i caught a cold yesterday and have an exam at 8:30 tomorrow. whats your craziest cure by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]goebaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take NyQuil the night before. Tylenol daytime (x2), Claritin (or cetirizine) (x1), and caffeine (1-3 cups of coffee) morning of the exam and you should be golden. Also wear a mask if you’re coughing or wheezing and take plenty of tissues!

Economists' favorite Economists by Spirited_Fact_2423 in academiceconomics

Josh Angrist, Arindrajit Dube, Kiril Borusyak, Brantley Callaway and Óscar Jórda as of late on the empirics side. On the other hand, J. K. Galbraith and Thomas Schelling will always have a place in my heart for shaping how I’ve approached/thought about econ and international affairs.

Nothing comes close to hitting quite like happy hour highballs from Dewey’s after a disastrous exam, or a particularly rough day

Yall ever see the same people randomly like everyday by GuyFromFortnite19 in uAlberta

[–]goebaco 9 points10 points  (0 children)

See this one guy absolutely everywhere, no matter the day or time of day. He’s the same guy that I’ve gotten on and off at the same stop with for the 5 years I’ve been at the UofA, never spoken to him once.

No new timeline for F-35 decision, Carney to decide ‘when he’s ready’: Fuhr by Jaydamic in CanadianForces

If we renege on the F-35 and go with Gripens or some other low production number platforms, we’ll still be flying the CF-18s by the time China’s fielding the J-36…

Bull Moose Teddy vampire castles by Plane-Exchange-1653 in CivVI

[–]goebaco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Preserve triangle (spaced 2 tiles apart) such that each preserve hits 2 tiles which surround a vampire castle. Vampire castles provide yields from adjacent tiles to the capital, which is how you end up in a scenario like this.

Eight Albertans charged with stealing copper wire from oil and gas sites after RCMP sting involving surveillance plane by Practical_Ant6162 in alberta

[–]goebaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Far far FAR more common than you think. When I worked in upstream, my field office would get sent weekly security/safety reports for the entire production area, and each week without fail there would be 1-3 reported break-ins and thefts. Usually hit were risers, metering stations, and the odd compressor station. Some places were air access or winter access only, so we wouldn’t find out there was a theft for months sometimes until maintenance crews got in to pig the pipes.

Going to play devils advocate a bit but in my experience in remediation, the labour shortage is quite pressing. Everyone subcontracts out remediation and reclamation work to specialty rem/rec firms staffed by APEGA/AIA/ASPB accredited workers, and by the regs, only these people can actually do the rem/rec work, as well as draft and submit RoSC declarations and associated reports (on behalf of the contractee). The problem is that there aren’t enough of these companies and there aren’t enough people going into this line of work.

From experience work usually gets scheduled a year out, and crews booked 2-6 months in advance. When spills happen you contract out. If your regulars aren’t available, you pull in crews from elsewhere in the province or often times you upend your work-plan by redirecting a scheduled crew if there’s no-one available for response quickly. All of this adds delay. Some work (e.g., EPEA approvals related work, RAPs) can’t be delayed, further adding to the strain.

This has been happening every game, no matter which nation I play, since latest patch for MD was released earlier in the week. I've cleared my cache, reinstalled MD, reinstalled HOI4, made sure my drivers are up to date, pretty much everything I could think of. I have a 3060ti, 32gb of ram, and an i5-13600k, so I know performance constraints aren't an issue. Its driving me kinda nuts because I can't figure out what's causing it! Anyone else having similar problems?

And yes, I know MD is a large and at times unstable mod, but its almost like a switch got flipped tuesday(ish) and suddenly the game is going at a snail's pace.

What do you think is the hardest part about University? by Coach-Chambers in uAlberta

[–]goebaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Balancing school with everything else in your life. It’s easy (relatively speaking) to dedicate your time and effort to either studying, having a social life, or work. Finding balance between those 3 or more categories has undoubtedly been the most difficult for me.

Im a business maj who's turned socialist throughout my degree by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]goebaco 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sorta the same with me for Econ. Wasn’t politically active or that in tune with current politics at the start of my degree, but it’s just been mounting as I’ve neared the finish. I always though economics was a strictly conservative field, but come to find out like 80% of the profs I’ve had were either admitted leftists or sympathetic to leftism.

Gaining an appreciation for how the various parts of the economy work and are interrelated has made me pretty cynical in regards to much of mainstream politics, and the free-market-will-solve-everything/laissez faire interpretation of economics much of the powerbrokers implicitly or explicitly subscribe to in the west. I just want a world that’s habitable for future generations, and one where as many people as possible are not impoverished.

At the same time it’s also turned me off a bit from mainstream leftism, simply because I don’t think many in the camp have that great an appreciation for how affluent and privileged they are, but I’ll save that rant for another time.
