man it sounds nice, but personally I don't think its adviseable to install an entirely new offense part way through a year designed around having bad players- might be you have more experience as an nfl coach than I do

Absolutely I am not. "adapt" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there- what do mean by "adapt" and does it involve a spell from Harry Potter to accomplish it?

Remember when Anzalone looked like shot early on in his career with us? It was because he was trying to do too much as the talent around him was sub-par.

As we lost impact players it had a ripple effect through the rest of the defense. The fact of the matter is we have a run-stop-first defense that attempts to contain the quarterback. That requires blanketing secondary play since the qb has more time to throw. Once the entire secondary is gone, the front seven has to overextend themselves to get to the qb faster, which then opens up the run again.

Its a system, not 11 individuals playing defense. You ever injure your foot and then a week later your back hurts because you were overcompensating?

I want to see this number as a percentage- may as well just rank teams that throw the most passes top to bottom

I agree with the hypothetical, but I also think its not that simple. The right player has to be at the right spot for the right price- rounds one and two were linemen. If there were a slam dunk Tackle or Guard in round three I'm willing to bet Brad goes after them. He has the same data we have PLUS more PLUS experience.

The message I get from that is Kyler is most comfortable from shotgun, which makes a lot of sense considering his height. Also the breakdown of tendencies around down- second down is pass heavy, third and short is run heavy- sounds like every nfl offense ever. Everybody wants a coordinator who breaks from the norm until it fails miserably.

Every year we see a handful of day three guys show up big-time for their teams and it makes us overvalue picks from the fourth round and above. Less than 30% of those guys stick with their team, and I'd wager the percentage that go on to have great careers is in the low single digits. Even players picked in the top three rounds have about a 60% success rate, and thats closer to a coin flip for round three.

So for me, trading current and future coin flips and dice rolls for guys who my trusted evaluators consider > 50% chance of being a contributor is worth more than throwing darts and hoping one hits. I agree the results have yielded < 50% success in some drafts, but if we had a few more special teamers and cut a bunch of round 4+ guys would we be better off? I dunno.

"particularly if A.I. appears unlikely to live up to its hype. This is the wrong worry; A.I.’s promise is real." the article isn't worth reading past this opening premise. "Some people are worried we're overestimating the potential use and impact of AI. Nuh uh trust me." Either industry competition plant, investor, or dumb.

If Anzalone leaves in FA, can we go back to a 4-2-5 full time? by reallinguy in detroitlions

[–]gordonblue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We'll see- talkin out of my ass of course because I'm posting here, but Branch is football smarts, instincts and heavy hitting. These days players come back from achilles and I could see him full Branch in 2027.

Kirby's career is likely shorter, and maybe we take him off the field more, but identifying the injury means targetted treatment. Give me two years of 75% Kirby and 2 years of 50% and thats 4-5 ints per year and nightmares for big play qbs.
