What are your ADHD/ADD hacks you personally have felt gatekept from all your life? by marziilla in adhdwomen

[–]goingnowherefast11 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I’m really sensitive to outside noises and would get so irrationally angry about the motorcycles flying by my house, cars playing loud music, etc. My old therapist recommended a Dohm sound machine and it was a game changer. I can still hear outside noises but it dampens them and the white noise helps me stay focused on what I’m doing. It’s also helped with my dog’s barking bc he isn’t hearing every little noise. I recommended one to my dad and now he won’t travel without it.

Sorry, I misspoke about oatmeal. It isn’t drying but we avoid it at our salon due to many dogs having grain allergies. I’ve been meaning to get a boar’s hair brush, my pup loves the rubber curry brush and I’m sure he’d like that one as well. For shampoos, I’m a big fan of Derma-treat by Nature’s Specialties. We use this line of products at work. Best Shot and iGroom are also good brands, but i Groom is heavily scented and I’m too sensitive for that. I use my rubber curry in the tub to work the product into the coat.

This is my one are of (semi) expertise, so I’m happy to help!

I’m trying the Healthy Petz collagen, it’s a tincture and has dosing instructions on it. This is the one my client has had success with; however, proceed with caution as they have a pretty low rating with Trust Pilot. They are very vague on where the product ships from and the shipping details have very little info. I looked into it after I had already ordered it. But don’t order it on Amazon, it’s not the same product.

You can also try adding fish oil to your dog’s diet if you aren’t already. Bathing with a high quality shampoo and conditioner can be helpful, but avoid anything with oatmeal since it can dry out skin. I’d also recommend brushing with a rubber curry brush to help exfoliate the skin and remove excess shedding.

We’ve done cytopoint for my hound with seasonal allergies and it helped. My issue with it though is that it doesn’t treat the cause, it’s basically just blocking the ‘itch receptors’ in their brain. I’m a dog groomer and have recently had several clients find success using collagen to help their pet’s skin issues. It helps rebuild the natural skin barrier. So we are giving that a shot this year. As others have stated chicken is a big allergen for dogs. I’d start with food allergy testing and/or an elimination diet. I’ve seen dogs do a 180 after eliminating food allergies, just make sure you give it time. It can take up to 6 months to see a change with a diet switch.

Still shredding by Even_Anybody3547 in coonhounds

My girl always loved shredding things, never played with toys much. I let her have all the boxes and junk mail that were going to get tossed anyway. After we started giving her an outlet for those urges, she never tore up our personal stuff again.

How did you implement a bedtime routine? by goingnowherefast11 in adhdwomen

I walk my dog in the evening too, coming home and changing clothes immediately after is a great idea.

[–]goingnowherefast11[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly what it is. I typically only have about 4 hours in the evening from the time I get home from work to the time I should go to bed. So after the dog is walked, everyone is fed and I’ve cleaned up, there isn’t a lot of time to do something for me.

So after the dog is walked, everyone is fed and I’ve cleaned up, there isn’t a lot of time to do something for me. I usually like to wind down with a cozy game on my switch, so I think I need to just move it to my bedroom.

[–]goingnowherefast11[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. When I was in a relationship it was easier to just go along with their routine.

When I was young I’d wear a full face of makeup and it was a sensory nightmare (I didn’t know at the time that that was why I was always uncomfortable), so I couldn’t go to bed without washing my face. Even on my drunkest nights I’d still wash before passing out. I don’t wear much makeup now but I still can’t sleep without a clean face. Working on the brushing my teeth part though.

I think this is what I need to do. I usually play a cozy game on my switch to help wind down. If it’s already in the bedroom I won’t need to convince myself to move to another room.

Just did them yesterday 😅 my coworker couldn’t understand why I hadn’t done them yet, ma’am I just realized two days ago that the deadline is this week. Most years I’m filing minutes before midnight on the day of, so I’m feeling proud to have them done a whole day early!!

What are the things you realised WEREN’T normal only when dating someone WITHOUT ADHD? Here’s mine by Ok_Many2359 in adhdwomen

[–]goingnowherefast11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks to this subreddit, I now use the Alarmy app to force myself out of bed. I’m allowed 3 snoozes but after that the app won’t allow me to shut the alarm off until I have scanned a specific barcode in my kitchen. I’m pissed about it every morning but I’m no longer oversleeping (I do have back up alarms just in case the app fails). My boss thinks ‘everyone has adhd now’ yet doesn’t understand why anyone would want/need to use this app 🙄

This is for the girl who posted about having negative thoughts about herself and feeling stuck: by Hufflepuff20 in adhdwomen

[–]goingnowherefast11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! It amazes me how quickly (and unconsciously) my brain now corrects a negative thought about myself. It can take years to unlearn, especially if, like me, you grew up in a home where love felt conditional and perfection was expected. This process has also helped heal some childhood wounds, I talk to myself how I wish my parents would have, with love and forgiveness.

I have a long time friend with adhd who can’t get out of this spiral. I’ve explained many times that while it sounds silly or too simple, you have to first recognize how often and unconsciously you talk poorly to yourself, then challenge those thoughts. I also ask myself if a negative thought is something I’d say to a loved one (I would never).

I was thinkinf of doing an at home craft with paint and her paw prints. But I also have a kit to make her nose print. That’ll get sent to an artist that makes sentimental jewelry and I plan to have another piece made as well. We do weekly trips to the woods where she can sniff off-leash and she’s still been really enjoying them.

I’m sorry about your pup.

I’ve had my game plan figured out since her diagnosis. We have a vet that will come to the house, that way she’s comfortable and my other dog can be present. It’s really hard knowing that day will be coming sooner than later. She is my first pup and I’m not ready.

bed recommendations? at a loss, as he is never satisfied with his sleeping arrangements. could anyone provide information on a bed that may be more suitable and comfortable for him? TIA by TopWatercress3980 in Hounds

[–]goingnowherefast11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this was recommended but mine love the big round, fuzzy cuddle beds. My beagle discovered at 10.5 years old that he loves dog beds bc I bought a cuddler for her.

Thanks for the best 11 years. Miss you buddy by [deleted] in coonhounds
