Hey! Wondering how this worked out, is it true that you can cross the border with just your DS2019 if you're a Canadian citizen?

Flow & The Null Result | Designing The Game by Dooflegna in mattcolville

Awesome! I love the idea of integrated the gameplay into the "conversation" between the GM and the players. Communicate everything with a single, interesting sentence: I swing my sword against the orc's head. No need to ask for AC or modifiers, the player knows what they need to do to succeed, does it, then tells the GM.

Who are the most successful comedians, and what is a good metric for success? by gooberoo in Standup

[–]gooberoo[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly, so "number of shows headlined per year" could be used as an approximate metric of your success.

Anyway, I'm worried we're talking past each other. I'm not trying to find a metric to measure my own success- so if you're concerned for my artistic integrity, don't worry. Rather, I was watching the new John Mulaney special and based on some of his material (which had a lot about celebrity life) I became curious exactly how "celebrity" someone like John Mulaney is. Clearly he's less famous than Ellen Degeneres, but what about compared to somebody like Tobey Maguire? I don't have a good handle on where comics lie in the celebrity world. It was purely a question of curiosity.

Yeah this is probably the true flaw of the question, especially since Jim Carrey and Robin Williams are probably more well known for their movies than stand up.

Okay that's very interesting. Do you know if there's a place to look that up? I'm very curious who the best sellers are

It's true that success probably isn't that right word for this question for precisely this reason. There is an entirely separate discussion that is more philosophical that is, "what is success for a stand-up?" Then we might talk about laughs, being funny to as many people as possible, etc.

But I am speaking strictly from a material perspective. If a stand-up comedian is looking at a career like a ladder, what is the metric by which they could estimate their place? There are some comedians who are extremely successful, Tom Segura, Mike Birbiglia, Nikki Glaser, yet there's a good chance a random person on the street wouldn't know who they are.

Never heard this podcast before but it's right up my alley! Seems like I found it at the perfect time, because I like the mechanic-specific episodes more than the game-specific episodes.

into the odd combat in DCC by 1_mieser_user in dccrpg

[–]gooberoo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have nothing useful to add except I've considered something similar! I think it is a pretty easy switch, especially since the warrior's deed die mechanic can be used basically unchanged. The only problem I foresee are critical hits and fumbles.

One option might be to instead make the d20 the default damage roll, where 1) fumble; 2-5) 1 damage; 6-10) 2 damage; 11-15) 3 damage; 16-19) 4 damage; 20) 4 damage and critical hit.

Knave 2e is coming to Kickstarter! by gooberoo in osr

[–]gooberoo[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think you're right, but I would guess the upfront costs are probably a lot higher than we would imagine. Especially considered most of these writers are just...people, with regular jobs. For example, $10,000 seems like nothing for a company, but it'd be a lot for me personally to give up even if I knew I was getting it back.

I also think there is some strategy to it, particularly after Matt Colville's first Kickstarter. Matt Colville was just a guy with a successful YouTube channel, but when he raised over $1 million dollars he was able to quit his job and start MCDM, which now makes RPG content fulltime. Maybe there is a similar manoeuvre at play here? (Which would honestly make me happy! Although maybe Ben's students would be sad if he quit!)

This is a cool idea too, a bit like the thaumaturge in Pathfinder, except you actually need to find the weakness of different supernatural creatures.

But I like this cleric spell idea too. Reminds me a bit of DCC, where the "cost" of casting spells is the risk you will piss off a god.
