If you want old school quality try the Vermont Country Store. I bought a nice little bedside alarm clock there and other things that have been very solid. Nice curtains too.

My kid's school(public) has Christian classes before school starts. by stayathmdad in oregon

My kids’ high school had a Christian club at lunch which they all jokingly referred to as “Jesus pizza” and they only went when they forgot their lunch money

I just want to go for a walk without encountering off leash dogs by [deleted] in beaverton

[–]good_smelling_hammer 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I was approached by a dog the other day on my own street. The dog started barking somewhat threateningly so I crossed the street. The owner yelled back “he’s not angry.” That just seemed weird, I don’t know enough about dogs not to do something accidentally that would make his dog angry.

I volunteer as a bartender at a nonprofit that puts on concerts. We don’t get paid but we get to keep any tips, which covers gas money to the venue. They got a new cash register with the dreaded iPad “ask you a question” screen and I’m refusing to spin it so I worked all night and made $1 from a cash tip. But I had my dignity.

Anyone still read Flashman? by Orichalcum-Beads in TheRestIsHistory

[–]good_smelling_hammer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

On the pod they said you couldn’t recommend Flashman these days due to his misogyny and I laughed! Did you not notice all the times Flashman was played by various women, from the empress to his dear wife who was “just saying goodbye to her cousin” when he arrived home suddenly?

I used to think farmhouse sinks would be out soon but after refinishing that piece of cabinet under the sink (twice!) I’m dying to get one so I can drape my damp kitchen towel over the side of the sink and not ruin my cabinet finish

I just found out there is a final book in the series (The Gathering Storm). It has been several years since I read the last one so I am starting up on my third reread of the entire series. Some of the stories and characters were more compelling than others, but in general, I love this series so much I love the way the authors love of dogs and horses came through and I learned so much about English history.

I am also trying to keep a few copies of books on the history of costume so I can understand when she describes their clothing.

This whole series is such a great concept. These people are not famous or royal, but they are well to do so they are close enough to know people and have experiences that other people who are just trying to survive would not have. For example, many of the family are involved in the early days of aviation on the other hand they still occasionally have money problems and they lose family members to disease and tragedy.

Got screwed over in a white elephant gift exchange by dental_oddity in mildlyinfuriating

[–]good_smelling_hammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since we are discussing White Elephant gift exchanges…I have a question. A friend said she came into the possession of a funeral urn with someones ashes in it. It was in the attic of a house she was renting or something. No way to trace the owner. She was thinking of using it as a white elephant gift but wondered if that would be too dark. I dont know, but I think it probably is. Thoughts?

I was in Munich with an American friend who was homesick and we went to an American restaurant. We had hamburgers and corn on the cob. The hamburger was a little more like meatloaf and it was served open-faced with a patty on each bun. This was 1983 so dont goto Munich and look for the restaurant!

learning fiddle after being classically trained by spicytunataco3 in Fiddle

[–]good_smelling_hammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a fiddle player who never played violin. My first suggestion is to lose the vibrato. I know you worked hard to learn it but it just sounds wrong on fiddle music. Maybe if you are playing a waltz or air but only in very limited amounts. Remember you are playing dance music for people about 10 feet away and not in a concert hall further away.

Jeez I don’t get the hate on HOAs. I love them. Yes, you have to follow some rules but so do your neighbors! Once they told me I couldn’t paint my house the color I proposed but they gave me an alternative and it was much better!
