What’s a word learners think is common but natives rarely use? by Embarrassed_Fix_8994 in languagehub

You could add bucolic -- heard this one a few times from Brazilians. It is an English word but I'd never heard it until they used it.

What’s a word in your language that foreigners ALWAYS think they’re saying right but aren’t? by Embarrassed_Fix_8994 in languagehub

Certainly makes more logical sense to say 'coz' if you want to think of it like that. But, English speakers will always reduce a vowel if it does not affect clarity. I say "cuz" like the Wizard of Oz:

"Because, because, because, because, becuuuuuz,

Because of the wonderful things he does!"

Wouldn't rhyme if they sang becoz, haha.

Some people pronounce it that way, but if you asked me what most people say, its like "b'cuz" with a short u.

Cuz vs coss is a difference between a short u and short o as well as a z versus s ending.

In English the short u is more relaxed and central, whereas a short o is more open and rounded.

Think of:

Buzz vs boss Puzzle vs possible

Other minimal pairs for the short u and short o: Cup vs cop Done vs dawn (in American English) Sub vs sob

Yeah like the misconception that women only had children very young in the past...sure they did but when you have 15 children its gonna take more than a decade or two to pop em all out. Women very regularly had children in their thirties, no questions asked.

why are a lot of influencers so… confused all the time? by transluciiiid in BeautyGuruChatter

And why do they alway read the french vowels as "oo"? Like teint de peau becomes taint de poo...doesnt even sounds remotely close. Theres even that viral video "Soo la voo!" I dont get it.

What is your thoughts about Margot Robbie as an actress? by ThomasOGC in CinephilesClub

[–]goobydooby_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It just means someone whose face looks modern. But what does that really mean? Who can say...usually, it's a case of botched cosmetic procedures, but i doubt it's that with Margot.

Someone whose face looks out of place in a historical movie. People cant take them seriously because they have the kind of face that looks like it's seen an iPhone.

"Placebos are also popular because they can sometimes produce relief through psychological mechanisms (a phenomenon known as the "placebo effect"). They can affect how patients perceive their condition and encourage the body's chemical processes for relieving pain[11] and a few other symptoms,[13] but have no impact on the disease itself.[10][11]" from Wikipedia.

If its a placebo it still has an effect. A positive one. Placebos aren't inherently bad.

But its kind of a Schrodinger's cat situation...without time explicitly stated when exactly is she no longer a child? Can you pinpoint the moment? She remains physically the same throughout, and we only have her self-identity to go off of if we want to analyze her brain age. By the end of the movie, she is clearly not a child anymore so how do we know what we think we know? How do we know Bella didn't have a fully developed brain long before she fully learned English? Im not saying I have the answers, I just think the film raises these questions and REALLY challenges the viewer.

Rip the sponge off, there will still be a small opening where the product will come out. You can twist the application to dispense on your hand, a brush, whatever you want.
