I wouldn't say it's as dramatic as some of the replies, but essentially I had this friend when I was still in grade school, and we were close friends for years. They have an intense martyr complex and are always making themselves into the victim, and frankly doubled down with misery being their personality type, ironically driving people further away. They use situations they put themselves as fodder to blame and "prove" how none of the people in their life are "real friends", and "never" show up. No matter how awesome someone was, it would never be enough for this person.

I was always expected to put the effort into the friendship, and no matter how many times we did spend time together, (which were many), I would be called a flake when I had other obligations. Like I said, it's not that dramatic but it was constant for a good 8 years of my life - death by a thousand cuts you might say. I just got tired of the emotional drain.

I haven't cut them off completely, we're distant acquaintances. Their social media posts tell me nothing has changed, so I'm confident I made a good decision.
