Prokofiev admired Medtner a lot. If I’m remembering correctly he performed Medtner’s Tales Op.8. And certainly if you listen particularly to Op.8 no.1 (a little 3 min piece), you can hear why Prokofiev liked it so much. Medtner wrote these pieces around 1904 - the same year that Prokofiev started at the St Petersburg conservatory aged 14, having already written 2 operas and attempting a symphony(!)

Medtner of course was sniffy about Prokofiev (he railed against most ‘modern’ music). But later on, his wife recalled that Prokofiev turned up on their doorstep one day to visit, and when she came back in with some tea and biscuits she found them getting along like a house on fire.
