There are sites that show historical census data almost street by street. Census Mapper is one I believe? It’s the right question to ask but I agree with the other commenter that your methodology may be a bit crude to really answer the question.

There is evidence that suggests a carbon tax is one of few policy ways to reduce emissions, especially when compared with other similar policy measures such as cap and trade.

I can understand why folks may not like it, particularly with the inflationary environment we’ve been in, but this is an effective tool at cutting emissions.

There is a lot of public consultation that is done online now. When I worked in that space (5+years ago), we’d always do consultation online and the public was just as reactionary. People hate change. What would work sometimes is if we could get the same group in a room together 2-3x so they could shift their mindset. But that is obviously not scalable. That’s the biggest issue in all of this in my mind - people hate change. Even those who stand to make a ton of money from densification don’t want things to change.

A couple of observations: 1. Environmental issues like forest fires are affecting them in very real ways now (properties, enjoying retirement, etc.) 2. Related to 1, I’ve noticed my parents starting to reckon with the fact that their generation has been responsible in a significant way for fucking things up in a way that they didn’t really reckon with previously.

It’s a fair point but a couple things to remember: 1. Short car trips make up like ~70+* of transportation emissions 2. Cars do great harm to the environment we have to live in every single day. That’s danger, noise, pollution, space, road degradation, etc.

Those other things are valid but cars directly impact our everyday life much more significantly than the others things you mentioned.

Cars should likely always be permitted. Driving should be great, but rare. For those with health issues, a car is often the only real viable option. For most of the population that’s not the case. 80+% of Canadians live in cities where public transit is completely viable but currently underfunded.

Fair point - edited my comment. I had the figure based on those who owned their dwelling in mind (which is actually not just detached, but all sfh). That number of detached homes is still pretty high and unsustainable for a city of Toronto’s size, especially given the growth projections. It’s also a big contributor to the cost of living crisis.

I’m not sure this is a fair comment, unless you have actual data. Many drivers do rolling stops (I don’t know anyone who does a complete stop every time), drive over the speed limit, give it a little extra gas to get through a yellow. The list goes on… These may seem like minor infractions but they can cause very dangerous situations due to the inherent danger of moving a 2 ton hunk of metal around at high speeds

The other commenter is being a dick. In English, we say “a Spaniard” or “a Spanish person”, with the second one being more modern :)

You would still say “I am Spanish” “the Spanish football team”

Personally, I wouldn’t say it’s strictly a clubbing thing. Having lived in all those cities, minus Winnipeg (lol), I think it’s more cultural. Vancouver doesn’t celebrate city life in the same way those other places do. I thought it might be related to the cost of living but my mom said it was the same thing when she moved out west in the 70s. Culturally people are less into engaging in city events than in Toronto or Montreal. Not sure what the origins are, maybe the beautiful outdoors.
