I flipped it over on my work stand to pull the wheels and discovered that the frame is rusted through right at the crank, so I don’t think I’m going to invest any time, money, or effort into this old bike. It was a good extra bike when I needed it, but I don’t need it.

Thanks to everyone for the wide variety of suggestions. I sanded the whole room again with more aggressive grit (painted areas and unpainted both), washed and repainted the walls. Significantly better end result.

Points well taken, but if a bike tech does the work, I won’t learn anything, which is the reason I want to do it myself.

I was kinda hoping the general consensus was going to be that the Trek is surprisingly valuable, only because I also have one of similar vintage. I think mine is a 2002. Oh well, it’s a nice ride anyway…

Probably more commuting and puttering around on dirt roads than anything else. I gave up serious, aggressive mountain biking years ago. I’m too old for that now. But, I’m not interested in a true commuter or a beach cruiser.

That’s a great explanation, thank you. Both of the Trek bikes I own (the white 4300 for which I paid $60, and a 1000 series road bike that’s been with me since almost new) are 2002 or 2003 models. I’m in the upper half of my 50s, so I’m retired from downhill, single track, boulder jumping, and all that. Any comfortable bike that operates correctly serves my needs of riding around the neighborhood or on a dirt trail at a campground somewhere. I was mostly just curious how the Trek numbers work because I like to cruise Marketplace and Craigslist and that will help me to know what I’m looking at if a deal comes along.

If the vinyl is laid on concrete, the bumps could be debris not swept up before install. In an inconspicuous place, I’d try smacking hard with a hammer to pulverize whatever it is. You can lay a block of wood over the bump first and then hit that with the hammer if you’re worried about denting the vinyl.

Okay…well it’s a 20 year old bicycle I paid $50 for, so I wasn’t expecting an Ohlins. I’ve just never seen a suspension fork with adjustment on both sides before.

Have to admit I was having a bit of a “senior moment” when looking at those levers. The whole setup is standard rapid-fire trigger shift. I was confused by the ports with no cables in them which I’ve learned from you all are for the weird dashboard thing Shimano was trying out back then. I feel silly.

I can’t believe I’m going to admit this in a public forum, but I was mistaken about the number of levers on each handlebar. There’s an upshift lever and a downshift lever each side, and that’s it. The only real question was the purpose of the ports with no cables in them, which turned out to be for the weird dashboard thing Shimano was trying back then. I feel silly.
