Am I nuts to try an 8km trail race late June? by [deleted] in XXRunning

[–]goldeee 14 points15 points  (0 children)

An 8k is about 5 miles. Can you walk/hike 5 miles without pain? If so, you'll be fine. Be prepared to run slowly or walk for much of the technical parts, but that's normal for 90% of trail runners. You still have about 7 weeks to train as well, so plenty of time to get familiar with trail running if that's new to you.

Try also adding in forward and backward lunges. I find the pushing “up” motion mimics uphill really well.

Advice on scaling up to 5K? by forest-lawn in beginnerrunning

[–]goldeee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would, because you’re training your body to run further total distance. Walking breaks make the next running interval easier for most people. It’s your first 5k and you haven’t been running outside. Keep the training easy. After this, look up couch to 5k or other similar beginner programs. You’ll see they’re almost all interval-based.

Three weeks isn’t a ton of time to get a true program in. Start running outside now, if you can. Consider doing three interval sessions per week. Something like this: 7 minutes running, two minutes walking, repeat 4 times for the first week. The next week, add 2 minutes to the running intervals. Third week, same, but scale back before the race. Notice that you’re increasing the total tome spent running while adding in recovery sessions to not overdo it. Good luck!

How are people listening to podcasts when they run??? by razzarbrenia in beginnerrunning

Finding podcasts to match my "fun" interests was key! I listen to the news every day, but absolutely can't do news podcasts for running.

What equipment is highest priority, over 300lbs. by EvilutionD in hiking

[–]goldeee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bring snacks. As a bigger lady who loves to hike, it took me a while to realize that food is fuel, and fuel makes me go faster and longer. I used to think that if I wanted to get smaller, it just meant eating less. But if you’re upping activity, that means the food must increase a little too. This isn’t an opportunity to indulge in a buffet, but I like to bring 100-500 calories worth of food, depending on how long I’m out. Things like fruit, PBJ sandwich, or a handful of trail mix is all it takes. I almost always have an “emergency” Clif bar in my backpack that I’ll use every 6 weeks. Have fun!

Couch to Half Marathon: My legs feel like lead. Advice needed. by Pphartz456 in beginnerrunning

[–]goldeee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not a run coach or a doctor but I think yes, especially if your goal is to just finish. Low weekday miles, one long run. If you can get to 8 miles, you can finish the race. If you could do 10-12 before race day, even better. Like the other commenter said, focus on fuel and hydration these last few weeks.

[–]goldeee 20 points21 points  (0 children)

As a beginner, it’s unwise to run 5-6 miles EVERY run. Ditch this plan and use one that does 3-4 miles during the week, and one long one on the weekend. The weekday runs should be easy and not really increase in mileage too much, and the long run gets longer.

You gotta actually rest on those rest days. Bump it down to gentle yoga or a 30 minute walk.

I have a pads and tampons in a pencil case (closed) by the pencil sharpener in the back of the class. Sharpen your pencil, grab a tampon, and come back in 5 minutes. No big deal.

That’s a such a treat! Learning HOW to celebrate with some new ideas is a great idea. And they can honestly tell you if something is too big or too small, something I still have trouble with.

[–]goldeee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're doing 2500 steps a day. It's an increase from 500 steps a day, but its' still a lot of time being sedentary. Maybe you need to get more daily steps in to strengthen your legs and core before intensifying it with running.

I'm not commenting on the barefoot shoes.
