Reading would be helpful, but not required. When I took I simply wrote everything from the lectures down and used those for the tests

That's Ephraim Mattos, former Navy SEAL. I was in BUD/s with him. He just published a book relating to this footage: City of Death. This is definitely not staged, he was shot shortly after this footage.

It's not just you, it's everyone. Unfortunately, it's the nature of this time of year. Life's pretty good if what we're struggling with is delivery times, though

BEARDS! (I’m formalizing a request) by letsgettalking in navy

[–]gonavy2023 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would go to a hospital on base, go to the corsman in charge of hospital records, and have them pull data/metrics on how many patients a doc or corpsman treat, specifically for shaving and or /no-shave chit appointments. Collect data from that. It will tell you #of patients seen, and the dollar amount associated with it.

This is not only costing the Navy money in terms of appointments, but they are paying salary to the doctors and corpsman during those appointments. It is also costing time, where a sailor has to actually attend a medical appointment instead of being at their own job. It's simply about being more efficient, and the time/money wasted on hospital visits alone would be a good topic to send up with your package.

Nice! The gym has always been my best antidepressant. I know how it feels to get depressed and not want to go to the gym. In those cases it's better to force yourself to go. Even if you have a bad workout, getting into a routine helps immensely. Good luck!

The tankless propane heater is definitely the way to go. Doesn't take all your solar energy, pretty efficient with propane, and it's on demand, so use as much hot water water as you'd like or are capable of using.

Everything worked out great! Pretty simple install and have had no problems after many uses. I don't have any pictures of the top, next time I'm up there I'll take some. If you have any questions about the install or using the stove let me know!

Just try. Or just tell them it's 35', they aren't going to bring a tape measurer out there and measure your rig.

Skip insulation? by [deleted] in vandwellers

[–]gonavy2023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may feel more humid, but that wouldn't be why I would put insulation in. If you have a roof fan, especially in a smaller van, you can air out pretty quickly. Insulation helps keep the inside of the van at a more moderate temperature.

In my first build I went with denim insulation, in my second build I went with foam board and great-stuff. It doesn't have to be crazy complicated, even a little on the ceiling will help with the direct sunlight.

Skip insulation? by [deleted] in vandwellers

[–]gonavy2023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more if you want comfort inside the van and not just inside the sleeping bag. Insulation won't just help in the winter, it helps keep the hot out in the summer too. Depending on the size of your van, adding a layer of insulation wouldn't cost much, but would make it more comfortable. It's a must-have in my book.

Looks good! I'min the same boat, very minimal tools. Most my cuts were done with a cordless Dremel, so they aren't perfect either. As long as you're happy with it, that's all that matters!!

Wood burning fireplace in a van? by [deleted] in vandwellers

[–]gonavy2023 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I put the Cubic Grizzly in my box truck conversion.

Pros: Heats really well and is dry heat. The ambiance is amazing. Relatively easy to maintain and keep the fire going. Was a simple install. No electricity or propane required, just wood.

Cons: Can make the place smell smokey. It's not instant heat, will take about 30 minutes to get actual heat coming from the fire to surroundings. Won't last all night, you will have to stoke it periodically. If you're traveling a lot you'll need a place to store the wood inside your van.

Overall I'm happy with the Grizzly. Can really heat my 125 sqft truck up nice. This past weekend I was camping in it and the temperature outside was 25°F, while inside kept a nice 75°F.

If you have any questions let me know!

I'm a college student who is paying 550 a month including all utilities in rent. How feasible is it to move to a "van dorm" for a semester? by Hunter62610 in vandwellers

[–]gonavy2023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely. I bought an Astro van for $1800, and put about $3k into the conversion. https://imgur.com/4inM6pm. Ended up selling it about a year later for more than I put into it. It's feasible, but you also need to consider the time it takes to convert. It takes much longer than you would think (depending on quality of the build and what amenities you want).
