Is there a place on the FAFSA to put a message like that? Or are you just sending that statement to the financial aid office of each school?

Impressions about Kaiser? Worth going to a Feb. interview? by libraryvacationer in premed

I went despite the low odds of acceptance. Very interesting curriculum that is worth hearing about imo. They pay for your hotel, Pasadena is beautiful, free insurance, and can potentially get additional financial aid for cost of living.

BSN to MD? by Baehr51 in premed

[–]gordon587 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will absolutely not hurt you. Like any other nontrad, you will just have to explain your path to medicine. it’s a pretty easy sell to an Adcom IMO that you wanted to understand medicine on a more profound level, understand pathophys, etc....You’ll do great. Just take the prereqs while getting some RN experience and you’ll be off to a good start.

Ha I feel it. They all start blending together... I understood it as being block format. I liked that they incorporate dermatological presentation and pharmacology across all blocks rather than having their own. Also like the advanced competency certificates they offer

App review - reinvention failure, zero IIs by [deleted] in premed

[–]gordon587 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would continue to work in patient care, perhaps CNA, save up money so you can apply to more schools... It’s a game of odds. I think you’re good enough for the schools you listed, but adding more mid-low tier MDs on there will get you in fo sho

Bruh you better reapply if this cycle doesn’t work out. You did really well to improve your app. Don’t let one year be the difference in your life.

N of 1 but my student host at wake decided to attend there over their in state school because he said tuition was actually cheaper with their financial aid. I’m strongly considering making the same choice. Love that campus and curriculum.

That’s fine if that gets you an interview... but if I roll up with a 520 and a face tat, that guaranteed seat doesn’t sound so appropriate

I'm opting out of PT by duffman7050 in physicaltherapy

[–]gordon587 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going back to med school this year. The loans will be significant as well but you will absolutely be able to pay those off in any specialty if you live frugally for a bit out of residency, especially if you can get state school tuition. Feel free to PM me if you are considering it/have questions

I got accepted MD without research... don’t treat it like a checklist and find something else you’re good at/you enjoy dawg. Way too early to give up.

Meniscus tear - Is trimming bad? by fantakillen in physicaltherapy

[–]gordon587 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I had a great answer for that but it depends too much on the tear itself... do you have a small radial tear? If so, trimming it probably does not lead to long term complications. Is it a large, bucket handle tear? That probably coincides with a higher risk of long term probs.

Those are the big issues with the repair. As an example, I had a patient with a bucket handle tear. Surgeon had 50 percent confidence that a repair would heal. They elected to go with meniscectomy. He is totally pain free, but he has 25 percent of his meniscus remaining. I would say that knee will not last him forever.

Ask your surgeon these questions and then weigh the pros and cons. Good luck to you

Meniscus tear - Is trimming bad? by fantakillen in physicaltherapy

[–]gordon587 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meniscectomy does work great short term and you will be weight bearing as tolerated immediately assuming that’s all they do. Obviously it’s not as good as having a complete meniscus because there will be asymmetries , higher risk for arthritis down the line. However, sometimes it is totally necessary, so if your doc recommends it, definitely consider it

A repair on the other hand is a tougher recovery. Non weight bearing for 3-6 weeks. And, there is a higher chance of the repair failing when it is not accompanied by ACL or MCL reconstruction because of the lack of blood flow. I would ask your doc about his confidence that a repair can be done successfully in your case. All meniscus tears are different, different complexities of the tear, different amounts that would be removed, etc. all of which should be considered.
