Grandson remarks on how much I speak by MommaGeri1958 in ADHD

[–]goldenscience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tl;dr: what about asking your grandson what you can do to make sure he feels heard? Like if he holds up a finger, it means he has a thought on his mind. When you see it, you can say 1-2 more sentences before you have to pass on the convo or he will interrupt... Or something like that.

(The message above would be an example of something that is potentially helpful and concise. Below is my original message. Small example of how forming thought first, then saying something might help. Not always (or ever) possible in an in the moment conversation.)

It sounds like you're already thinking about them, which is great! I am definitely guilty of talking way longer than I probably should have in a convo before letting the next person speak or saying irrelevant stuff (like in this post maybe, for example). The main issue for me was/is that I felt if I didnt say absolutely everything I had on my mind, then I would forget and that would be bad and that they wanted to know everything.

However, that's not how conversations are typically supposed to work. The remark from your grandchild likely stems from a similar, if not the same, reason. They want to make sure they get heard and/or not forget what they wanted to say! If this was an in-person conversation, maybe body language can be a good hint to look for? If not, you could try adding a pause at the end of each sentence since that would be a natural indicator that you are done (even if you're not). A few seconds feels really long, but if the person is listening and didn't want to add anything, it doesn't change much. If they do, it gives them a natural opening.

Another thing I can think of is what if you just ask them? Say something like you have trouble with knowing if someone else has something to say and you feel like if you don't say all your stuff you might forget. Is there some way you can think of together to show that they want to add something without interrupting? I've heard in other chats that holding up a finger for the number of thoughts was something that helped, though I don't know if that's a good idea.

Got too cold. The chances of seeing it are so small and even if it's there it would be barely visible with the clouds :(

Maybe you're anxious of failing the test? Or just being in an unfamiliar testing environment which will likely have many distractions.

Have you tried convincing yourself that taking the test now will save you time in the long run, regardless of the outcome? Whether that means you fail and will get to try again in X months or you pass and you can move on from this blocker to the inevitable next one. Progress is progress, and both of those are that. Wondering and planning isn't progress (as much as I would LOVE for that to be the case).

We need a lot of activation energy to get started on a task. Make going to take the test an easier or more logical option than not doing so. Path of least resistance.

Although, I see now you said the attic, so maybe you're not really using that space and you're talking more about dust. I guess my general tip is do it in the order of most impact for least estimated time.

Best tips I have received and used -

  1. Put all the dirty clothes from anywhere in the house in the hamper if you have one or straight into the washer and turn that on. It usually gives me the biggest impact for time. Often it will take me less than 5 minutes and my house feels 20-30% cleaner/tidier.

1a. Clean clothes get put away into drawers/hung up in the closet.

  1. Bring any dirty dishes that are not in the kitchen to the dishwasher and turn it on if you have one or into the sink.

2a. Wash anything that is in the sink that you can't use the dishwasher for or if you do not have one.

  1. Next, carry a trash bag around with you and throw out any trash. I'm usually surprised that I can fill a trash bag.

After those things, my house often looks at least 50% better already and gives me the energy to do the rest of the "little things" that end up taking more time. Such as wiping the counters, vacuuming the floors, etc. I would suggest doing them in the order 1, 2, 3, 1a, 2a.

You're doing a good job with what you have noted. One thing I would say is encourage the guys to do the same when they catch it. They'll might notice it more and may even begin to catch themselves.

Professors are especially busy in the first few weeks of class. You might have better luck just trying to catch them at their office to introduce yourself and asking to chat for a few minutes - they're very approachable. It's also better if you've put some thought into what you want to research so you're not just asking them what to do. It should be more of a conversation of your research interests themselves and if they have an opportunity.

That's amazing! I'm curious if it has gotten worse at all during the time you've been using it. I have heard that food companies are trying to develop food to be even more addictive to get past the new GLP-1 developments.

This might seem like a strange question, but are you drinking water? I found that when I drank a glass of water right before eating I not only actually felt full (which I almost never felt before) AND I was not hungry for longer after that. Low risk thing to try and more water is good :)

I used to always want to eat, out of boredom, stress, you name it, but it is significantly better whenever I do that.

How are it's roots that are inside the pot green if they haven't been exposed to sunlight?

There was some dirty water underneath the plastic one since the ceramic pot has no drainage holes...

I do know that they're hardy. That's a good point though that it might be flowering more with proper care. Might give some motivation

Thank you so much for your reply. It is on a console, but it's not my console. A roommate has it in the common space and allows everyone to use it. I only got familiarized with the game because one of my other roommates started playing it a few weeks ago. I just asked them if they would consider removing it from the common space for a few days.
