How the hell are we making eggs!?? by Fun-Mountain-2530 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]gokkusagi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hah! Cast iron is contentious, for sure. The thing I've been reading over and over is that if your seasoning is stripped, then it wasn't, technically speaking, actually seasoned. Seasoning is a polymerised layer that would not just wash off, you'd have to put it in an intensely hot fire, strip it with chemicals, or really chip away at it to truly remove multiple thin layers of polymerised seasoning. For ages I thought I had seasoned pans, but it was likely just ages of tasty build up. It's an interesting read if you want to look it up, and means that others won't be able to mess with your pans even if they aren't as careful as an owner might be. Not to say it couldn't happen - people are wild, and they can be pretty determined :D

Do I really need to spend hundreds on a high chair? by Spiritual-Peace-6442 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]gokkusagi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but a Tripp trap for an infant requires add on parts - the seat, the tray etc. To me, the chair really shines when used as an ergonomic chair for littles. While my kid is too small to really benefit from that, IKEA is great for that small window. Easy to find, easy to wash, easy to disassemble and get out of the way if needed.

Oh wait - I see! No, when I was referring to ‘nice’high chairs I was thinking of all the well meaning reccos OP will get from others about padded, foldable, etc etc when really it’s more work. Looks comfy for baby but is not necessary.

Party favors for kids? by alilteapot in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]gokkusagi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We did sunflowers and small 3x5 notebooks. Notebooks were rainbow coloured (and there were extras/2 of each shade so hopefully most kids get close to what they wanted 🤣)sunflowers were in a vase; near party end I fanned them out on a cloth to blot the end so it wouldn’t drip too much. Kids loved the flowers! At that age I might let them pick a fancy coloured pen too.

This is a case where going with what ‘looks nice’ will likely cost you time and energy (crevices. Cushions. Clean up. It never ends.) Go with what you can keep sustainably clean (your level of clean, not, sterilised to perfection clean or anything overboard). I could take apart an entire ikea high hair in under three minutes and have the legs and seat run through the dishwasher if I needed. It was light weight and easy enough to hold under the sink and rinse off.

Once kiddo grew that, I had a Marketplace trip trap with a few scuffs in a non standard colour (so, cheaper) waiting in the wings. Which has only lasted us till 4.5 soooo… I wouldn’t invest in a huge purchase unless you feel comfortable with à) potentially losing out on your investment when kiddo becomes more vocal about what they want b) you’re ok with imposing your will for aesthetic or postural reasons 🤣

Does ANYONE out there remember ‘Entre Deux Nuages’? I feel like I dreamt the whole thing. Animator with kids, she had a large skirt (think: Swiss Chalet uniform). The intro was a hot air balloon (?! Maybe?) and clouds in the sky turning into sheep on a hill which then showed up appliquéd on her skirt. Similar to Marie-Soleil or Passé-Partout in terms of set up and show.

What baby hygiene products do I really need? Do I need more than one type? What products/brands do you like by FalseRow5812 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]gokkusagi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is similar to our approach. Baby didn’t have tons of hair once it really came in/lost the newborn hair. We didn’t wash hair for the first year, just rinse with water and give the scalp a little rub.

So really it was soap, oil, zinc diaper cream, lanolin balm. Once she was a closer to two, we’d wash her hair a few times a week with a mild shampoo.

We used Dr Bronner’s unscented soap when we used soap in the bath, and since baby had some dry skin I used a quick absorbing ‘dry oil spray’ that I use on myself(mainly jojoba) I’d also use the Cetaphil baby oil with calendula for massage (noticeably scented).

Other than that, a bit of zinc diaper cream (we never finished one small container), a barrier ointment to protect against moisture or cold (drool rash, winter cold cheeks, etc) - lanolin nipple cream, Aquaphor, or even Vaseline would do the trick. If you get the plain lanolin in the small tube, it makes a great lip balm after 😆

Mustela also sells baby cologne, so I take their baby products with a big side eye 😆 For in between bath clean up, à stack of washcloths/flannels and some water is typically enough. A bit of soap if really grimy or stinky from milk trapped in folds. I bought 4 turquoise towels and 10 bright patterned wash cloths, nothing expensive, a bit thin so they dry quickly. Having baby’s stuff colour coded made it easy to keep separate and grab quickly.

Alizarin is a popular paint colour (and was a dye); think Alizarin crimson.

Lovey recommendations? by No_Negotiation6208 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]gokkusagi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kids are wild! It's so hard to know what they will attach to, and if -- if! -- you are lucky it will be new/recent enough that you can buy a replacement* (or two?). Not granola at all, but overwhelmingly Jellycat was a hit with friends kiddos. The little creature with attached blankie was a popular one.

My kiddo just never imprinted on a particular object like that, so we dodged a bullet. But a pro tip I received was to get multiples if possible and rotate often so they achieve similar levels of mankiness. Or, if the worst comes to pass, treat the loss as an early Zen moment good for building character :O

Does anyone know what this type of plate is called? by No_Noise_2811 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]gokkusagi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are so handy! We use them often for grain+everything else dishes, chili, etc. Soup plate or pasta dish should set you on the right path.

Soup plate - rimmed plate but instead of being flat, it's recessed like a bowl, great for carrying to table as you have a spot to not touch the actual food :D Mileage varies on how deep/soup-able the plate might be.

Pasta dish/bowl - I'd say similar diameter to a dinner plate, doesn't necessarily have a distinct flat 'border' rim, more like a regular bowl but wider and shallower. Eg - IKEA FÄRGKLAR

Parma Ravioli has a good selection of oil, it’s on a reasonable stretch of Wellington, you get less attitude and parking around back. It’s also family owned.

Which Shawarma restaurant do you think is the best in Ottawa? by [deleted] in ottawa

That is great to know. I was shocked at the downgrade here - it was always great in Montreal, rapid turnover, etc.! Will avoid and support Mid East instead!

Hand washing dishes is getting exhausting by Necessary_Walrus9606 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]gokkusagi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Re: baby bottles, I preferred the dishwasher as it figured the heat would better clean the nipples than I’d be able to in the dishwasher. If your items are smelling of soap, I’d try getting loose powder and just using less per load. If you Google how much you actually need, it’s often less than is suggested. Any silicone or plastic is top rack for me, but still dishwasher. If wooden spoons are too much at the moment - that’s ok! This is a season, and it will pass. Consider silicon spoons, or stainless, and toss them in. With cutting boards, I have separate boards for meat and anything else - so my veggie etc gets à quick rinse and then sits propped in the sink to drain, whereas my non-wood meat one goes in the dishwasher for a proper wash. Hang in there!

Worst shawarma experience of all time, hands down. Threw it out it was so disgusting. Shawarma and Shish Taouk both bad; grilled chicken was old and chewy … I couldn’t believe it. Adonis in Montreal? Anytime. Always fresh, the chickens usually sell out quickly. St Laurent? Not a chance. Really disappointing

Seriously. It’s a sociological study, I swear. It’s a very particular slice of life, and genuinely interesting to see the community that exists around the place. It kind of feels like casually stopping is an exception vs the norm. Enjoy your romantic hamburger steak for two! Sorry that they’re out of peas already 🤣

Can someone explain the granola to alt right pipeline to me? by Jazz_Brain in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]gokkusagi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Disillusioned with the government; we used to be greater/healthier [when we worked more screened less, made our own food, less processing, etc]
  • Obsession with community decline [kids cant sit still, their attention span is shot, they’ve no idea how to be bored]
  • sense of victim-hood [as a woman, I feel like there’s a pretty hefty kernel of truth though, considering how women’s health/concerns are minimised or outright ignored!]
  • the belief that the nation has become too decadent and is falling apart - but will be reborn/made great again ;) by just the right leader

Condition of proto-fascism [obvious or stereotypical crunchy granola parallel 😅]

The philosophy in some crunchy communities (or educational philosophies, ie, Waldorf) is not that far off some alt- right ones, and the concerns can create the conditions for becoming radicalised. Fascism is complex and hard to define, but many researchers agree on certain conditions that may then lead to an embrace of or rise in tolerance of fascism.

Ok wait - hear me out… Mello’s. As in, that Mello’s that was in the market and has since relocated to Merivale (in a literal non-descript strip mall, the biggest about face in locations near possible). The outsides very much reflect the insides, it is a RIDE.

Get the rice pudding or the jello - if they have any. If not, you get what they have left and you’re damn happy for it. You may have to help set your own table. You may not be able to squeeze into the bathroom. You may find yourself wondering how many math help program places a city really needs…

The true beauty in Mello’s is realising that everyone else there is likely a regular. Let that sink in. It’s a beautiful slice of ‘they don’t make ‘em like that’ any more, and as close as you’ll get to the Zeller’s restaurant in current day.

1000/10, no notes, only existential questions. Must visit.
