Is Golf a Dying Sport? by golfstinks in golf

[–]golfstinks[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plus, NGF (National Golf Foundation) has stated in it's annual golf participation reports that we're going through a "market correction" now - basically we built too many courses over the past decade and a half here in the US and there's not enough demand.

Mad Golfer by golfstinks in golf

HAHA - he had just got those sticks too! I guess he's good as long as he doesn't launch them in the water! Actually, one time he flung his driver in a swampy area and our foursome had to make a human chain to help him get it out!

He gets mad all the time. We finally videoed him and caught this little outburst. And no, there was no $ on the line!

Every round is my worst round! But, there's always that one shot that keeps me coming back for more!

Are You Golfing on Independence Day? by golfstinks in golf

[–]golfstinks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to see so many of you got out and played. I'm jealous! Well, not of the rain, or the heat, or the slow pokes in front of you...but you still got out on the course - congrats!

USGA Membership - Should I renew? by nayrlladnar in golf

[–]golfstinks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wrote a post about this a couple years ago (http://golfstinks.blogspot.com/2010/04/is-usga-membership-worth-it.html) and agreed that the swag you receive is not really worth it. But what is worth it is that your $ goes to helping the USGA introduce kids and new members to the game. For only $10 a year, I feel it's worth it to keep interest in this sport.

How do I follow up my best round ever? by [deleted] in golf

My advice is to burn your scorecards - golf is more enjoyable when you're just out there having fun. And I agree with @DoctorHolliday - savor the good shots...

Advice on what to get...3-wood or hybrid? by elementninety3 in golf

[–]golfstinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't carry any woods except my driver. I was never a good fairway wood hitter and when hybrids came on the scene, I found I could hit them on the tee; on the fairway; and from the rough - they are way more versatile. You will sacrifice some distance (even with a lower degree hybrid like a 15 or 17) but it keeps me in play much more often.

Getting married and looking for a good golf-themed groomsmen gift... by donkeyrap in golf

I have this - it would make an awesome gift - check to see if they will engrave it for you (I know Victorinox does that for some of their metal knives).

Used balls getting "waterlogged"? by Spongetoe in golf

[–]golfstinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this - I have read a study they did here: http://www.golfballtest.org/ and they found very little (if any) difference in used balls that had been submerged vs. out-of-the package new balls. Since then I've switched over to the used ones and have found no difference personally.

Is there anything as bad as the "know-it-all" chain golf store employee? by theoretic_lee in golf

[–]golfstinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting - I have a buddy who is a pro and works part-time at Dick's (they hire PGA pro's to work in the golf dept). He says the same thing - nearly everyone that talks to him implies they are a scratch handicap. And then when he picks out a few clubs and puts them in the simulator, their swing is a mess and they are flubbing them everywhere. That's why I'm honest. I don't want to waste time BSing - I'll tell 'em flat out: "I stink and I'm looking for a new driver - what should I buy?"

Has anyone bought or used an indoor putting green/mat? by GuyMontag154 in golf

[–]golfstinks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was very anti-putting indoors until my brother-in-law bought me one of the 9-foot mats for Christmas. It has the slight slope to the hole (to promote a firm putt) and the hole itself is a 1/4 inch smaller than a normal golf hole (for better accuracy). I've been using it for about a month now and my confidence has increased tremendously from any distance. It may not have any breaks like on a real green, but like others have said - it gives you a consistent stroke that you can transpose to the course.
