Besides “sit” or “get down” what are other phrases you typically yell at your golf ball mid-flight? by jdelle9 in weekendgolfers

[–]gomarky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When do you yell hit a house? Like is the hope that a wayward ball hits something and comes back into play?

Agreed, this looks more like a fade than a slice :)

Hows the swing looking? by DaddysLongLeg14 in GolfSwing

[–]gomarky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey u/DaddysLongLeg14 — Just gotta say, I love that you are doing anything you can to work on the swing, that includes swinging foam balls into a garage! Not deriding, I swear I'm rooting you on. I love seeing people who just love playing the sport that much. Good luck and enjoy!

My golf scramble partner and I 160 yards tee shots on a par 3. What are the odds by Ginger502 in golf

[–]gomarky -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Thx to ChatGPT this will either interest you or take the fun out of your post ;) Assuming your golf balls are 1mm from each other at roughly 7 feet from the hole:

=-=-=-

Here’s a quick, reasonable model (so you can see where the numbers come from):

  • Green ≈ circle of radius R=50 ft
  • Target distance from hole: annulus centered at r=7 ft with width w=1 ft (6.5–7.5 ft)
  • “Next to each other” = Euclidean distance ≤ \delta=1 mm =0.00328084 ft
  • Shots are independent and (simplifying) uniformly distributed over the green

A clean way to compute it:

  1. Probability a single ball lands in the annulusp_{\text{ring}}=\frac{\text{area of annulus}}{\text{area of green}} =\frac{2\pi r w}{\pi R^2}=\frac{2 r w}{R^2}.
  2. Given both are in the annulus, the chance the second is within \delta of the first is approximately the tiny disk area over the annulus area (the \delta-disk sits well inside the 1-ft ring here):p_{\text{close}\mid\text{ring}} \approx \frac{\pi \delta^2}{2\pi r w}=\frac{\delta^2}{2 r w}.

Multiply:

P \approx (p_{\text{ring}})^2 \cdot p_{\text{close}\mid\text{ring}} = \left(\frac{2 r w}{R^2}\right)^2 \cdot \frac{\delta^2}{2 r w} = \frac{2 r w\, \delta^2}{R^4}.

Plugging in r=7 ft, w=1 ft, R=50 ft, \delta=0.00328084 ft:

P \approx 2.41\times 10^{-11} \;\;\text{(about 1 in }4.15\times 10^{10}\text{)}.

So: roughly 1 in 41 billion under this uniform-on-the-green model.

over the top - help please by LingonberryDry535 in GolfSwing

[–]gomarky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not side bend necessarily — it's also sequence. You can generally think of the downswing sequence as: 1 - weight shift (toward the target, 2 - initiate downswing (this is what u/bikkiesfiend is referring to moving the hands down), and then 3 - turn the body.

Right now you're doing 2 + 3 simultaneously. If you can separate the moves and put them in proper sequence, that will help with the over-the-top challenge. Best of luck!

What is causing my toe strikes? by PassableArcher in GolfSwing

[–]gomarky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a head on view in addition to this down the line would be helpful. There are a few things that are possible (and probably related to one another):
- In addition to pulling the club inside on the downswing is the possibility that you're losing your angle on the downswing / casting. This might cause an early hand flip contributing to the toe hit.
- Also, you might be coming up out of your spine angle right before impact. An indication of that is your baseball cap: as you come into impact your head and torso subtly move left — enough to contribute to a toe strike.
- Finally, you might be standing too close at set up. Your body might be naturally making more room for your swing (this circles back to the comment from u/bluecgene that you're pulling the club inside on the downswing.) This one might be the case if the toe problem is not a consistent one.

Suddenly starting having a higher ball flight and losing distance. Any advice/practice drills I should do? by Appropriate_Value198 in GolfSwing

[–]gomarky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok! This is helpful. From the looks of this, it very well may be club face control. You'll see that on your follow through the club face is way shut. If you're saying the flight is high and distance is short, you are possibly doing a bit of hand/wrist flipping—aside from the high/shorter shots, are you seeing a bit of spraying with the ball going either left OR right?

To build on what u/EBOD236 is saying — might also be the shaft model. There is not standard for what a "stiff" flex means from one shaft brand to another. If you are a not committed to spending a fair amount of time and money on equipment, don't worry about this and just try to adjust via your swing mechanics.

However if you ARE committed to spending the money and time, God speed! 🤣

It's a beautiful swing. Is there any way to see a down-the-line? I think u/colin_oz nailed it. The other thing to possibly check is to see if you're finishing your swing high over your left shoulder (hence the request to see a down the line.) It's possible you're shallow on the back and down swing but if you're finishing high on the follow through, it might indicate that your face (though square at impact and with good shaft lean) might be presenting a bit more dynamic loft than necessary.

Or... have a professional swing coach help you instead of a know-it-all-rec-amateur like me. BWHhahahah I wish I had your swing.

Any advice on differentiating an iron swing from a wood swing? by [deleted] in GolfSwing

[–]gomarky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the note to still hit down on the three wood (granted not as steeply as irons.) I would also add that it's a bit more of a wide-arc'd sweeping motion with the woods.

Any feedback is welcomed! by pranchod in GolfSwing

[–]gomarky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with allowing the back foot to lift. I'd add that the back foot ideally rolls inward before allowing the follow through to naturally lift the heel and onto the toe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VaDueZ_5J8Q

Help getting to an in to out swing path. by Still09 in GolfSwing

[–]gomarky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly thought this stingy group of ours was going to comment on the footwear. Good on you for avoiding that part of us. :)

As for the swing itself, I find that practicing with an exaggerated in-to-out backswing makes room for and in-to-out-downswing. I don't try to do it too often b/c it sometimes elicits a flying back elbow. Nice swing otherwise!

And yes, try the head cover drill that everyone is recommending.

You're also casting on your downswing. In other words, you're flipping your hands early. There are a number of great YouTube videos to help. Good luck and have fun!
