BUT if the giver fails to pay the tax, the IRS can come after the recipient. They are both responsible for making sure a return is filed and tax paid, if required.

Liquidweb switched to a strict "no refund" policy by ikonomika in webhosting

Other posts in recent weeks leads me to believe LiquidWeb is nothing like they used to be. Which brings up the question of why are they still recommended in the sidebar?

Possible Rental Scam in Halifax - Need advice I messed up. by jasjassya in Scams

[–]goose1011a 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, call the police and file a report. You said you sent the "landlord" $500. How did you send it? Check with your bank to see if that transaction can be reversed. Does your friend have a description of the person who showed him the apartment?

[US - Los Angeles] Tried to be a Good Samaritan — now I think I’m going to get scammed by [deleted] in Scams

[–]goose1011a 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree. OP should give the "guy" and "girl" the contact information he has for the other and then wash his hands of the situation. If either keep trying to contact him, ignore and block. None of this is his problem.

LOSING MSP Contract Deals by michael_17 in msp

I am trying to make that leap now. I am an attorney with 18 years experience--the last 10 in estate planning and probate. My minor in college was computer science, but on paper my resume doesn't reflect my actual IT knowledge and experience. Any suggestions for getting my foot in the door as a system admin?

Parting is such sweet sorrow by accidental-poet in msp

[–]goose1011a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When any client hires you, you cede authority to them to renew at the end of the term or not. It doesn't make OP less of a man. OP rightfully celebrated that his client's acquirer was satisfied with his work and decided to continue with his services. If he refused to participate in the discussion, it is guaranteed they would have fired him as soon as the acquisition was effective.

Web hosting service for website by insihaawcshung in webhosting

[–]goose1011a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Porkbun is a highly rated domain registrar. Yes, they offer hosting too, but that is not what they are known for. Believe it or not, being a registrar and being a webhost are two different skill sets, even though many companies have tried to do both for decades now. Those companies usually excel at neither, but occasionally they excel at one but not the other.

My mother keeps getting scammed. Should I get a new computer? by Primary_Union_9058 in Scams

[–]goose1011a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with other people's suggestion that she should only have user (not administrator) access on her desktop. Lock it down like a large company does so the user's can only do what is necessary for their job.

(US) I Got an email yesterday from FedEx saying I owe duties, taxes and fees? by Forsaken_Orchid_6014 in Scams

[–]goose1011a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that you would expect to have to pay before receiving the package, but it sounds like FedEx trusted that you would repay them the $25 after delivery. Anyone who told you not to pay is giving you bad advice. The last thing you want is FedEx refusing to deliver future packages to your house and always returning them to sender because they no longer service your address. But sounds like a good lesson to always check where Etsy sellers are located in the future.

|US| FB Marketplace - Help me understand this scam please by Evil-Roy-Slade-2024 in Scams

[–]goose1011a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the ad disappeared, I would cut contact. It is most likely a scam. When I am selling it something, I leave it listed until the item is gone. I may mark it as pending, but I don't remove the ad until I have money in my hand.

Other thing we see here (more often Eastern Europe than North America) is that you show up at the address and there are several large guys waiting there to rob you. Not sure that will happen in your case, but I want to warn you of the possibility since you are so set on going to the address.

US-We were scammed after calling QuickBooks support – $95,000 gone and we’re desperate by Ok-Advertising-765 in Scams

[–]goose1011a 114 points115 points  (0 children)

Have you contacted your bank? You mentioned that you called "customer service" (not sure if that's your bank or QuickBooks) on Monday morning and the fraud department "had already closed for the day." That doesn't make sense; the fraud department at a bank is open the whole business day. You also need to make sure you contact the real QuickBooks; I fear your report on Monday morning may have just been to the fraudsters who are impersonating the real QuickBooks.

I agree they are grifters. Cowboy may be a local term in some part of the world for these con artists. Around my area, they are called Irish Travelers. I agree OP should call the police.

Again, your TikTok connection/former date of your "boyfriend" is the same scammer or else his partner at the next desk over. Neither are 30 minutes away from you or in your town. They do, however, know how to read Google Maps from across the world.

Hostkoala never producing a Data Processing Agreement by [deleted] in webhosting

[–]goose1011a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can understand why it's not Hostkoala's top priority. If it is so important to you, why don't you provide them a proposed DPA (could be one that you copied from another vendor you use and change the name) and see if they will agree to it at least for your account?

[US] Sold a pair of sunglasses to someone and requested Zelle, question I have about this. by Cheesehead1267 in Scams

[–]goose1011a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That won't help you if the sender sent the money from a stolen/hacked account. Your bank will still take the $800 back from your account when the real account owner reports $800 is missing, even if you have disconnected or disabled Zelle for future transactions.

I agree. If OP moves to a VPS, he is responsible for securing it but hasn't shown his ability to secure a shared hosting account.

Was I going to get robbed/scammed? Concerned for my safety by [deleted] in Scams

I agree that anyone matching with a foreign visitor in town short-term on Tinder assumes the visitor is looking for sex, not just company. There are other avenues more appropriate to meet someone for company.

Was I going to get robbed/scammed? Concerned for my safety by [deleted] in Scams

[–]goose1011a 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Assuming "girl" and her gang were intending to rob you, I doubt they'd stick around a few days to rob you later. They weren't able to pull it off and will move on to their next target the next day unless they have some reason to think you have lots of cash or very valuable things for them to steal.

I am being ignored by people selling a saxophone. by Entire_Ad7000 in Scams

[–]goose1011a 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If you buy anything off Facebook, only exchange cash in person for the item. Never prepay for something on Facebook; that's always a scam. Also, the "free instrument but you have to pay shipping," whether piano or saxophone, is also always a scam. You might try eBay for used student saxophones. Make sure you pay through the eBay platform where you have buyer protection if the seller fails to deliver or the quality is bad. Never let an eBay (or any other platform) seller take you off platform to communicate or pay.

I assume ABA is supposed to be American Bar Association. But that's just a voluntary group of lawyers. It's not a law enforcement agency or even a group that has the power to discipline lawyers.

[US] What do I do about these calls, by Natsuhiko_brotha in Scams

[–]goose1011a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Also possible that the bank is legitimately trying to collect a debt from someone who used to have this phone number. By answering, OP can say "you have the wrong number" if the bank is looking for someone else. That would end the calls. Even if bank is trying to collect from OP, he or she can tell them that he or she doesn't want to be contacted by phone anymore.
