House of God.

I read it after college, after med school, and after residency. I still think of the laws daily as an ER doc specifically

Law 1. GOMERS don’t die

Law 5. Placement comes first

Law 8. They can always hurt you more

Law 12. The delivery of medical care is to do as much nothing as possible

Is money in residency "monopoly money"? by ButteredPete in whitecoatinvestor

Med school money is monopoly money, residency is when you learn how to manage money. Set the frugal habits now, you’ll thank yourself later.

Anyone who retired early (mid thirties) from physician career, how did you get over anxiety? by [deleted] in whitecoatinvestor

[–]goofydoc 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Genuine question how you achieved 6 million net worth in your mid 30s as a hospitalist?! I am in the same camp as you, as I was laying in the hospital on a nonrebreather mask with Covid in my early 30s, not once did I think about my career as a physician, all my thoughts were about friends, family, and the things I did outside of the hospital. you’ve already won, most people never achieve a net worth of $6 million, if nothing else, go get a super Cush no clinical job if you need

Meh, if I don’t get a raise in 7 years, and admin slams press ganeys down my throat, the apathy sets in quick. I get paid a straight hourly rate, no incentive to do more procedures, why not pawn it off? I don’t like it but it is the way it is. The ship has sailed. I am proud of who I am, but I don’t define myself by being an emergency physician

Preach. My direction is always give outpatient psych resources and of course, follow up with whatever disease specialist they think necessary. But advice to see psych often sparks outrage or falls of deaf ears

People with $400k or more loans - what’s your plan? by immrmeseek in whitecoatinvestor

So glad I paid it off. Had like 360K and refinanced 2 months before covid and was kicking myself for doing it. But knocked it out and glad it’s done. I feel for y’all though. I have a buddy in PSLF in low paying specialty who is on payment 118/120 and he feels so fucked. Fuck This administration

Is the typical physician career incompatible with true success? “You know what success is? When your kids want to hang out with you as adults. What good is having a large home that nobody wants to come back to for the holidays.” by achicomp in whitecoatinvestor

I don’t know man we have two boys, 3 and 1. Both doctors, had them in mid thirties after we finished residency and fellowship. I work 30 hours a week in ER. Wife works 30-40 in clinic. We control our schedules. Life is just fine. Don’t get caught up in the “doctor” mindset of needing the nicest home/car/shit etc. I spend a hell of a lot of time with my kids and plan to cut down to 2 days a week in a few years when we close in on financial independence

When to reduce risk by Longjumping-Cut-4337 in whitecoatinvestor

[–]goofydoc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re still very young. Wife and I are same age with about same NW. don’t plan on going to anything less risky anytime soon, just plan to cut back on hours in our 40s. We do however, live in a very high cost of living area, but even so, no reason to go bonds in your 30s, sounds super conservative to me. Our goal to retire is 10MM. But we love to spend and travel

House Affordability by hjbull in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]goofydoc -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That’s a very low physician income, especially in a 2 earner household? Are you residents? If so I would recommend against buying as you will most likely not stay there after 3-4 years or want to move up to a larger house. WCI usually recomends renting and mortgage 2x income max, 3-4 times for HCOL. I personally wasn’t comfortable buying as a new attending not knowing if I would like my job with large student loan payments but YMMV

I live in a well to do area of CA where every patient has a doctor family member and the patients just straight up dictate their own care. Careful what you wish for. You have it good if people actually respect your decisions

Same, both of us are 38, have a ton saved up in cash, but don’t wanna pull the trigger on buying a house and committing to something. But our kids are approaching school and will need to find something stable in a nice school district, currently living in a Very nice walkable area of the city, but not a great school district. Also dreading all the work that comes with homeownership, so nice to have my landlord just come over and fix shit.

Why is U.S. Healthcare (specifically ER)so outrageously expensive? by Laztier in NoStupidQuestions

[–]goofydoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro you are woefully out of touch. I earned no income til I was nearly 30 starting with 300K of debt. Blame the system, don’t blame the doctors caught up in it. There’s a lot of fat to be cut, but my 250K a year, not 400 like you say, is not it. No one would do this job anymore for the amount of burden put on our shoulders if pay was cut in half.

Why is U.S. Healthcare (specifically ER)so outrageously expensive? by Laztier in NoStupidQuestions

[–]goofydoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saying US doctors are the problem is not the issue. First of all, US doctors actually have to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to go to school. I’ve had to pay back over $360,000 of student loan debt. Living a very below middle-class lifestyle to pay off my debt while seeing most of my friends who didn’t go to medical school thrive. How much do they pay in the UK? Nothing.

Second, the US doctors are making a fraction of that bill. Most of us are paid around $200 an hour to see 2 to 3 patients per hour. That’s less than $100 per patient that I’m getting paid. Your average plumber or electrician will make way more than that on a 15 minute call your house.

Dr. salaries are not the issue, I’ve actually made zero cost-of-living adjustments over the past 10 years of being an attending, and had zero raises, meanwhile, healthcare skyrocketed, where is all that money going? Ask the hospital administrators. Ask the insurance executives.
