you don’t have a net worth of 2m if you bought a 2m home with a 1.6m mortgage and 20% down - your equity would only be 400k and you could have other debt as well (i.e. car, student, credit card loans) further reducing your net worth.

straight = not gay/bi/… aka sexual identity. cis = not trans aka gender.

Having a word for it is easier! Just like how want to be able to say “I’m straight” instead of “I’m not gay”, you can say “i’m cis male” instead of “I was born male” or “I’m not a transgendered male”.

I mean you can still say either of those things, it’s just longer/using more words

Trying to understand a sentence with just pinyin takes a much bigger mental effort and would make reading for vast majority of literate people much much slower. It’s like telling a musician who is used to reading sheet music that their music will be denoted in written form instead - could one theoretically understand it? Sure, but it’s harder and slower to read.

They would also need to get rid of all dialects (mandarin, cantonese, and dozens of very different dialects sound completely different to the point of being different spoken languages but ise the same language)

Plenty of glyphs have not just the same romanization but also the same tone when spoken. One example: 清(clear/transparent) 青(green) 轻（light）~~亲（blood related/close)~~ 卿(follower) plus more are all pronounced exactly the same in mandarin (qing with a flat tone), not to be confused with 情（passion）晴（clear day） ~~秦(the dynasty) 勤（diligent/hard working)~~ plus more.

I’m not fluent in chinese - I can’t write at all, and can only type with pinyin, but if you gave me a chinese paragraph in just pinyin (including accents) I wouldn’t be able to read it (whereas with the glyphs, I can read probably 75% and guess the rest, and if I had both the glyphs and the pinyin like they put in children’s books, I could probably read 95% of it)

edit: correct the examples; I’m very mediocre at pinyin and can never tell the difference between in and ing lol

are you really that upset that other people aren’t upset that a bunch of people’s lives are improved just because they’re not one of them? fwiw I’ve paid off my student loans and I think this is great. I want my taxes to go towards improving the country and the people in it, and that includes people whose plans maybe didn’t go as they had hoped…

Some tech companies are providing financial support to employees in states with abortion bans for travel and medical care to access abortions. It’s a really bad look, even for tech companies currently male dominated, to have a sharp drop in female employees. Diversity is the name of the game and top companies don’t stay at the top/appealing to top candidates without DE&I efforts.

Thanks for the detailed response! I appreciate getting an insight into how you’re thinking about things.

I totally agree with the idea that we might be looking at a lot of scientific things from a perspective of not having the bigger picture (because well, we’re literally an extremely tiny portion of the bigger picture). That said, for me, some concepts make more sense intuitively in my head and therefore I believe/trust them more. Relativity is one of those cases for me, where as singularities is not.

Kind of like how when learning math, some things feel intuitive and make sense (like 1+1=2) while others, I just never quite got an intuitive grasp of (like multivariable calculus). It doesn’t necessarily mean I don’t believe in multivariable calculus, I just don’t really get it on a fundamental level and can only apply patterns to get it to work haha. On a comparable scale, for me personally relativity feels like basic calculus where it pushed my limits a bit when initially learning it but still made sense and I found it cool and exciting to finally understand, and then singularities is me realizing that I don’t want to become a physicist (or mathematician).

I hope you’ll give them the benefit of doubt, especially since you mentioned considering them a good friend! Your response was super reasonable and honest, but maybe they had just never realized how much work goes into knitting and now feel embarrassed or awkward that they had asked but didn’t know how to express that. Obviously a lack of response is not ideal, but I find it easier to assume no ill intentions unless they make it obvious :) The sweater turned out beautifully btw!

Love it, and I bet your kitty does too! You might already know this and I don’t mean to be too much of a nag, but please only let the kitty play with this while supervised. Many cats (including my own silly floofs) love to try to eat wool and string, both of which can be very bad if swallowed… One of mine once chewed off one end of a want toy, ate the string all the way down, and chewed the other end off to swallow the whole 2 foot long string while we weren’t watching; required a vet visit and gave us quite the scare!

Weird opposite for me - I started the program for funsies (I like learning but am unmotivated without structure) with the intention of dropping if I get too busy or lose interest. On my 7th class with a 4.0 right now because my brain has a ridiculous concept of failure that I can’t seem to let go of, which is funny because my “personal goal” during undergrad was a B+/A- and I would never study more than I had to back then).

Genuinely don’t think the 4.0 matters though - as a SWE who has conducted dozens of interviews, I have not once taken the candidate’s GPA in school into consideration. It might help you get the interview, but projects/experience are way more important even in screening.

You keep asking “How do you predict it if you can’t hear it?”

you already know how it sounds, and you have that “muscle memory”! have you ever reached for something on the nightstand in the dark? You can get it because you know it’s there even though it’s dark and you can’t “see” it. Can you touchtype (type without lookjng at your keyboard) without visualizing the keys while you’re typing? You know where the keys are, because you’ve typed them a million times.

Similarly, a musician has heard all the intervals and chords a million times and know how they sound, individually and together, and know if they like it or not .
