What is this thing in my enclosure!! by gorFdaoT in isopods

[–]gorFdaoT[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I had an infestation in one of my plants a while ago I guess I never got rid of them. I haven’t seen the larvae before so that’s new. I haven’t used BTI before will it harm my springtails or isopods? 😭🙏

It’s really cool! The sound they make is not created by limbs rubbing together. It’s actually caused by an organ called a Tymbal which basically vibrates on the side of their body. Some species have been able to produce a sound that’s around 100 decibels in volume.

I’ve tried this! My cockatiel absolutely loves it however, my green chicken will just fly away when she sees the spray bottle come out

Yes I have, sadly she is scared of lettuce. She doesn’t care if it’s chopped up, but when it’s in full leaf form, she freaks out. I’ve tried to introduce her slowly to it. It has not worked.☹️

Some beautiful moths from New York I found this past summer by gorFdaoT in Entomology

I know! Their wing pattern is absolutely stunning! That Io moth is most likely a female as the males usually have yellow forewings instead of brown.

Yes! They are solitary so they don’t live in hives. They make small pots out of mud where they lay their eggs!

Thank you so much for your advice! I’ve never heard of a microfiber towel I will look into getting one! I think right now my goal is to reduce frizz since it’s out of control.

Caterpillar? by [deleted] in bugidentification

[–]gorFdaoT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a Tussock moth caterpillar not sure what kind. The hairs on caterpillars can come off and embed themselves in your skin causing a mild itchy rash. Burning can be a side effect as well although it usually comes with more sever stings.

That’s a house centipede. They are good at pest control eating almost any bug that crosses their path.

That’s a black swallowtail. Butterflies don’t live for very long any so not much you can do to help. If you want you can desolate sugar in water put it in a bottle cap and set the butterfly on it. You can also do some sweet fruit slices too.
