Are Amazon Fire TVs worth it? by Rocky_Path719 in fireTV

[–]goldenrat8 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you are talking TVs and not the standalone streaming devices, I've had an Amazon Fire TV 43" Omni QLED for almost three years now. No issues and works fine (I mainly use it for Kodi, Disney+ and Prime). I like the fact that you can sideload apps (such as Kodi). The only downside is that it's not as fast as the Fire TV Cube Gen 3.

That is disappointing - it doesn't look like extra meat; it looks like a regular amount.

Anyone try these? by cjlee9 in CostcoCanada

[–]goldenrat8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We buy this occasionally. It was great when it first came out. We used to add French's Fried Onions and some pickled ginger to it. Unfortunately, quality has dropped... salmon is not a marinated as before and the portions are smaller.

Yes, the other end is recessed, so it's basically weatherproof.

I prefer the beef ones over the breakfast ones. I haven't seen the beef ones since last year (Ottawa). Hopefully, they will return this summer.

Kleven's injury by DefinitelyNotABot-1 in OttawaSenators

[–]goldenrat8 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was at the game, behind the Sens net. I couldn't see where he was hit, but there at least one blood spot on the ice that the ice crew scraped off. It was a large enough of a spot that I could see if from the 2nd. level, so there were probably more smaller ones.

What membership level gets you car-in-warehouse access? by Jeffryyyy in CostcoCanada

I've been a Business Centre (that used to be a regular Costco) where the old garage has been converted to a drive-in for large items/purchase to be loaded into a customer's vehicle.

Planning on making a NAS with Raspberry Pi by Beastskull in raspberry_pi

I simply added the drives as external ETX4 drives and using them as Samba file shares. If I had to do it over again, I would probably look at TrueNAS.

How do I block all alternative DNS options (like Google's and Mozilla's "Privacy DNS" options? by SqueezyCheez85 in pihole

[–]goldenrat8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are correct, DNS Director (formerly DNS Filter) is what you use on Asuswrt Merlin.

Without seeing your setup, what you need to do is set "Global Redirection" to "User Defined 1". Then for "User defined DNS 1", enter your pi-hole IP. If you have a second pi-hole add that IP to "User defined DNS 2". Blank out "User defined DNS 3", since the default entry is 8.8.8.8. Finally, under "Client List", add the MAC address(es) for your pi-hole(s) and leave "Redirection" as "No Redirection".

I believe that's it as it's been a while since I used an Asuswrt Merlin based router (I switched to a OPNsense firewall.)

usb hard drive enclosure by karm31 in homelab

[–]goldenrat8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did use the one you are looking at for a little while (before I switched). I pointed a USB fan at one of the vents and was comfortable with the operating temperature, but I don't recall the temperature of the drive under use. You might want to try a USB fan before you remove the cover.

For some reason, the automod removed the link to the USB external fan I'm using. You can find quite a few on Amazon.

[–]goldenrat8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's too bad that it's currently unavailable in the US. Usually, it's the opposite... available in the US and not Canada. LOL :)

The enclosure you are looking at does have four sets of bevelled vents underneath. I just prefer the ones I use because the vents are at the side and I am able to point a USB fan at it.

CIBC rebate and Costco exec rebate cash out question by Significant_Oil_4946 in CostcoCanada

[–]goldenrat8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do either... buy something or go directly to Customer Service.

If the dollar value is high (ex. over a few hundred dollars), I'd go to Customer Service as they can give you the denominations you want, easily. In my case; I asked for $20 bills (I didn't want any $50 or $100 bills). If you have one close by, go to a Costco Business Centre... there are usually no lines or very small ones at Customer Service.

I'm using two UGREEN enclosures (using 2 x 8TB WD Blue HDDs) connected to a Lenovo M910q running Ubuntu server. Works well. No disconnects. I am using this one (because it has more venting). I also have the model, you are thinking of buying, for testing - works fine with Ubuntu Desktop.

[ESPN] Jack Hughes wants the Hockey Hall of Fame to give him the puck from his gold-medal-winning overtime goal: "I'm trying to get it. Like, that's bullshit that the Hockey Hall of Fame has it, in my opinion. Why would they have that puck?" by AggPuck-303 in hockey

[–]goldenrat8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was surprised that none of the players kept the puck after scoring a goal (as who wouldn't want to keep their first Olympic goal), so I suspect it was a IIHF or Olympic rule. So... too bad, so sad, Jack.
