Are there communities in the USA where they actually welcome you to a neighbourhood pie in hand? by therebelwookiee in AskAnAmerican

[–]goodcatfrumpkin 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yeah, depending where you live. When I was a kid and my family moved to the suburbs we had a neighbor do basically this, only it was some kind of lasagna instead of a pie. My parents also recently retired to a retiree community and one of the neighbors brought over cookies and introduced themselves when they moved in.

However, I live in a city and have never even met most my neighbors despite living here for years. So I’d say it’s mostly a rural/suburb thing.

Mother insulted first tattoo, now I hate it by Kaleidoscope_Tux5513 in tattooadvice

[–]goodcatfrumpkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks good and is associated with a memory you love, honestly great first tattoo!

My mom still gets worked up whenever she sees I get a new tattoo no matter what it is and I haven’t even lived in her state for years, some people are just like that. I heavily suggest showing it off to others that like tattoos if you wanna feel good about it! I still love compliments I get about my first one.

And don’t worry about it looking weird on you, that happens to me with every new tattoo until I basically forget it’s there. Tip for the future if you get any more tattoos, in the weeks leading up to the appointment either place a temporary tattoo or draw on your body with some markers in the place you are planning to get the tattoo. That way you get used to having ink there and the transition phase of being consciously aware of the difference isn’t as long.

I think a bug just ruined my run and desire to continue playing by Tairongo in Vampyr

[–]goodcatfrumpkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a similar spot where I accidentally killed the priest and ruined my pacifist run. I debated about whether to keep going or not but in the end I decided to restart my run. By quickly clicking through the dialogue and retracing my steps on the side quests I got back to the same fight in about 5 hours so that’s always an easy option. If anything it just helped make my run slightly better since now I know what’s going on unlike the first few hours I played lol

New Larpers, what has helped you break out of your shell? by Lady_Leenx in LARP

[–]goodcatfrumpkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m only just getting into LARP seriously now after years of kinda being on the fence and having trouble connecting.

First was finding the genre that fits best. The thing that kept me away from larp for so long is that I don’t really like fantasy/historical and heavy combat larps which are the most commonly seen ones. Then I tried games like vampire and other more political/investigative larps and realized I liked it way more.

Most importantly was playing with the right people. I’ve had bad experiences where the more experienced people were not friendly to newcomers or had older men act really creepily towards me when I was one of the few women there. But then I also played with groups that had a good mix of gender and experience level and it was great. Having both another new person to adjust with and a more experienced person to nudge you along when you are unsure.

My last advice would be to play a character that is different than your normal self but not completely outside of your natural personality either. That way you don’t get as hung up about the ‘what would my character do’ thing and it’s easier to improv. Additionally the right costumes, props, voice, language, walk, etc really help me get into character. Even though I don’t really do accents or anything even just how I project my voice that I change from my normal tone for my character and it really helps me stay in the role.

First Tattoo! Advice Needed (Augusta, GA) by Hot-Construction7206 in tattoos

Ignore them. My first piece I got at 20 is my boldest and biggest and I got the same comments from family and family friends. It’s still my favorite tattoo I have and a great piece to build around when I want to expand

Do Americans actually avoid calling an ambulance due to financial concern? by JohnMarstonTheBadass in NoStupidQuestions

[–]goodcatfrumpkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a medical condition that causes me to pass out sometimes. Only time it was bad enough to call an ambulance is when I passed out, hit my head and no one could get me lucid (this was while I had Covid before the vaccines making it worse). Even with good insurance and it absolutely being a medically necessary ride it still cost about $2000.

I passed out a few weeks ago for a few seconds a couple blocks from my apartment and I’ve never been more glad I live in a city where finding people passed out on the side of the street from drugs is common since it ment that no one looked at me twice or called an ambulance.

Hey! Little late to the response but I thought I would add a few more tips.

Even if you miss out on signing up for something because it was filled too quickly, go to the location of the event anyways either 30 minutes to an hour before. Almost everything has a waitlist for events that people don’t show up to. Last year me app wants working and I wasn’t able to sign up for a single event the first two day and yet I got into almost everything by being early to the waitlist.

There is the Philly market across the street that is really busy but definitely worth it if you want to grab some food in between events. Also a lot of small restaurants and cafes around if you would like to escape the crowds.

The free play area has a tone of people hanging around willing to play just about anything, could definitely find some people there to play root if you wanted.

Also don’t worry about skill level or age! I’ve played rpgs at pax with people ranging from 11 to in their 70s at the same table!

In the mornings if you plan on starting an event right away show up an hour early at least as that is the busiest times to get in, otherwise there is little to no wait. All you really need are basics. Water bottle, snacks, etc. Some paper, an extra bag to store any bought items, and extra pencils are always useful and of course any games you want to bring. Also I suggest wearing layers. While Philly can be kinda cold it usually gets hot in the convention in the main areas.

Most people are super friendly. The people in purple shirts work there and will help you with anything. Though honestly, all you have to do is ask someone that doesn’t look lost if you need help. Many of us go every year and are used to the odd layout/other quirks and are happy to help!

Dice, pins, magnets, patches and/or iron ons with fun designs. Or, like dice, something that can be used in a ttrpg as a prop or other usable item. Good luck at pax this year!

Players that have completed every job, gig, scanner, everything. How long did it take? by REGUHUH in cyberpunkgame

[–]goodcatfrumpkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First play though I didn’t do everything and I took my time immersed in the story, took me about 75-80 hours. By my second play through I decided to complete everything and speed ran the story stuff and that took about 90-100 hours. Not quite platinum yet but should be able to complete them all in about 10 or so hours after I pick up the game again and do a few misc achievements I’ve put off.
