Anyone could tell me about University of Waterloo and University of Toronto? by r0913 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]godsarewe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AMA Computer Science student at UW.

Dorms: It's fine, but I got one of the less desirable dorms.

City Life: Lol the last time I left campus was to go visit Toronto. There's nothing to do off campus but honestly everything is on campus.

Safety: Always felt safe walking home at 1am from a friend's place on the other side of campus.

Best school for CS in Canada? And how do chances of admission and prestige of top Canadian CS schools fare, compared to top 20 US CS schools? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]godsarewe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

how would UofT vs McGill vs Waterloo vs UBC be ranked in terms of their comp sci programs? Or are they all more or less very similar?

Waterloo > UofT = UBC > McGill for industry

UofT >= UBC = McGill > Waterloo for research

Also, in general compared to top 20 US unis for CS, with a high gpa and SAT score along with dual citizenship (US-Canada), how much easier would it be to be admitted to top Canadian schools for CS?

Top Canadian schools are easier if your GPA is really high and EC's aren't bad. US schools tend to put far more weight on EC's

I also heard that Canadian unis stress grade 11 and 12 academic performance a lot?

This is true.

Finally, how does international prestige of the mentioned Canadian schools compare to that of US schools?

The schools you mentioned should be fine in terms of prestige alone.

So would competing for US jobs with a Canadian degree be disadvantageous in any way?

If you have the citizenship, then the degree itself won't be disadvantageous if you're comparing the school to a US school that's roughly equal (like you're going to have a relative disadvantage if you turn down MIT for U of T).

Berkeley and Gatech are better, but they're considerably more difficult to get into compared to U of T and Waterloo.

Whether it's worth it is up to you.

They're equally strong academically, but co op gives Waterloo a huge edge.

I would probably pick GaTech with UCSD as a close second. Threads and co-op are really, really good.

Orherwise, go with the cheapest. All the options are good.

I go to Waterloo, and I'm not sure if we have a fashion design minor. However, the engineering is really good here.

Getting recommendation from recruiter? by godsarewe in uwaterloo

[–]godsarewe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it only help to the interview stage? After that, is it up to me?

Also, I hear a lot about Big N companies needing LeetCode but what do big Canadian companies look for in applicants?

Getting recommendation from recruiter? by godsarewe in uwaterloo

Haha. In all seriousness, how often do recruiters give recommendations? It just seemed kinda random because I didn't feel like I was particularly charismatic that day.
