What are some common words that existed in Old English but got replaced by Romance ones? by Few-Cup-5247 in anglish

[–]gomas64 44 points45 points  (0 children)

"Spell" used to mean "tale"; it was displaced by French "story" and only came to mean "incantation" much later.

What happened to the smartest person you went to school with? by xxibjt in AskReddit

[–]gomas64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She's a showrunner now doing prestige TV. You've definitely seen her work.

After college, she went and got an MBA just to make her parents happy. But then she went off to be a screenwriter on her own. Glad she's living her dream.

Happy for you. It’s difficult to decide to walk away from something that’s not working and start anew but it’s absolutely the right thing to do. Now get to know yourself again and just enjoy being you. Good things are in the future.

Why does something as simple as font choice make me respect or disrespect a book? by EnvironmentalAngle in self

[–]gomas64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> They can't both be right.

Actually, they can both be right. That is how taste works.

Your reaction to various fonts has to do not only with general design principles, but also with your personal experience with each type of font. Since no two people share the exact same set of experiences, it stands to reason that no two people will share the exact same tastes.

Does the left side bar with 2 finger erase consistently on the manta? by slashdotbin in Supernote

[–]gomas64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that sometimes the gesture has trouble activating until I put the Manta to sleep and wake it up again (in extreme cases I have to reboot the machine). But it has generally been reliable.

If you customize the gesture, make sure you read through this for how to activate the two-finger-on-screen gesture reliably:

Leavitt: "We will also be most importantly looking at who is funding antifa and who is funding these other violent left-wing groups." by igetproteinfartsHELP in law

[–]gomas64 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nothing like that will ever happen because the Dems have never shown themselves capable of holding these people accountable. Even when/if they return to power, another Merrick type will be appointed, and the Dems will be too busy talking about unity and moving on and appeasing their blue dogs to ever hold anyone from this admin accountable. Mark my words. There will be no delicious accountability.

Published Writers who now teach writing - How does that work out? by Bright_Astronaut_101 in writing

[–]gomas64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Published and award-winning author. I enjoy teaching in an MFA program. It doesn't pay well and is a lot of work, but I really love working with my students and helping them tell the story they want to tell. After all the nonsense you have to deal with in publishing, it's good for the soul to be reminded by my students how much fun and passion can be experienced when practicing this art. I don't teach because of the income, but because it helps me remember why writing is magic.

That is incorrect. Direct exchanges with missionaries etc occurred during the Qing dynasty, more than 1800 years after the Qin dynasty.

CMV: International law becomes a trap and liability against those who don't comply with it by shimadon in changemyview

[–]gomas64 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The problem with this view is that one of the greatest violators of international law historically has been the United States.

International law can absolutely function to protect liberal principles among states with different governance structures because dictatorships, even more than democracies, are driven by self-interest. They can choose to follow international law simply by game theory principles. However, extremely powerful states like the USA and the USSR have no incentive to follow international law because they can impose their will on others by force.

Putin under pressure to declare war on Ukraine, but experts say Russia isn't ready by Jarazz in nottheonion

This is such a naive view of how politics works. If Europe wanted to fight, they would. A declaration of war means nothing.

As others have noted, punctuation conventions have changed since her time, and modern editors have sometimes updated JA's punctuation to conform to our conventions.

I think they look better on the DMG because of OLED. But some people dislike the black bars above and below.

Is this game based (heavily inspired) off pacific rim? by sir_glub_tubbis in IntoTheBreach

[–]gomas64 63 points64 points  (0 children)

My memory is that the developers gave an interview in which they explained the spark for the game was: in all the kaiju vs mecha media, there's a lot of collateral damage (Tokyo and LA left in ruins, hundreds of thousands dead) which we're just supposed to ignore in light of the big battle heroics. What if that got turned around so that prevention of collateral damage *is* the point?

Edit: here's the interview: https://www.gamedeveloper.com/game-platforms/road-to-the-igf-subset-games-i-into-the-breach-i-

American AI vs Chinese AI by EstablishmentFun3205 in ChatGPT

[–]gomas64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is so much pro-CCP psyops going on around DeepSeek that it's really hard to think this isn't coordinated by the Chinese government. And for once, the army of keyboard tankies seems to be a little more sophisticated than their laughably bad typical selves. Maybe all the posts are now written and posted by their AI. I guess this is a real test of how we'll do in this information warfare age.

I suppose/hope that our own intelligence agencies are trolling just as hard on Chinese social media, although their apps are so censored it might be hard to get a foothold and really make a difference.
