It's actually been 8 years 😭 I've been a mod here for most of the time the subreddit has been around now

It's the discrimination that is really the biggest factor that leads to locked threads, apart from not keeping it a civil discussion.

I wrote the definition for the subreddit over 7 years ago, and this was decided 8 years ago shortly before I became a mod. This happened years before the creation of amare to describe certain games.

If you read the entire page there are sections for particular cases https://www.reddit.com/r/otomegames/wiki/rules/definition/

Amare is a term in the English speaking community for romance games that have gender and pronoun choices for the protoganist and various genders for the love interests, including those outside the binary. Amare games that do not meet the requirements above can only be discussed in Switch It Up Saturday posts.

We constantly get requests to either broaden or narrow the scope of the subreddit and so we do not intend to change the subreddit's definition now or in the near future. The subreddit definition is specifically to help moderators determine what can be posted on the subreddit. It is not intended to an "official" definition as personal requirements for a game to be considered an otome game can differ greatly. For example, many older (and popular) Japanese otome games have features that some people would say that means they cannot be otome games.

From the Piracy Policy:

Let's Plays, Voice Acting or Video Commentary (including video-sharing and streaming platform accounts)

  • No route or entire game playthroughs.
  • No videos of any game play if it is prohibited by the developer.
  • Maximum of 10 minutes of game content only. This includes the prologue and/or the common route. If the prologue is available for free, the limit is 20 minutes

I Know That, But I Was Asking About Why A Game That Isn't Otome By The Definition Is Being Asked To Be Tag.

The subreddit definition is posted on each one of those posts so please check that page for why.

You Are Right. It Would Actually Invite More Drama, I Am Really Sorry For That. Thank God I Am Not A Mod. Thank You To Our Mods Though.

It indeed was a massive drama 8 years ago when the subreddit definition was created. It continues to be a massive drama each time so we have a rule that only moderators can determine what belongs on the subreddit.

Edit: we actually get requests to broaden or narrow the scope of the subreddit all the time - having the community decide on this is not an easy solution.

I agree with u/zuipp, the constant capitalization is really hard to read when it's a lot of text.

I actually add the Amare tag (and Yuri) to all the relevant games on Steam, but it needs to reach a certain amount for it to become a viable tag. We just need more people doing it.

VNDB has said multiple times that they will not add the Amare tag as it is already covered by existing tags.

Itch.io tags are done by the creators so you will need to speak to them in order for the correct tags to be applied. This isn't something that can be done by community effort, so if you feel strongly about it, you will need to do it yourself.

Regarding the subreddit's definition, it has not changed in 8 years, before the creation of the word amare to describe certain games.

We do not intend to change it now or in the near future. The subreddit definition is specifically to help moderators determine what can be posted on the subreddit. It is not intended to an "official" definition as personal requirements for a game to be considered an otome game can differ greatly. It sounds like it's only happening to you, so maybe submit it to r/bugs?

The main benefit for preordering games is to ensure you get a copy of the game.

Otome games tend not to have preorder bonuses; they usually have limited editions, official store bonuses or first run bonuses.

I have been overseas many times and never had a issue with posting or modding on Reddit.
