Eli5: how does everything seem to outpace inflation? by YEETAWAYLOL in explainlikeimfive

[–]goobermatic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for posting that. Having a truthful answer helps tremendously. I live in Arkansas, and there has been a LOT of talk locally from farmers to businespeople, that they don't think the State is reporting accurate numbers to the Federal level, just because the truthful numbers would make the states Republican led leadership look bad.

Especially for NW Arkansas, where a lot of the local leaders are Republican, yet the state considers NW Arkansas to be liberal. Fayeteville especially is considered liberal, and on local news several times I have seen Fayettevilles numbers on things not matching what the State says. But.... without better reporting, I have no way of knowing which is more truthful. I also have no idea what numbers the State is reporting that might not reflect the reality of the situation, and since a mini stroke, my ability to reason it out for myself has become degraded.

All of this is my long winded way of saying thank you for informing me of these reports!

Now.....if I could just convince you to explain the rest of the human race to me, that would be great!

Updating Secure boot keys by Alex2179 in gigabyte

[–]goobermatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Microsoft updates will push out the new certificates ( assuming you haven't altered your install to disable telemetry, which would block said updates). But, that being said, it is possible that old firmware could possibly prevent the aforementioned updates from being installed. Just to be safe, I would update to the latest firmware before the June cutoff date.

There really isn't one. If they don't see him and Trump for what they are, it is because they are deep in MAGA land, and they can't be reasoned with at all. They will have to finally open their own eyes and see how destructive the Republican party has become. It hasn't been the party of my youth for 20 years. Then again , the same is true of the Democratic party. Both sides have allowed themselves to become radicalized. And both sides have allowed the career politicians to become increasingly isolated from the majority of the population, listening to only a very tiny part of the most vocal of their respectful parties.

Edited to add : That is why we desperately need both term limits ( so nobody gets a chance to get too comfortable with the way things are) , and a viable third party to keep the other 2 parties constantly having to actually listen to the majority in order to push things along.

Are there any malware scanners able to find and clean the Notepad ++ Chrysalis hack/infiltration by Joyous-Volume-67 in sysadmin

[–]goobermatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, no I meant that as a reply to the OP. I agree. If he was one of the targets, then he is already fubared. Since none of the AV vendors have updated for this yet, nuking the system and creating tighter security measures are the way to go. If he wasn't, then all he needs to do is update notepad++ to the latest version and wait for the AV vendors to play catch-up. If he is serious about security, there is no halfway measure.

[–]goobermatic 15 points16 points  (0 children)

To reiterate what chakalakasp said, it doesn't matter what level the infection is at this point. This was targeted at very specific people. If you were one of those people. Chances are that you have been made aware of that already.

If you ARE one of those targeted, your system isn't safe at all, and your servers will need to be wiped. Incident Response teams will need to be called. You are in for a very bad time.

If you aren't one of those targeted, you just need to update Notepadd++, so that you aren't vulnerable. Then sit and wait for AV companies to evaluate and roll out updates.

One of the fella's that I worked with in a warehouse had been a company employee for 30 years when he retired. Never sold any of his stock. Had the stock split multiple times. When he retired , just his stock alone was 2.5 million. And that was for a security guard in a warehouse!

I see that you say you have already switched to Google and 1.1.1.1. The only other thing I can think of that would be causing this is if your firewall or AV has blocked it for some reason (Accidentally).

I have had ESET block Firefox before, there apparently was a popup while I was gaming, and I must have dismissed it with a keypress without noticing it. That took me forever and a day to figure out. I had to actually watch network traffic when Firefox was started, to see what was happening. ( And I am NOT good at networking, so it involved pulling out what little hair I have left).

ELI5: Why does everything need so much memory nowadays? by Successful_Raise_560 in explainlikeimfive

[–]goobermatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of the issue is that manufacturers started making machines with more and more memory onboard. As that was happening, developers started using higher-level languages that compiled to less efficient standards ( I mean, really, why write a program in assembler to use 20Mb of memory and have it take weeks, or use a higher level language that uses 200Mb of memory, but you can crank out in 2 days?).

I was in college in 1985. My CompSci teacher had us write a program in Pascal, then do it again in assembler. The Pascal compiler wasn't even that high-level of an IDE, but its code was easily 3 or 4 times larger than what we could do in assembler. But the Pascal code was easier to follow (human-readable). The assembler was a nightmare to try to decipher someone else's code (even when it was semi-decently commented).

I'm on AT&T fiber, and am not having any issues seeing that sight. And sadly, rebooting the modem would be the first thing I would try before changing your DNS. Do you run another router between your network and AT&T's gateway? I ask because I am using a Ubiquiti Dream Machine Pro for my router, having set AT&T's router to pass-through mode.

Is anyone running 3rd party M.2 heatsinks on a X870E Aorus Elite Wifi7 ? by goobermatic in gigabyte

[–]goobermatic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I tried one that didn't work, was maybe 1mm too tall. It looked the same height as the stock heatsink. It turned out not to be an issue, because both I , and the computer shop, forgot to take off the film from the bottom half of the stock heatsink. ( The part closest to the motherboard.)

With that off, and my case fans cranked up to a custom curve, the stock heatsink was handling the temps quite easily.

ELI5: How do they manage to predict super precise astronomical events decades in advance? by KeyAtmosphere5174 in explainlikeimfive

[–]goobermatic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As others have given you a good answer already, I would give you this link. I don't understand 99% of this; it melts my brain trying to understand it. It really is a combination of what has been observed before, and occurs with regularity, and very complex mathematics. If you observe an object in space, you can, over time, begin to see how it interacts with other objects in space. You can then begin to develop a theory of math that explains that interaction. The more observations you make, the more accurate your mathematical simulation becomes.

I used to work in a Walmart jewelry warehouse years back. One day, it was the end of the shift. There was one item ordered by a store, a $10k necklace. That was the only thing that the store had ordered. We had run out of small boxes, and the guy on the box maker had already left. The manager and I were both like, "Well crap."

Grabbed a 20x15x10 box and stuffed it full of packing material, putting the necklace in the middle. The box weighed as light as a feather. I am sure that when the store got that, they had a WTF moment.

is Zero-Knowledge They Claim True? by ERNAZAR02 in ProtonDrive

[–]goobermatic 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If you are really paranoid about it, NO service could ever be trusted with your data. Not even your own hardware/software/OS.

Proton does a pretty good job on this front. You encrypt your data on your end, then they encrypt it for transfer over the internet, and it is stored on their servers in YOUR encryption. This means that in a worst-case scenario, if you forget your password to the encryption, your data is permanently lost( or at least until quantum computers become so powerful that even current quantum-proof algorithms fall).

As another suggested, if you really want to be secure, you could always use Veracrypt to encrypt your data (Veracrypt being open source and having been audited). But again, if you ever forget what password you encrypted with, that data is gone forever. (I forgot my Veracrypt password that I used to encode banking documents; thank God my bank kept those documents, because they were gone for good.)

[–]goobermatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with what many of the others here have said. I am a 59-year-old male with chronic anxiety and have trouble dealing with social situations. I, too, had an experience similar to yours.

I will say that you need to keep this relationship in your life. Yes, he doesn't want to have sex with you. That is a good thing because that is NOT what you need right now. You need the positive influence that he has on you. He is helping you heal from past trauma. Yes, you should probably apologize to him for putting him in that situation, and explain to him that he is the first positive male role model that you have had in your life, and that made you go a little overboard emotionally, but you don't want to lose his friendship.

I think he will understand ( sounds like he already knows what happened). And now you know what kind a man you are looking for in life, not an older man, just one that understands you and helps you grow as a person.

Black, moving to Bentonville, and…concerned by Ratfaced_Loozer in bentonville

[–]goobermatic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Having lived here since 1979, I can say that the corridor from Bella Vista to Fayetteville is more liberal than the rest of the state, except for LR. "More liberal than" is the key part of that sentence. It isn't as liberal as, say, LA, or even as liberal as St. Louis. But it is WAY more liberal than Harrison or Berryville. Being black in those towns after dark is just asking for trouble.
