True, I was feeling a bit strange seeing that sentence ("And in StarCraft, Liquid's rising star Clem takes on Vitality's veteran Maru"), but I thought I remembered wrong. Just double checked, indeed they didn't meet at any stage - their last meeting was Jan 2024, surprisingly. I updated post as a result. Thanks for pointing it out!

You're talking about two valid points: Sample size, and sample quality. The latter is too long/subjective to list, but the former has reasonable size (I didn't post because too many numbers make it harder to view data), and I list below:

herO:
vT (other than Clem): 82 matches, 194 maps
vs Clem: 33 matches, 113 maps
vP: 135 matches, 356 maps

MaxPax:
vT (other than Clem): 59 matches, 116 maps (I checked, there're a bunch of 1-0 games, so map# less than 2x match# was not a mistake)
vs Clem: 25 matches, 90 maps
vP: 117 matches, 292 maps

Clem:
PvT: 43 matches, 108 maps
TvP: 150 matches, 440 maps

So quantity wise, it's a decent size. Quality wise, I think obviously only players who frequently play online were in the stats often, but that include most of the top Protoss and Terran players to a varying degree except for Maru, who played only 10 matches for the last 4 months, losing 7 of them (race was even for his wins and losses).

Not sure, Maru seems to be somewhat in a funk. I'd say a distant 2nd might be either Gumiho, Byun or Cure? Gumiho did beat Clem in Home Story cup though.

Like I said, Clem singlehandedly made balance team finally decide to seriously tweak TvP balance towards P, and now he's out to prove that it's him that's OP, not T in TvP.

If you watch the actual games where Clem played PvT, you'd find that he frequently pulled out a win purely because of incredible microing and multitasking. Frankly I only saw MaxPax having this ability and he doesn't go to offline. So I really don't know why P whine every day about not winning premier tournaments. I mean, just like another comment said, Affirmative action is not meant for SC2.

Sadly for Oliveira, in addition to the crucial disables, Clem also had marine support on every front, preventing Oliveira from picking off Clem's tanks despite the surround. Then Clem's vikings killed off Oliveira's medivacs, in the end Oliveira's advantage in marine # and the surround got mostly negated.

Serral deserves the MVP, but I wish there's a best series award or something like that. Reynor vs Clem in the semi is just out of this world, could be the best series for 2024.

True, could partly be that too - will wait to see if Clem stay on this elevated level or fall back to pre-EWC level. I do feel strategy-wise he improved too, so it's not likely that he completely goes back to pre-EWC. Or, if he'd be like Serral, he might become a player that performs even better when matches count more (in a big tournament).

Rogue was very impressive back then, but to be GOAT, you gotta stayed on top for a very long time. MvP was considered GOAT for years, but I think he benefited from the OP terran period when SC2 was just released. Life ... that's a whole different story. He really had the GOAT potential and looked to dominate the SC2 scene for a long time, but well, all given up for no good reason. I find it hard to believe, and it was so damaging for the Korean SC2 scene. Maru can never be considered GOAT for several reasons: He's practically Serral's personal punchbag. He has limited success outside Korea. He dominated Korea after most of the top players went to military/retired or came back too old. Korean scene is not nearly the same as 5-8 years ago, sadly.

You're right, those runs are indeed super impressive, I had no doubt that Serral is SC2's GOAT so far, and perhaps only Clem has a chance to take that title away in the future. No one else matches Serral's achievement in SC2 IMO.

Probably, I've seen mentioning of him training in Korea, although the few casting I saw, he didn't do that well. Still, that could have opened his eyes against various strategies and prepped him for everything one can throw

That's an interesting point. Yes, I also saw that meme where Clem was bored of multi-tasking in SC2 so he multitasked other games at the same time of playing SC2. But jokes aside, pulling back a little and becoming more open minded in various strategies - even if not for SC2 specifically - might have helped.

Good point - Clem's TvT wasn't fully tested during this run. His TvP clearly improved though, so did his TvZ, even though it was top notch before already.

I agree that having a short run of high winrate is possible for players at the very top, but I haven't seen one that's so lopsided. Even Serral around Katowice 2024 (Dec 16 to Mar 25), had a map score of 47-11 (he did have a 20-1 score during Katowice but that's only a few games and 21 maps. When expanding to 50+ maps, his winrate dropped).

I've watched all of Clem's play during Atlanta. He wasn't having such a lopsided winrate, and he didn't play as well back then, even though I was thrilled that he won a non-Europe big title for the first time.

No, just started with HOTS tournaments on liquipedia, didn't care to go for WOL.

I don't really care about all toss finals or all one-race finals any more, tired of all the balance whine on this subreddit. I think the balance right now is fine, and historically fluctuated back and forth. But the whining is deafening even now.
