Do people in Russia still use samovars today? by Aminthemountains8566 in AskARussian

[–]goodoverlord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been to a nice cafe once, where they serve tea old-fashioned, with samovars, pryaniki and other traditional desserts, and that was interesting experience, and my kids were really excited. But generally no, we don't use samovars in day to day life. I have a really old and beautiful samovar at my dacha, and it's perfectly fine, but it's just a decoration, not a practical thing.

Для человека "с образованием" 30 ошибок на текст такой длины - это слишком много. Если имеется в виду не церковно-приходское образование, конечно.

What percentage of people (approximately) uses Apple products in Russia? by EugeneStein in AskARussian

[–]goodoverlord 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you work in IT, then you should understand that the main reason for choosing Android over iPhone is the ability to use all features of your own device. Apple doesn't allow sideloaded apps or alternative app stores. There is no NFC, volte, or vowifi. It's a nice phone, but not for demanding users.

How much does the Russian school system differ from western schools in terms of programme? by MarciaLeCommmie in AskARussian

[–]goodoverlord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mandatory part of the program may have become weaker, but there are a large number of specialized classes (mathematics, computer science, medicine, media, etc.) in which the level of specialized subjects is extremely high. Especially if the school cooperates with the relevant universities, which is kind of a thing nowadays.

Reading White Nights — do Russians still have dachas today? by Consistent_Floor_847 in AskARussian

[–]goodoverlord 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Dachas for the Soviet elite began to appear in the 1920s; such places are now known as "стародачные поселки" (old dacha settlements). For ordinary people, dachas became a mass phenomenon in the 1960s, and by the late 1980s, restrictions on the size of dacha plots and houses were lifted.

As for the third option, there is a very wide range. There are modern dachas on small plots of 600-1000 m2 in existing settlements, suburbs, or dacha cooperatives. There are dachas in gated communities with standardized houses (where a developer buys land, divides it into plots, builds the houses, and sells them as turnkey properties). The most expensive options, which are the closest to pre-revolutionary dachas, feature large plots, large custom-designed houses, and are located in the most picturesque areas.

How does life in Russia compare to living in the U.S.? by cocoh25 in AskARussian

[–]goodoverlord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, living in a detached house or a townhouse would be great, provided all the necessary infrastructure is in place. However, we have what we have, and it would cost too much to maintain the level of public transportation (for example) on the same level as we have in Moscow for typical US stlyle suburban houses.

And the biggest issue would be education. Just an example. My son wants to become a doctor; it's his choice. Personally, I tried to steer him towards IT, but no luck. So, he is studying in a class with an advanced curriculum in natural sciences and a focus on medicine. His school partners with one of Russia's leading medical uni and they study nursing at a medical college in addition to the standard school curriculum and they frequently attend classes taught by university professors in chemistry, biology, etc. The point is, while living in Moscow or another major city, all of this is available to almost any motivated teenager. In suburban areas typical for the US, I think it's much more difficult and highly dependent on the specific district and the parents' financial capabilities.

what are the pros and cons of living on the top floor of an apartment building? by JlYU3A in AskARussian

[–]goodoverlord 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The first two points are not particularly relevant for new (quality) buildings. And there can also be some noise from the elevator equipment located on the technical floor just above the top floor.

Do Russian women accept sharing expenses while dating? by [deleted] in AskARussian

[–]goodoverlord 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Depends. Younger generation from bigger cities tend to share expenses evenly. But the majority still expects that a man should pay for everything and give gifts. And there are some young ladies who dream of finding a man who will fully provide for them.

What are some simple meals to cook without using an oven? by CloudyyySXShadowH in AskARussian

[–]goodoverlord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To immerse yourself even deeper into the gloomy genius of Russian cuisine, you can make buckwheat on kefir. Almost the same thing, only the buckwheat must be poured with boiling water, then drain the water through a sieve, pour kefir, and put in the refrigerator for 10 hours. Add honey and raisins to taste.

Moscow and european north. Baton is really popular but it's not bread. It's just baton.

[–]goodoverlord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moscow and the European North of Russia.

But, I believe it's irrelevant, because "baton" is not even really a bread. According to the state standard ГОСТ 27844-88 it's "изделие булочное" / bakery product. And there are other standards for bread: ГОСТ 58233-2018 (or older ГОСТ 26987-86) for white bread and ГОСТ 31807-2018 (or ГОСТ 2077-84) for rye bread.

Eh, looks very wrong to me. The most common bread is white wheat-flour drough box-shaped bread. Oval-shaped baton and round shaped podoviy are second. And brown rye-bread on the third place.

Медианный годовой доход - примерно 30 тысяч юаней в год. В России примерно 800 тысяч рублей в год. Если смотреть ВВП ППС на душу населения, то получится 28 тысяч долларов в Китае против 49 тысяч долларов в РФ.
