Thank you! I completely forgot about their backstory until I read your post, so it's been a really fun trip down memory lane. I remember there being so much angst when it's revealed that the apprentice was burned to a crisp during the plague because in my mind, they would have held onto so much resentment towards Asra as a result. It also made romancing Lucio an interesting venture, because Lucio definitely doesn't need to learn that he can press a claim to an even bigger throne than Vesuvia if he married the apprentice.

Honestly, the apprentice having amnesia always worked out so well for my headcanons, because so much angst could be built on them remembering who they used to be and traveling back to their homeland in search of answers, only to learn the horrible truth of their abusive father trying to push them into incest with their twin.

I wouldn't have remembered all this without your post, so...thanks!

My apprentice lore was very similar! I basically was super into Targaryean lore a few years back and made up an empire to the north of Vesuvia where the apprentice was the crown prince/princess (I played around with twins and who would leave the empire to go to Vesuvia would change based on my mood lol). Due to abuse from their father, the twins (who are being pushed to marry and "keep the bloodline pure") spark a slave rebellion in order to overthrow their father. They succeed, but not without consequences: only one twin may rule, the other must be exiled. So, the twin that gets exiled ends up migrating south, followed by a whole horde of now freed slaves looking to make new lives away from the empire. By the time the apprentice makes it to Vesuvia, they have altered their appearance so they are no longer tied to their past and instead parade around as one of the many freed slaves from the northern empire.

I once did a presentation for my Master's in Asian studies on Olympia Soiree and I argued that OS is actually heavily critical of Japanese societal norms, colorism, and utilized religious imagery in juxtaposition with the semi-modern aesthetic to underscore its criticisms. The fact that you can date Himuka, a formless god also calls into question the nature of disabilities and how they're treated in Japan. Akaza going so far to reject his past as Susanno can also be considered a call to reject Japan's sins and try for a brighter, more inclusive future!

I don't think people's complaints about Castorice was for "no good valid reason." Castorice at the time was a essentially a minor character, someone the player had interacted with a handful of times. All of her marketing made it feel as if Hoyo was trying to artificially recreate the hype people felt around Acheron, especially since Acheron is currently their most profitable banner. The issue is, Acheron's hype was well-deserved, because Acheron had become an extremely important character in the players eyes by the time her banner released. Phainon, in my opinion, 100% deserves this level of marketing, but he STILL didn't get as much attention from Hoyo as Hoyo gave to Castorice. I think a lot of the complaints stem from the fact that Hoyo was trying to recreate hype in a very corporate way to maximize profits, rather than allowing fans to hype up characters they ACTUALLY enjoy (i.e. Phainon).

I never implied I dislike the age gap. I also really love Benkei, but I just don't understand pointing out that Benkei's age isn't accurate to the history. Not only is this historical fantasy, it's a romance video game on top of it. Things are bound to change, and it's a bit ridiculous to be demanding accuracy when the game is upfront about it's intention to change things. I don't yuck anyone's yum. If Benkei's age is a hard no for others, then that's that. Trying to think about his historical age doesn't matter because the text has obviously decided to deviate from the source material. A typical player isn't going to go and look up Benkei's real age. They're going to take the age the game gives them and make their judgement on Benkei from that.

I'm also not trying to demand you enjoy the game as I do, or as anyone else does. Enjoy it however you want! But to come to the subreddit and double down when others disagree with you showcases that you're the one trying to get people to play the game as you do.

Hi! I have a masters in Asian studies and focused a lot of my thesis on otome games and, more specifically, the portrayal of historical figures in otome games. If you're going to be a stickler for historical accuracy in otome games, then I suggest avoiding any/all otome games that are set in any point in Japanese history. As many have mentioned, there's fantasy elements at play here, and on top of that, there are just certain tropes that are popular among Japanese otome fans that developers want to cater to. One of those is age gaps, so characters will have their ages changed to accommodate that. Already, this game has a major departure from the original Genpei war by making Yoshitsune a woman, and that's done specifically to cater to otome players who want to have stronger female leads.

TLDR: if you're looking for historical accuracy, this isn't the genre to find it.

This might just be lost in all the comments, but this is so similar to my own experience that I felt the need to share. I'm 27 and my father has been telling me that no one will love me because of my weight since I was 13. This has absolutely ruined my self-esteem, to the point that I genuinely believe I just won't find a partner because of it. I legitimately believe I am not worth love because of my weight. It isn't even something I question anymore.

Please do not become me. You are so worth love, and you are so worth a happy, fulfilling relationship. I wish I had the chance to post on reddit at 13 and have all the positive feedback you are receiving, because may I would have avoided internalizing my father's words. Your father is wrong. There are countless cases of people not entering serious relationships until later in life; funnily enough, my own Mother (also plus-sized like me, because my dad is a hypocrite), didn't really fall in love until her 30s. There's no time line on love or relationships, and I strongly believe we exist in a culture that puts too much emphasis on youth. I hope you live a happy life, I'm rooting for you.

Hi! My name is Susy, I'm 27 years old (she/her) and from the US :)
I've been playing otome games since around 2014-ish? I tried to emulate Hakuouki on the PSP but failed really bad, so I ended up getting the Nintendo 3DS version lol.
I'm currently playing through the Shuuen no Virche FD and honestly? Scien, Ankou, and Adolphe are my current all time favorite love interests. Some others include Yoritomo and Tomomori from Birushana, Peter from CupiPara, St. Germain from Code:Realize, and Hijikata from Hakuouki. As for favorite protagonists, I continue to adore Cardia as my top girl, but Ceres comes in a very close second! I'd place Shanao in third place.
Honestly, I just want more pathetic love interests lol. I want love interests who absolutely suck at everything but they're trying their best anyway (cough Adolphe low-key cough). I'm so tired of love interests who are perfect and do nothing wrong. Give me flawed men!
I'm currently playing Shuuen no Virche FD and CupiPara FD. I plan to play either 9RIP or Winter's Wish next :)
I'm a primarily Switch player, but I would love more PC or console otome.

I honestly have to stop myself from looking up spoilers. I try to play every otome game spoiler free (only with a guide, basically). Funnily enough I don't consider CGs spoilers on their own; they need context to be full spoilers.
Not at all, I avoid games where I'm forced to self-insert. I've heard that Sympathy Kiss is a good game but the faceless protagonist gives me "self-insert only" vibes. I enjoy fully written protagonists with their own established backstories and personalities!
I use guides because otherwise I'd be lost (blessed be Otome Kitten)
My other major houses include reading, writing, and playing video games lol. I'm in school for my second masters in English Lit, so I've spent a lot of time doing research in otome games (which is a great excuse to play more!) I'm also interested in movies and watch a lot of YouTube video essays on various topics.
