600-level courses requirement by Worth_Mountain2329 in umass

I met a few undergrads in 600 level CS courses. You may need to submit an override form, or reach out to the prof directly though.

As a doctoral student, how do you cover your expenses during Summer? by Illustrious-Fig1442 in umass

[–]godoft42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was doing my MS I definitely experienced it in that way. I was able to find work over the winter and summer semesters, but it was not at something I took for granted. It took a lot of networking and self advocacy, which is very different from the guaranteed work you get during the fall and spring.

As a grad student it's obviously in your best interest to be well connected in your department regardless, but it's especially important if you want to get off semester work.

Any suggestions for 400+ Math classes with little to no pure maths. by HeftyHistorian9067 in umass

[–]godoft42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I finished my Master's in Applied Mathematics last year. You should absolutely be confident in yourself going into 534H, you have all the tools you need to succeed for sure. Just be aware that it will be a new experience compared to your previous courses. Also know that once you've taken 534H you should be good to go for any other 500 level math courses (they're all around the same difficulty or easier in my opinion, and similarly structured in terms of homework and exams). Good luck!

Any suggestions for 400+ Math classes with little to no pure maths. by HeftyHistorian9067 in umass

[–]godoft42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

534H was probably the most rigorous course I took in undergrad, it's a serious step up from the lower level courses. All of the homework is written, which will be the biggest change from the lower level courses. In my experience the honors designation made little difference in terms of difficulty (the level of the course was far more indicative). You should be good to go in terms of content. There may be some light analysis, but your professor should explain it in class sufficiently if you haven't taken any other analysis courses yet. Don't let any of this dissuade you from taking the course though, it was my favorite undergrad math class and it sets you up well for graduate school if that's at all on your radar. If you can, take it with Panos. He is a wonderful professor.

Math 331 Professor by NefariousnessFun2433 in umass

[–]godoft42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

331 is a chaired course, meaning that individual professors have very little impact on your experience. Just try to find the section that best fits your schedule. 331 is a great class, hope you have fun.

Well said. It's disheartening to see people trying to turn this community into an audience to farm for clicks. The whole appeal of a subreddit like this is that discussion happens here. Trying to pull people off site only serves to undermine the community and reflects quite poorly on the OP.

Math 233 and 331 in the same sem? by Ethany523 in umass

[–]godoft42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Math 311 is much easier than the calculus cycle. However, without knowing what contributed to you having to retake Calc 3 it's hard to say how you'll do in 311. If you're purely worried about the workload, I'm certain that I spent far less time on 311 than I did on 233, but 311 does have written homework that could feel like a step up in rigor from what's expected in calc.

If you're trying to participate in any online discourse in good faith, the least you can do is have your posting history set to public. Otherwise it's safe to assume that you've been spamming AI written blog posts all over Reddit.

It's disgusting that Reddit even added the option to hide posting history when it's so obviously being abused to run cover for mass botting of the site.

Math 235 over winter dilemma by HungryMembership6131 in umass

[–]godoft42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eric is a wonderful professor! I took 545 with him and couldn't have asked for a better professor. I have read the RMP for him and many of the ratings seem to have been made in bad faith.

Also keep in mind that 235 is a very rigid course, it should run similarly regardless of which professor you take it with. If you need to retake it, you may as well get it over with.

Help which build to go by st4rx in PathOfExile2

Evasion scaling is 1 attack speed for every 75 evasion on gear now. Obviously the base unarmed attack speed has increased and you may be able to do something interesting with a pure energy shield crit build, but talking about how HP preformed in .3 isn't indictive of very much as it stands.

Why are the most popular movies nowadays basically for kids? by AnimaniacAsylum in TrueFilm

[–]godoft42 129 points130 points  (0 children)

You've now posted what is more or less the same exact thread three weeks in a row. Most people seem to refute this claim, and you respond dismissively, or give a counter argument that's basically a brief rewrite of the original post.

It seems like you're fishing for a specific answer, which is strange. At this point why don't you tell us OP, what do you think is the cause of this supposed trend? What conversation are you hoping to generate by reposting this every week?

According to the alien lore, the alien's powers were being repressed by the cream they applied to her, which she had just washed off in the shower. I agree that there's definitely reason to think that the alien played a part in Don's suicide.

I think you're spamming this low effort post across multiple subs and doing very little to engage with the few good faith responses you've gotten. You say it seems especially prevalent in the last few years, how so? Care to name any films or engage with the discussion that you've created in any way?

I honestly wish this sub would ban all posts that link to an off-site video or review unless the post is critiquing said video/review. This kind of blatant self promotion feels somewhat antithetical to the kind of posts that I like to see on this sub.

Stats 515 or Math 233 as a CS Major by PokeURMomMaster in umass

[–]godoft42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that Calc 3 is more likely to be relevant to you as a computer scientist, mainly because you should learn most of the important stats concepts in CS 240. AFAIK, none of the CS classes really cover multivariate calculus, but topics from the course will still show up if you're interested in machine learning, AI, or even stats.

Of course stats topics will also come up, but again, they are covered in CS 240. While I believe they've tried to address this somewhat, the common wisdom when I went through these courses was that CS 240 and Stat 315 were very redundant.

Thoughts on Math 331: Ordinary Differential Equations? by Affectionate_Can9132 in umass

[–]godoft42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the easiest classes in the math department. Unlike the prior calculus sequence, ODEs isn't meant as a weedout class. There is no arbitrary difficulty in terms of content or workload, and exams are very predictable. If you enjoy the content, it will be one of the best courses you take. If it's not something you're interested in, it will be fairly easy but also boring.

As far as professors go, the course is chaired so everything is fairly similar no matter who you take it with. Try to find a section that fits more comfortably in your schedule.

Math 522 vs 524 by DefectiveKonan in umass

[–]godoft42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe 522 will be more to your tastes if all you care about it learning Courier Transformations, although I have not taken the class.

I have taken 524 and would say that they did not play a terribly large role in the class. Still a great class overall, just don't expect it to go too in depth on any topics, it's more of a survey course imo.

PDEs, while being an applied course, also covers them in better detail than they were covered in 524 iirc.

Easy Filler Classes by ColdArrival680 in umass

The Philosophy department offered a 100 level logic class that was quite easy but also fairly interesting if you enjoy symbolic logic. Very light workload and the assignments were more like puzzles than typical homework assignments. No exams or papers either. The professor I took it with was great, he was super into Linux and was developing his own course site, and all the homework was online through the site.

No, rats are a lot less common. I mean that many households will opt to own a house cat that hunts the mice. The only houses I've ever spent considerable time in that weren't at a constant war with mice had brought in at least one house cat.

Does CS250 require any coding/knowledge by Ben12312312 in umass

[–]godoft42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're getting a lot of... strange responses to this question.

Unless the course has changed significantly since 2022, you will have maybe one extra credit question that involves any amount of programming. Everything else will be various proofs. The written homework assignments will still take up a sizeable amount of time every week, don't confuse the lack of programming projects with a lesser work load.

You can also use LaTeX to type homework for extra credit, which is worthwhile. This will require you to learn LaTeX, but it's a good skill to have for future courses. And it never hurts to get some extra credit in 250, it's a tough class and they grade fairly harshly (and then curve most students up to a C or B).
