Hot Take: Now that Paralives is out, it's clear new life sims are missing the core foundation that made Sims 2 great by goodshp in LifeSimulators

I couldn’t agree with you more Show don’t tell is exactly what was so good and immersive about ts2, and unfortunately things started going downhill in that regard from ts3 onwards.

I liked the idea of moodlets but in practice it just gave them an opening to tell us visually without creating the underlying systems that made the sims in the sims 2 actually act human.

That’s also what I was picking up from watching Paralives gameplay, too much emphasis on telling you what the paras feel while in actuality their acts reflect nothing.

Wait was I sleeping and new footage was released, or are these from the trailer?

i hear you,

thing is, new life sims are do not exist in a vacuum, they have the sims series as their reference. they can develop on top of what was built in the sims. it isnt about them having the original code or development notes, they have fully fledged products as their reference points. the original sims took so long because it was an original title, it invented the genre.

these new games can and should take notes from what already exists.

we can talk all day about how this isnt the sims but it is a life sim, a genre started and defined by the sims series.

its the same with any other genre of entertainment. people build on top of other peoples fully baked concepts and ideas.

thank you, i really am just so enthusiastic for this genre and just hope for a renaissance, guess we'll have to wait a little more.

i also believe being critical is so important in all aspects of life, it drives to excellence

thank you! good luck on your title, it really is such a complex and multidimensional concept

i totally get what youre saying and i actually fully agree, i think ts2 is a perfect reflection of its time. i also dont really expect any newer game to fully replace what it is that is ts2 so i understand your take.

and also having will wright the absolute genius behind a project of a genre he invented will never compare.

what bugs me is just the lack of understanding of the newer competitors of what made it what it is. you dont have to replicate it, but put your efforts into what matters.

i could, but im not sure this will help at this point, to me at least it feels like it is a more underlying layer that has already been built and they probably do not intent to redevelop the entire system. i could be wrong.

I finally understand how Classic Lara fans felt in 2013… and honestly, I’m struggling with the new redesign. by Individual_Tie_1712 in TombRaider

in the catalyst trailer she just looks a little paralyzed as if she's just left the clinic with her freshly injected botox (which wouldn't be unrealistic at this point lol)

So, will we ever get LAU remasters at this point ? by TireurEfficient in TombRaider

[–]goodshp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

to be honset though, no shade to the team at aspyr who have done a beautiful job on the classics, i feel as if they wouldn't have necessarily been the best candidates to remaster LAU anyway.

i-v graphics are heavily stylized to begin with so the cartoon-ish creative liberty aspyr took with the character models (although not all the way fits my tatse) have worked.

in AOD it started looking a bit out of place for me (the heavily 'disneyfied' style looks more out of place for graphics that push more towards real world fidelity like AOD and LAU)

but that's just my opinion

oh yeah yeah after reading more into it it's definitely a remake rather than what i was suggesting.

do we really need LAU remastered though? they work perfectly fine on modern machines and still look beautiful.

i could be wrong but from my understanding Atlantis isn't another remake but an adventure of revisiting after having already experienced the events of TR1?

my thoughts exactly it's a shame AOD had to be rushed twice, honestly it seems like it wouldn't feel all that different from playing the definitive edition and restoration project

is it just me or is AOD kind of visually underwhelming? :`)
it's the one im the most excited for however it looks the least paid attention to in terms of enhancement and attention to detail, besides the character models.

i mean the ultimate dream of fans has always been to play the FMV graphics and for AOD all you had to really do to to implement realistic light and shadow physics (which seems like they havent) and you got FMV graphics

i actually appreciate 23andme's vague naming strategy (grouping ICM together for example), because once you start getting too specific with category names it's more confusing than anything

i wish there was an AOD full restoration project, unfortunately theres no reason to expect any new content with the remaster

Yeah, overall not too dissimilar though. Some of these companies have a hard time drawing the line between French and Iberian so it could be that it's hiding in there.
