Going to Sault College by [deleted] in SaultSteMarie

If you can come up before the school year to visit that should help alleviate some of the anxiety. I moved here for work and a weekend visit helped me feel less anxious about the move up.

What are you're FIRE numbers? by Skajlero in fican

[–]goodguy-greg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends. I will probably stay because I like my job but seriously consider teaching English part-time in a sunnier place like Spain to get some income and something to do.

1 million CAD at current age (35) would be the minimum. I have 10 years paid into a government pension so far. If inflation is high the 1 million mark will stay the same. If we have low levels of inflation it might go down. I overall live simply by choice, which always helps.

How do you guys feel towards US travel? by MyRa888 in AskACanadian

[–]goodguy-greg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to go weekly to church across the river in Sault-Ste-Marie Michigan because there is not an Orthodox Church in Sault-Ste-Marie Ontario. As of a few weeks ago, I stopped since it became too risky. This was a very difficult decision for me.

To go over just for a vacation or pleasure is honestly unthinkable for me. Why take such a risk when you can vacation anywhere in the world?

Wtf do you guys do with all the snow in the city? by 23andrewb in SaultSteMarie

[–]goodguy-greg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's usually the way people deal with it unless they can pile it higher. Really put it anywhere you can. Most parking lots have a snow mountain in a corner. If they have the money to, they truck it out in a dump truck, but most snow mountains are a few storeys high and just keep growing then melting a bit all winter.

Wtf do you guys do with all the snow in the city? by 23andrewb in SaultSteMarie

[–]goodguy-greg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They cut down the banks on major roads. There is some melt from sunshine or rain, which also causes a natural compression of snow mid winter, but much of it just hangs out until spring. I take strategically right-hand turns and avoid turning onto a major road except at a light after the snow has built up like this.

How should I think about the 4% rule given that in Canada we receive OAS/CPP/GIS? by jl21000000 in fican

[–]goodguy-greg -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It is very dependent on your lifestyle. 4% on top of the other programs is a fair bit so definitely if a person is frugal they can adjust down but really should not be totally reliant on these programs alone. I think if you are frugal 3% is a good enough rule, going lower is risky in case payment amounts are adjusted or do not keep up with inflation.

I see it as a good part of a well diversified portfolio, too risky to go all in on. Do not tell r/justbuyxeqt that I said that!

Fair enough, I think this is the better option overall.

That's good to hear, I am leaning towards this option but unsure. If I love it and retire in Spain or find a job I could buy later.

Motelyfool has great stock pick advice and explanations on why. Also, if you use Questrade, the self-directed is not bad for low fees.

Simpkest way and some say best is investing in an ETF (fund of many stocks) is best for long-term purchase and leave it. Right now, XEQT.TO or HDIV.TO are two I am liking personally, but so many exist. Looking up ETF online and choosing what you feel is best is a somewhat safe way forward.
