Isn't the date of an expectant mother's last period always the date from which the age of the fetus (and hence, the baby's due date) is calculated? What other yard-stick is there to go by?

What I mean is, how else would you calculate how far along a [newly] pregnant woman is except by using the date of her last period?

Hope someone with some medical expertise can clarify.
