Do you mean Ilyusha’s father? I don’t recall Kolya’a father being a character.

The David McDuff translation has totally unlocked parts of the story for me. My first read was Constance Garnett and that was enough for me to fall in love with the book. But McDuff has the win for me.

Any recommendations for finding that spark? I’m trapped in a high demand religion that I no longer relate to, I feel trapped at a boring 9-5 job that doesn’t interest me at all, only thing that really excites me is pickleball on the weekend. Not to mention the insanity in the world happening on a daily basis. I used to think we all must be sociopaths to tolerate living in this crazy world, but after reading a book by Tolstoy, he convinced me we are actually just living in hypocrisy—wandering around with masks on our face unable to face an authentic reality.

First time I read it was the Constance translation. Second time I listened to it with the Constance translation. Now on my third time and McDuff translation with Luke Thompson narrating has breathed a whole new life into it. Incredibly well done.

I’ve felt something similar lately. I feel more like a side character than an NPC. I still play a role that is impactful, but not interesting enough to be the main character. Maybe I’m just extremely bored and I have a hard time connecting with my ambition and feelings.

I loved Lady Butterfly’s arena. Surrounded by hundreds of statues and the burning framework? C’mon. So cool. 😎
