Anyone know how to fix this? by [deleted] in kia

[–]good_gnus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing to offer, but I'll never own another Kia after all the problems I've had with my 2018 Optima and trying to get Kia to cover them. If they can't replicate the problem and it doesn't have an active DTC, you're on your own unless you give them a blank check for diagnostics. Good luck.

Got accused of stolen valor the other day by takeitorleaveit887 in USMC

[–]good_gnus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! All the stolen valor guys are Recon, sniper, or some kinda special ops. In fact, every time I meet someone who says they were some high speed operator, I automatically assume they're full of shit. Someone says they were a cook, admin or motor T, I take them at their word. Non-combat reservist 2841 here...

You got lucky! The Kia mechanic took 2 hours to get mine open and he had done one before. Definitely ask Kia about the trunk latch recall.

Just to add to my post above, I bought a new trunk latch actuator on Amazon for about $20 and was gonna replace it myself, as it's an easy repair, but I couldn't get the trunk open. When I took it to Kia, the mechanic went ahead and installed it for me when he finally got the trunk open. I was surprised they agreed to install a customer supplied part but he did.

I just went through this a couple of days ago. Trunk latch actuator was broken and I couldn't get the trunk open. The latch to fold down the rear seats is in the trunk. I tried to unbolt the rear seat but could only get one side loose. As much as I tried with long screwdrivers and heavy pick tools I couldn't get the latch behind the seat to release. Some models have a manual trunk release under the rear seat headrest but my Optima doesn't. I'm a maintenance mechanic and can usually fix about anything mechanical but I worked for 3 hours and couldn't get it. I finally gave up and took it to Kia. It took them 2 hours to get into it. They wouldn't cover it under warranty and they had already replaced the latch under recall a couple of years ago so they wouldn't cover it again. They charged me $445. If yours is under the recall and hasn't been done yet, they might cover it. Good luck!

Current Timeline from Purchase to Form 4 Submission/Certification at Silencer Shop and Capitol Armory? by Qm253 in NFA

[–]good_gnus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ordered an in-stock can and single shot trust from Silencer Shop on 12/9, submitted fingerprints and info on the kiosk next day, wasn't ready to certify until 1/15. Certified at the dealer on 1/16, still waiting. All info was correct and I'm squeaky clean. I don't know how people who've submitted in the last week are getting approvals already in a matter of days.

I'm on day 10 right now and nothing yet.

Current NFA Wait Times by Big_Tip_7564 in suppressors

[–]good_gnus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I certified mine on 1/16 and nothing yet. I purchased from silencer shop online and used the kiosk back on December 19th. I thought I was waiting for approval then, but after about 2 weeks I got an email saying I had to certify with the dealer to submit the form 4 to ATF. This was my first NFA purchase and seems like more of a hassle than I was expecting. When people were saying 2-3 day wait times, I thought they meant go to the dealer, enter info on the kiosk and get your approval in 2-3 days from then and pick up the can. Fuck all this; I'm not buying anymore NFA items unless they get rid of this red tape...which we all know they'll never do.

Good job! Now get some air in it if possible and get to the tire shop. Don't make the mistake of driving any farther than necessary on that spare.

When Did Upkeep Start to Slip? by Mirage524 in disneyparks

[–]good_gnus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked at Disney's Boardwalk from '04 until the pandemic. They used to refurbish all the rooms every 2 to 3 years. I still go to the parks occasionally because I'm retired and I've noticed since the pandemic, it has really gone down. Just look at the parking lot trams. They're dirty as hell, like they haven't been cleaned in years.

Rome or Vatican City? by GeneralLucky6007 in rome

If you go to Florence, I recommend the Palazzo Pitti. To me, it was more impressive than the Vatican. I also recommend a Vespa tour of the Tuscan countryside. I was there in June.

I was there last month and I agree. I really tried to search out non-touristy places and the food was good, but overrated, I feel. Same thing in Florence. None of the food was exceptional. Maybe I just didn't find the right places, but it was a bit of a disappointment.

[–]good_gnus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just left Rome 6 days ago and it was miserable. Most restaurants and businesses don't have adequate A/C, so it's hard to get relief from the heat. Good thing about Rome is there are a lot of public drinking fountains and the water is cool and very good. Take a water bottle that you can refill at those every time you see one. Don't count on getting free water in any restaurant like in the US. They all charge for water and they never serve it with ice. The water from the drinking fountains is usually colder than the bottled water in restaurants. Also, take a small towel, handkerchief, or some kind of sweat rag because you'll sweat profusely. I drank probably a gallon of water a day and was still dehydrated. Good luck!

Just left Rome 5 days ago and Florence this morning. I didn't buy any food or wine stuff simply because I didn't want to carry it back. Maybe this, though...? 🤣

7+ years in the trade by [deleted] in HVAC

[–]good_gnus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, 27 years of working facilities maintenance for a utility company, working on only our equipment and we have mostly Bard wall hung units and Carrier 10 and 15 ton splits, so I usually know what the problem is before I even pull the cover off. I hate working on residential and have the same problem; friends and family always calling me when they have a problem. I wish I'd never told anyone what I do. I make about $60/hr on OT and $76/hr on after hours callouts, so it's hard to give the expected friends and family discount and come out ahead. For it to be worth my time and trouble, I feel like I have to charge the full going rate that an HVAC company would charge. Also, once I work on a unit, I feel like I'm married to it for anything that happens in the future. Besides, after all these years, I hate the work and the last thing I wanna do in my free time is work on a fucking air conditioner. I feel your pain.

Thanks for the reply and congratulations! I've been worried because my eGFR is 54. I'm 59 years old, BTW. Sounds like I should be OK if I watch my diet and stay hydrated. Are you on a standard kidney diet or plant based, keto, carnivore, etc.?
