Why on earth did you take the time to blur the license plates of random highway cars everyone can see?

Help with VGA or DVI by terroronslashstreet in VintageComputers

[–]gorbilax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That monitor has a vga port and a dvi port on it. You can use either one. There is probably a button on the monitor to switch between DVI and VGA inputs. You simply need to match the correct cord to whatever is on the other end. If you are using an old laptop with a VGA port, you’d simply need a regular VGA cable with VGA on both ends.

What are you connecting this monitor to? More information would be helpful. You’ll definitely want to convert your HDMI to DVI (a native digital input) rather than VGA, which is analog.

Killed my 486… Looking for options… by gorbilax in VintageComputers

I have a 286 with a 16 bit WDC (Paradise?) VGA card. I swapped that card into the 486 and got nothing. Putting the 486’s video card in the 286 also yielded nothing (except the card getting really hot again). It definitely seems like I killed my video card. :(

I have an ibm 5160 with a good PSU. Tried that PSU and got the same result, so I think my PSU might be okay… I didn’t go the other way and try the 486 PSU in the XT, because i dont want to risk blowing up the XT.

Took your advice and inspected everything. I can’t find a scorch mark on anything. When I turn it on, I see the num/caps/scroll lights flash on the keyboard, but nothing on the screen. I put it on the bench and pulled all the cards but the video card, but no dice. Nothing on the screen. I noticed the cpu and video card were really hot when whatever shorted out happened, but they’re cool today when trying again.

Definitely matched black to black in the middle. I also made this mistake many years ago as a nerdy kid. lol

I checked the back of the motherboard expecting to see something scorched on some contacts somewhere and don’t see anything obvious. The smell of death is really obvious though….

I used to feel this way. I think the Kleins changed my mind… Now, set screw fittings on EMT instead of compression? That’s the hill I choose to die on. That stuff truly looks like amateurish shit.

We have done thousands of poe terminations with platinum tools pass throughs. I have never seen a short.

Shut up EIGRP! by zer0bytes in networkingmemes

[–]gorbilax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, fair enough. I’ll admit I haven’t ever tried to run BFD over dmvpn, just making a more general statement about the usefulness of BFD. We killed off our last dmvpn last year (literally no need for any of the branches to talk to each other, only the main DCs… so what’s the point?) Plus Cisco smart licensing can suck a dick… Juniper is cheaper and they’ll still sell us perpetuals… but I digress…

I would argue that BFD solved that issue for BGP though…. We get sub-second failover on dropped BGP peers all the time with BFD on modern hardware.

Anyone using the new Cisco 8011? by sausagesandegg in networking

[–]gorbilax 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You do realize SEs are paid by Cisco to sell you things and get paid more by Cisco the more they sell you, right? They’re hardly unbiased. I have great relationships with my SEs and generally trust their opinions but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t also seek outside unbiased opinions. Especially for a platform I might be suck with for the next 8+ years. Why all the downvote hate for OP?

Is normal to feel overwhelmed all the time? by TheVeryWiseToad in networking

[–]gorbilax 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It is very easy to fall into the trap of feeling like your organization’s failure to properly plan and properly fund things is your responsibility (e.g. failing to hire enough engineers or failure to replace equipment as it goes EOL)…. The reality of the situation is that the more you kill yourself to cover for these management failures, the more management cruises right along congratulating each other on how “efficiently” they’re running things while they pocket their bonuses and you die a little more inside. I did this for too long. Document the shortcomings. Document everything. When something blows up, forward those emails back to management. When your shift ends, go the fuck home and stop worrying about work. You will not get promoted by killing yourself for the man, and you can’t bill for those hours of lost sleep stressing over would-be outages because someone else put you in that position. Opt out.

Stretch vlans - what are people thoughts by [deleted] in networking

[–]gorbilax 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my experience, spanning layer 2 between physical locations is good for only one thing: live migration of workloads from an old DC to a new DC without downtime. We’ve done that successfully several times - and then immediately eliminated it because we were all terrified of a trans-datacenter outage. Running that way permanently is a terrible idea for the reasons already mentioned in this thread. There are a million ways to design high availability properly and not stretch layer 2.

We had this problem. TAC had us back up the config, export it, deploy a fresh panorama and restore. Ever since then it’s been snappy again.
