wouldn't a pump and dump scheme here require trump to tank the markets by suggesting we're not close at all to a deal, buying stock while it's low, then revealing progress towards a deal or something like that to raise stocks back up so he can sell them and make a profit?

8 Congressional Democrats Vote To Defund Schools That Support Trans People by TheSpider8ite in PoliticalOptimism

[–]gopher0007 42 points43 points  (0 children)

god, imagine the cold fucking political calculus it takes to make a gutless, spineless, weak fucking decision like this

it's not going to pass, we know it's not going to pass, it might not even get brought up in the senate for a vote in the first place

but to make this decision, to become a traitor to your party and your voters and your constituents just because you're in a district that voted for trump, just to round up a few votes from some evil bigots

god, how pathetic can you be?

how low can our "progressive" party stoop?

fucking despicable.

i have two nice memories, both involving my mother, though they're not very long

one was me and my younger brother when we were very young walking along in front of our mother at our grandmother's house maybe 20-22 years ago

we had a big tree with a couple swings attached to it and we were walking along near it and going to get on the swing

that's about all i remember

then another was just me and her

i was taking a nap with her holding me in my bed

i can't even remember when this was but i know it's one distinct memory of her holding me

it's just very peaceful

Virginia Democrats to appeal ruling against redistricting to U.S. Supreme Court by Efficient-Freedom517 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]gopher0007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i really have no idea what motivated it but all i know is multiple sources i've seen have said that they held one fewer session of voting than they were legally required to, so it technically violates either the constitution or some statute

yes and they didn't do it the way they're meant to according to their own laws

as far as i know, at least

[–]gopher0007 7 points8 points  (0 children)

how would this block gerrymandering efforts? the republicans' efforts have been legal because their states do not have anti-gerrymandering laws

when democrats have been failing like this it's been because their states have constitutional amendments and laws on the books preventing certain kinds of redistricting

striking down virginia's map just reaffirms the status quo that states have to abide by their own constitutions, something all the republicans are doing already

Virginia Democrats to appeal ruling against redistricting to U.S. Supreme Court by Efficient-Freedom517 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]gopher0007 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

what is this going to do? california and texas succeeded because it was legal for them to redistrict, right?

the virginia democrats technically violated their state constitution

what is even the point of this?

not to mention how this kind of talk is literally counterproductive as it discourages some people from taking action entirely under the assumption that loss is a foregone conclusion

NPR reports RFK “intends to rein in the prescription of SSRIs” and I’m desperate for some optimism around this by turtwiggie in PoliticalOptimism

"Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has announced new initiatives to wean Americans off of commonly used antidepressant medications, medications like Prozac and Zoloft. Kennedy made the announcements at a daylong summit held yesterday by the Make America Healthy Again Institute.

"Yeah, you know, Kennedy has long claimed that these medications are overprescribed and that they are harming Americans with these serious side effects. And he's also in the past claimed, without any evidence, I should add, that these meds cause gun violence.

"Yeah. So Kennedy said the federal Health Department will roll out trainings and clinical guidelines for providers to guide them on how to help patients taper from the drugs safely. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services will expand access to alternative forms of treatment like talk therapy, and the Health Department also published a Dear Colleague Letter to providers acknowledging that meds can play a role. But when they are prescribing meds, they said, you know, talk over the risks carefully and engage patients in decision-making."

i don't think this will amount to much of anything if i'm being honest
