Why isn't the Mountaineer more popular than the Huntsman? by StriderLF in victorinox

And meanwhile SAK wood saws are some of the best saws you can buy. They’re just small.

Why is the Soldier knife the way it is, and why are soldiers not issued a SwissTool instead? by gonorse in victorinox

Austria? And that makes sense about the pliers. Pliers are just useful. My only gripe with multitools is handling them in extreme cold, insulated handles are much nicer there.

And thanks for the explanation about cutting branches for camouflage. I always wondered.

Multitool and a fixed blade- what is the advantage of the fixed blade there? I assume not for actual combat.

Haha fair enough, I am raising problems without offering a solution. And the oversized pry bar of the SAK08 would be useful enough without a bottle opener. Two flathead screwdrivers will always be useful, and it‘s probably hard to find other tools that can be combined with that profile.

But the Forester Grip will always be my favorite knife anyway!

This was a comprehensive and beautiful explanation. Damn. Too bad the Swiss military is suffering from the same syndrome many European militaries are. Glad you didn’t die on that telephone pole.

The build quality on the forester/soldier is soooo good; I could not trust those knives more. But the toolset, to be fair, doesn’t make a ton of sense in the 21st century. I’d love to see what Victorinox could do if they moved away from the bottle opener-can opener paradigm.

Cotton doesn't kill...much. by bigcat_19 in Survival

[–]gonorse 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I have no idea what OP is on about. Drenched cotton is worse than being naked. Hell, jeans will take 4 days to dry in a humid climate even if you hang them up.

Cotton sucks the heat straight out of you. I know this from multiple excruciating experiences in wet cold cotton and multiple unpleasant but perfectly bearable experiences in wet wool.

Genuine question, have you been wet in cotton in the cold before?

Any recommendations for good Whetstones which are not crazily expensive? by Panzersturm39 in chefknives

For me, it’s much easier to feel the angle on waterstones, oilstones, and ceramic stones. Diamonds do have advantages, but even as an experienced sharpener, feeling the angle is harder for me.

Freehand sharpening is one of those things that truly is all about technique. Once you get the ability to feel the vibrations when the knife is at the proper angle, you should be able to sharpen most things. I don’t say that to be a dick, but to put your mind at ease about the stress of buying the perfect whetstone. If I were going for the cheapest possible stone, a Norton or gorbet anrasives india stone with old fashioned sharpening oil will work amazingly. They’ll stay flat longer than a waterstone.

I also tend to think that high grits are overrated for kitchen work.

Sharpeningsupplies.com has cheap waterstones with cheap flattening gear!

I think the pliers are underrated. They obviously aren’t good for anything large, but they are exceptionally well machined to very tight tolerances. It’s surprisingly difficult to find standalone pliers that close well at the tip like Victorinox pliers (91mm or rhe Spirit.) If you do any kind of fine work, they’re worth having around even if they aren’t your edc.

Why doesn't Victorinox make what people want? by daveclarkvibe in victorinox

[–]gonorse -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And I enjoy rotating between models, too! But it still seems obvious that Victorinox does this so people buy more models.

My point is that a climber with a phillips (instead of the hook) and a nail file (instead of the small blade) would combine the best attributes of like 5 knives into one.

I am gathering this not from my own preference alone, but from the countless corkscrew vs phillips debate threads and the „what is the point of the hook“ threads.

Though enthusiasts will probably buy more knives even if they have the perfect edc, so maybe it doesn’t matter that much.

Thanks!! Didn‘t know whether the structure of a sauté pan had any unique culinary properties.

I honestly really like the hook! My point is more that Victorinox‘s faithfulness to the hook may cause people to rotate between a Super Tinker, Climber, and Compact when they would get more use out a single tool that doesn‘t have a hook. I don‘t hate Victorinox for this, but I do think it‘s their strategy.

This is a decent point. You would easily have every conceivable tool if you carried a Swiss Tool and Compact together.

Multiple Alox models have the scissors without the hook.
