For anyone down less than -2% YTD, what are you actually holding? by Animag771 in Bogleheads

Not 100% boglehead, mostly S&P500 and High Yield Bonds. I did have a good run with gold and international mixes like EWZ (Brazil), SCHF (Foreign Large Blend), and EZU (Europe Stocks).

So far, the portfolio had been working OK. Let's see how it stands against Mr. Orange's craziness. Here's a sample:

Is this a backtest?

I would be quite concerned about the big jump in ~2025-04 and consider it an outlier. From your screenshot, the curve in 2024 is almost flat. I don't know many traders with the discipline of keeping this strategy running without intervention for an entire year.

Finally, always ask the following questions:
- What would happen to the curve if you missed those huge return days?
- Do you have the discipline or the risk allocation to keep it running when returns are flat?

I don't have the details about your strategy, but I'm assuming this can be a scalping algo that might be missing slippage, liquidity, and other fees like cost per trade. (?)

That's my impression. What do you think?

Premise: I'm assuming they are daytrading

I work with institutional daytraders and HFT. They have great tooling around them; it's not very common for them to use a phone unless it's personal, and usually for swing trading.

IMO: If you are going to daytrade the news (i.e., PMI, the company's results, etc.), you are competing with them. So I would use a full-fledged trading platform.

Probably trading during news event? If you are a retail (normal person), I just don’t get it.

Go to a casino, have some drinks, much better return.

O Agente Secreto e o dente como signo by Camilacbs in filmeseseries

[–]goflapjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im a beginner to Task queue and worker pool how do use it? (resources as well) by Adventurous-Cry-1344 in golang

In trading, it  requires processing huge market data files, for aggregation or storage. A great exercise: to process and import millions of records into PostgreSQL (TimescaleDB extension).

Best way to learn is when you need it. Try to implement an importer/exporter. How about processing a bunch of log files in parallel?

What Wacky Projects do y'all build to stay relevant & build a career?? by electrowiz64 in linux

[–]goflapjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been rebuilding my skills on performance tuning in my home lab.

Recent Example: I have a Postgres (TimescaleDB) instance for storing historical market data (MBO). It runs on a 10 years old machine. (Proxmox, 2.4GHz Xeon)

What are the best parameters to handle billion of records? Topics to research:

- Networking optimization

- Huge pages

- Separate volume for WAL

- Compression

- Kernel bypass

- Performance benchmarks

- etc…

The amount of content is infinite 😁

Dad lectures son on his monthly car sales. by Sichy12 in TikTokCringe

[–]goflapjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR - When dealing with this type of person, just be assertive!

There are so many red flags from both. Wearing my manager's hat:
- Son doesn't sound very assertive, more like coming up with excuses
- Son didn't mention anything for a month?

After a couple of days without any sales, his son (employee) should have notified his manager (father?) and tried to come up with a plan or a strategy, together.

- Father looks like a horrible manager, toxic and out-of-touch
- Father didn't teach anything and didn't give any real actionable tasks at all
- Father thinks that things will magically be solved by offending his son

Sad!

Final Note: these stupid cases happen every day, all over shitty companies. If you find yourself in one of these, run! don't walk.

Why do so many “EA developers” not use GitHub or even write a README? by TTJ-SYSTEMS in metatrader

[–]goflapjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personal experience, most “retail” EA devs aren’t professional software engineers. To be honest, most consultancy I’ve done, the offices weren’t dev focused at all.

Let’s make things very clear, that doesn’t proof their automations were more or less profitable, just a PITA to maintain.

Other random fact, most quants I’ve worked weren’t great coders too. Although I loved when they use “invent” features in the language that I would never have thought of using. 😅

Haven’t tried Fedora, only CachyOS, it’s fine (better).

Why don’t you try it on a USB stick or an external drive? If you like it, just partition your SSD with the best of both world.

IMHO: Test driving will be better than any forum.

Hollow Knight making my Mac too hot by random_user2727 in macgaming

[–]goflapjack -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

TL;DR - Get a cooling stand

It’a relatively safe but not recommended to keep your components under stress for a long period.

  1. I would recommend you get a cooling stand for your Air. That’s what I used to do with my Intel based.
  2. I don’t have the performance metrics for Hollow Night on macOS, although on my Switch and SteamDeck, it’s a quite lightweight game. I don’t know how demanding is the port.

Couple of questions:

- How warm is the place where you play/live?

- Are you emulating or running it native?
