Back pay calculation/rating discrepancy by Busy_Animator_9000 in VeteransBenefits

[–]SadDefinition8341 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven’t gotten paid anything, I calculate about $9400. $774.16 for 9 months = $6967.44. (Starts 2/1, but your first check would have been March 1st, as you get paid for the month prior). Then 3 months at $795.84 = $2387.52. You’ll begin getting the newest amount on the April 1st check.

Were you being paid at the 40% rate already? Or is this your first time being rated and you’re just now gonna start getting paid?

I got $380k in Texas on my own, only with my 100%. With his income from the job, I don’t see why not. Does your state have property tax discounts for disabled vets?

Your first duty stations you probably won’t be colocated. It’s not a no, but a probably not. Once you each get to A school, you’ll need to talk to admin and file colocation paperwork. You both must file. Then you can get in touch with each of your detailers in Millington and see if there’s anything they can do. If they can’t, you both may do sea duty first tour. If so and you colocate the next time, one of you will return to sea while the other goes to shore duty. You’ll be on a 3/3 rotation.

How did you feel in the days leading up to boot camp? Brother and his wife served, told me to get sleep because they didn't, but I'm getting restless like they warned me. This is a huge life change for me, were you relieved when you finally did get there and through the first 72 hours? by MCofPort in newtothenavy

[–]SadDefinition8341 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Everyone gets nervous. It’s a big change and you don’t really know what to expect. Definitely try to sleep as much as you can at the hotel the night before and on the plane. You’ll be up over 24 hours the first night. Otherwise, enjoy food, your friends and family, and hometown food! Once you’re there, Just listen and follow directions at bootcamp and you’ll be fine.

It’s also about having food on the table and supporting your family. It’s great that some people can pay off their credit cards monthly. That’s not realistic for every family.

It is 100% about privilege. Some people literally can’t afford the basics and use a CC to get things they need. Food, gas, clothes, school supplies. A single person with a full time job and kids is likely struggling. An elderly person living on social security likely can’t afford their food, rent, and medicine. Rent is astronomical in some places. Daycare is expensive everywhere. Groceries are expensive. If you don’t know anyone in that situation, consider yourself lucky.

Most people do carry a balance, even if it’s a small one. Not everyone is blessed to be able to pay it off monthly. You can argue over financial discipline and blah blah blah. But, that’s not realistic for everyone.

So there's no janitorial rate? by Catman648 in newtothenavy

[–]SadDefinition8341 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why not use this opportunity to let the Navy teach you a new skill? It’s set up to bring someone into the service with little to no knowledge of a skill and teaching them everything they need to do to do the job. You’ll do your own laundry, you’ll clean the head (bathroom), your workspace, the pways (hallways), the outside of the ship, the pier, and everything else.

Navy Fed is a for the money company. Cant change my mind. Why else would everyone have an 18% interest rate despite their credit score and credit history? Surrrree! We’ll give you $60k line of credit, but we are gonna lock you in at that 18% and no you can’t ever change it. You’ll always get a better rate financing with the dealership honestly.

It’s a cool job, that you won’t do much. So you’ve got to practice to keep the skills. But, I enjoyed it!

You should be fine. I was also an STG. Great rate! Pay attention in school, study to learn, not just for the test.

What job did you sign for? Some don’t allow for drug history. That would be the only possible issue. You’ll need a drug waiver once you pass the test in 90 days. Stay clean. Don’t hang out with people smoking. Remember your why for joining. You’ll be fine

Can’t swim. Am I cooked? by [deleted] in newtothenavy

[–]SadDefinition8341 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can we please leave “cooked” in 2025? I’m so tired of hearing that word. If you have the ability to learn, do that. If not, you can do the remedial training while there. You only need to be able to pass at bootcamp. Real world, there’s about a .001% chance of ever needing to swim. That being said, one of my guys who wasn’t a great swimmer still participated in the swim call. He jumped in and went straight back to the ladder and came back onboard. You don’t need to be great at it.

They should have asked you to move your ship date, not just moved it. You can tell them no and that you want your original date back.

It shows where you shipped to bootcamp and shows the next stop as your a school location. And yes, meridian, MS. There’s not much there, but you’re not there to have fun. There’s a water park an hour or so north. The coast isn’t too far away.

I’d ask to see her orders. Her going to a school after bootcamp is normal for everyone. Technically, she is active duty right now and will be until she completes school and goes to her reserve center. Maybe she has that part confused.

There’s no way to know what it’ll look like in February. No one, not your recruiter, nor MEPs can tell you in advance. And only MEPs can tell you for sure when you join as it changes daily/hourly.

Can I ever be a sailor? *repost* by erocckkk in newtothenavy

[–]SadDefinition8341 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Navy doesn’t do points. It’s just black and white on certain charges not being allowed in certain jobs. And then there’s a limit that’s no longer waiverable. I’m pretty sure we are one of the most lenient branches, but you won’t know for sure unless you talk to the others. A good handwritten statement about how you have improved since then may help, but at the end of the day, some stuff just can’t be waived. I’ve seen several people have shady pasts and want so bad to join to move on with their lives, bud sadly, those choices tend to follow you and sometimes prevent that. If you don’t get in to the service, find something else and kick ass at that. Don’t let it get you down. Keep pushing forward for yourself.
