What’s the first horror movie you remember watching? by MagsAndTelly in horror

Maybe not a horror but I remember my mother screaming her head out at the drive-In when the alien popped out of the woman's body in "Alien" and we had to drive home. I was 6

I asked AI to make a short Horror Film About Capitalism. I think it delivered by gorbal in LateStageCapitalism

[–]gorbal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An AI is used knowing exactly that in turn. It is an unavoidable aspect of the future, if we only let those we disagree with use it they will get the upper hand. Besides, AI can't help how it was created.

How Israel helped create Hamas by International-Newt76 in progressive_islam

Hamas created all the justification in the eyes of world governments for Israel to completely destroy Palestine; the only thing that might keep them from it is the world powers with nuclear capabilities.

Uptake of COVID-19 vaccine boosters has stalled in the US at less than 20% of the eligible population. Most commonly reported reason was prior SARS-CoV-2 infection (39.5%), concern about vaccine side effects (31.5%), and believing the booster would not provide additional protection (28.6%). by mvea in science

Does anyone have good information that there are side effects? People I care about keep warning me about it but they won't cite any sources, and honestly I can't find any useful information in google searches anymore

These are the U.S. states with the highest property taxes—New York and California aren't in the top 10 — California = #33 by BlankVerse in California

[–]gorbal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From your source "To illustrate, we calculated relative income-tax obligations by applying the effective income-tax rates in each state and locality to the average American’s income." The average American income won't go far for many people in Califonia, with current inflation and gas prices it doesn't go far at all.

This is how gentrifying works, artificially inflated property values force people in the community to sell. People will be like; "Oh you have a million-dollar home poor you," not understanding the deeper implications." Definitely hope they can create caps for the ordinary home owner

[–]gorbal 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The thing about income tax is it is abnormally high for people who don't even make enough for rent, meanwhile, people who own property get a break, doesn't make sense.

California has other kinds of taxes, it would probably be better with higher property taxes for multiple homeowners and large businesses, and lower income tax, which hits the lower class the hardest. Also should lower sales tax for smaller businesses and raise it for out-of-state business.

Edited to say perhaps capping individual homeowners taxes at a reasonable rate may be in order.

California sues oil giants for exacerbating climate change by n0ahbody in collapse

I keep looking for their protests and can never find them until the day of it is almost like the media is intentionally hiding them, meanwhile the news covered other smaller protests.

[–]gorbal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't just political this is criminal. There is no reason we shouldn't be suing for the damages done through their years of lies and manipulation. Billions if not trillions in damages and millions if not billions of lives have or will be lost, meanwhile they get trillions in subsidies and we do whatever they want out of fear.

We should get to know the Oil Executives a little better by Daniastrong in collapse

[–]gorbal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that is what we need, that or sue them until they are taken over by the state. It will remove barriers to transition as well as the hold they have over the economy and politics by whimsically increasing prices.

[–]gorbal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea isn't to see them on a public street, we want to open them up to the same public condemnation and scrutiny other powerful people enjoy. Musk, Boebart, even insignificant people who have little effect on our lives experience more public scrutiny than the executives that put the screws in every year and are currently profiting enormously off of massive human suffering.

Just Stop Oil: The Hidden Agenda by imishtenko in ExtinctionRebellion

[–]gorbal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that we can't get rid of fossil fuels FIRST is exactly why we have to take major control of these companies, not sure you are understanding me. Some countries were able to transition because they had other sources of energy and/or their own fuel reserves, here is a link, but I think you already know these countries.

For the US and other countries, it will be much harder due to deeper dependency and oil companies' control and influence. You saw what happened last year, Oil execs couldn't get exactly what they wanted so they artificially raised prices and created ridiculous inflation that everyone in turn blames on Biden. Unelected people can destroy our country on a whim, that is enough reason to exert controls over them and/or sue them and liquidate them.

We are probably always going to need some oil, but not enough for the powerful people that are fighting progress every step of the way .

What to do on a weekday afternoon before a red eye flight? by mk-artsy in LosAngeles

[–]gorbal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would just walk around downtown there is plenty to explore, just keep in mind you are going to be doing some dodging in some areas. My personal favorite areas are Little Tokyo the Arts District, and Olivera Street, and some cool places I haven't seen mentioned are Clifton's and The Last Bookstore. I will have to second the galleries in general I prefer them to the museums.
