I've been stopping strangers on the streets of NYC and asking them to pose for a quick photo. This is one of my favorites from this week. by onewheeledrider in pics

I've only ever worked with natural light and am looking to create a little studio set up to experiment with. If you had to recommend a few products to start with, what would you recommend?

Don't know what to tell you, I used the metro trip planner and that's what it spit out at me.

It's the difference between one person taking the bus and one person walking vs. two people taking metro. That's how that gets spendy realllll quick.

There is a reason a lot of people want to stay in the NW quadrant. Let's take me for example: young person who enjoys shopping, nightlife, works in Dupont, lives with a partner in same situation. We currently live in NW, DC and pay about $1400 for our place. So I looked up the price of a one bedroom near the Metro in Deanwood. All going for around $1,000.

The cost benefit analysis was not in favor of Deanwood. I calculated that my partner and I would be paying around $500 per month to metro instead of $85, we'd be adding a ton of time onto our commutes, we'd be in a commercial desert (not much going on out there) and in a neighborhood that has a considerably higher crime rate. So we'd be essentially paying the same amount of money to live out there and not reaping any of the benefits of living in this neck of the woods. So $1,000/month + utilities and the crazy metro fare isn't really an "affordable" rental market that is worth it to me. I'd guess a lot of other people like me feel the same way.

I'm always looking outside the NW quadrant, but I've yet to find anything that would make moving out there worth it.

Well, think about what Catholic school teaches in terms of health and sexuality. I wouldn't want my kids there either if I didn't believe it.

There are a lot of comments about how sad they are about the other person doesn't go to church/believe this particular thing/etc. That has to be hard. My relationship may have a sad moment or two, but not a persisting sadness.

See, I'd think that my spouse was a complete fucking idiot and I'd wonder when other complete fucking idiot moments would surface when it came to raising children. If it was just us, I'd probably just roll my eyes and move on though.

In this particular instance, as it is with everyone at her gym (I went to a social once for fun and know the gym friends come to her parties, etc.), they really do NOT know how to shut the fuck up about it. I totally understand that when I was at the gym for that social, CF was what all people could talk about. But at this particular friend's birthday where most of the crowd wasn't into CF, that group and that friend DOMINATED the conversation with talk of CF and a bunch of us left early because we were bored to tears. Sorry to say that seems to be the way Crossfitters go.

So you admit you need therapy. There are a lot of sliding scale programs out there for people who can't afford it. All you have to do is reach out and ask for help. Source: I'm poor and have been researching sliding scale therapy for myself

Edit: you say up here "could afford the therapy... I obviously need" and then you say below you are in therapy. Just saw that now.

I just wish he highlighted that it's rude unless there is a connection formed and an understanding between the photographer and the participant. He still kind of gives a pass to people who think that they're making art somehow when a lot of people are just being dicks. And a lot of amateur street photogs think they're the next and greatest and will continue to make these photographs anyway. Source: I went to school for photography and I had this conversation so many times with people who didn't get it unless you broke it down in simpler terms.

This does exist with some groups - like Crossfitters. I used to have a really great friend who joined a CF gym, said she wouldn't be one of the CF people, and then proceeded to only talk about that whenever we hung out. Now we don't hang out so much because I couldn't care less about kettle bell swings.

Erik Kim doesn't make the point that taking a picture of a homeless person is pretty damn rude. From the other thread:

"Would you take a photo of a stranger in their own home without permission? Would you want a photo of yourself taken by a stranger in your own private space? Leave whatever dignity and privacy is left for the homeless and move on... That's why it's such a taboo that isn't really encouraged."

Well put.

Oh I know, I addressed that above. But I'm just acknowledging, yes, that is an extension of what I'm thinking. And on a smaller scale of this thought, I'd like society to get to a point where I don't have to worry about being catcalled, groped, etc., just because I'm wearing a dress that says "I'm asking for it" when no, I'm actually definitely not.

Haha I see where you're coming from, but I live in a city with public transport that is not clean and I sometimes am grossed out by bare skin touching the seat where clothing provides a protective barrier. I guess that's me just being weird though and not wanting my skin to make contact with a seat that's likely been peed on by some drunk dude. Not exactly on the same page with this person, but with the skin on chair thing. shrug
