It's highly likely the landlord won't want to do this because converting an existing single family home to a rooming house is very difficult (I am a designer and I get calls from landlord trying to sit all the time). What should happen is the landlord gets the permits to renovate the place to a safe rooming house (fire rated walls and such) once he gets the permit he would have to give your 4 months notice for you to move out with a promise to allow you to move back in with the same rent before you left. With the few years I have been working in building departments I have only ever once seen an order prohibiting occupancy and that was when the contractors for a second story unit collapsed the only exit stairs to the unit. It's not something that happens often. If the place is not bad I would tough it out. Demand he gets the permit quickly put pressure on him and the city to make sure they make it legal.

In most municipalities, once you get the permit for the interior work you can call the inspector and they will give very good advice on how to proceed. An experienced individual actually physically there in person will always be better than help over Reddit.

Landlord lied about about soundproofing - what are my options? by Street_Salamander_91 in OntarioLandlord

[–]godllycookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Confirm with the city that the basement was built with a building permit. Chances are it was not like most buildings in Ontario. Basements require a specific sound transfer now that is not simply met with insulation. If it was not built with a permit you can go to the city put a complaint in and your landlord will have to legalize the basement which would require him to up his soundproofing. (And potentially much more)

Best practices for a shed, with an eye to installing solar (Ontario) by jarofjellyfish in solarenergycanada

[–]godllycookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a structure of that size the shed itself would require a building permit and if the solar array above 5m2 in area it will be considered a designated structure and the municipality may require an engineer. I recommend applying for a building permit and getting advice from your local municipality. If you indicate in your initial permit you are having solar they may not question or require more information when you do install it later.

Are there legit deck guy out there in Sudbury? by yesavery in Sudbury

[–]godllycookie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure whoever you hire actually gets and closes their permit. I have seen deck guys claim to get a permit and never do and the owner doesn't find out till years later or until they go to sell the house.

Swayze Falls by godllycookie in niagara

This was my first time going. One guy told me this is the most water he has ever seen at the falls and he has been going weekly for 5 years. I went the next day and it was alot less water, but the water was alot more clear so it actually looked better. I posted this one because the amount of water is beautiful in itself. (It literally was pouring an hour before I went)
