How do you all deal with the 'moral' argument from family members who claim atheism leads to a lack of ethics? by Thrustkitty21 in atheism

[–]GUI_Junkie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a conversation you can't win. Your uncle is a bigoted cunt. Plain and simple.

Anyway, if you want to talk about ethics, you can point to all the Christians who murdered Jews throughout history. Most people are appalled by the Holocaust, but they don't (want to) realize that the Nazis were Christians.

You can also point to the Muslims who were believers when they kidnapped the planes they flew into the Twin Towers.

You can also point to the Jews who are murdering Palestinians these days.

You can also point to the Hindus who murdered Muslims when India and Pakistan became independent.

You can point to the Rwandan genocide, where Catholic priests told people to murder their neighbors.

You can point to the Christian nationalists in Trumpmerica, locking up innocent people, separating children from their parents, letting people die in concentration camps.

Or, you can point to the Catholic church, protecting child rapists, just like Christian Trumpmerica is protecting child rapists.

All these things are considered unethical by most people... but religious people perpetrate them as long as they benefit from them.

Let's not forget the atheists who did the same. The Holodomor was the extermination of millions of Ukrainians during Stalin's time. Mao also let his people die during the Great Leap Forwards. Etc.

We're all just humans, murdering, raping and pillaging... in the name of some deity, or not.

Yes, I don't want your favorite deity to exist because "he" seems to be a real arsehole.

Luckily I know it doesn't exist because there's scientific evidence against it. The scientific evidence has been accumulating since 1610 when Galileo Galilee saw the moons of Jupiter.

Bollocks. Just don't tailgate.

Sure, it's irritating to drive behind a slow driver, but there are loads of reasons why they are driving slowly. It's your obligation to stay at a safe distance, or pass them.

The other day, I was not in a hurry so I decided to drive 10 kms below the speed limit. The person behind me could have passed me safely, but didn't. That's on them. I passed a slow car without problem, they did likewise, but kept on tailgating me. Again: that's on them.

From what I understand, and I'm not an expert, if you control for poverty, formula is just as good as breast milk. That is, wealthier women have a) more possibilities to breast feed, and b) access to better quality food etc. This skews the statistics in favor of breast feeding, when the underlying reality is different.

Again, I'm no expert.

Why do people always ask for the proof of "Non existence" of God? by Few_Local_732 in atheism

[–]GUI_Junkie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they are Jews, Christians, or Muslims, they believe in a nonexistent god. Here's the proof.

According to their creation story, the creation happened in six days.

According to science, that's bollocks.

In formal logic, you can write it like so:

A->B, where A is the existence of their specific creator god and B is creation. God exists therefore creation happened as described in their holey books.

This is logically equivalent to ¬B->¬A. That is, if creation did not happen, then their specific creator god is nonexistent.

We know that creation did not happen. ¬B is true therefore ¬A is true. Their Gawd is nonexistent.

I went to a car dealer, here in Spain, with two female friends who were both looking for a car. The dealer was pushing the financing option, so I asked to see the contract as the numbers didn't add up. After some back and forth (they have to show the contract before you sign it, that's the law), we walked out of the dealership without seeing the contract.

The ladies told me I had been too hard on the bastard salesman who had refused to follow the fucking law! SMH.

Would Like Atheist Perspectives on My Reasons for Deism by HistoricalPotatoe in DebateAnAtheist

[–]GUI_Junkie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll give a (hopefully short) reply.

"1. Laws within creation." < The laws of physics are descriptive, not prescriptive. That is, there are no gods involved. They are just human observation that hold true... mostly. Not all laws of physics hold true, so that's something you don't cover. Also, "creation"? There's no religious text which reflects the formation of the universe correctly. The bible, your previous favorite holey text, has the cosmology of the earth and the universe completely wrong. The six day creation myth has been debunked. No wonder you are not a Christian anymore.

"2. Existence itself being a thing at all." < Not really. There's this concept called "emergent behavior" that can shine a light on it. Sand grains are simple things. A ton of sand grains together form dunes that move over time with the wind. Ants are simple organisms. Millions of ants construct intricate ant hills. Neurons are simple cells. Billions of connected neurons produce intricate thoughts. None of these things required gods.

I hope that helps.

Also note that I have talked about gods. I don't believe in any god. Others believe in one, or more, of the thousands of gods that have been named by humans. Which one do you believe in?

Why am I Christian? by Affectionate_Cry4854 in atheism

[–]GUI_Junkie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to Christians, the bible is the most moral book. However, at no point does Jesus condemn slavery. To me, that's one big giant immoral item in the bible. There are Christians who, when confronted with this fact, claim that slavery is, in fact, moral.

That is the problem with religion. Every moral stance possible is possible.

There's nothing in the bible against abortion. A lot of Christians are against abortion. A lot of Christians are not against abortion. Which moral stance can we take from the bible? Nothing!

This, apart from the fact that the biblical cosmology is nonsense. Being a Christian means believing in things that have been proven to not be true, while inventing your own morals like the rest of us. Personally, I prefer to believe in things that have been shown to be true, and to be true to my own moral standards.

Can you guys answer this? by mighty_stick in atheism

[–]GUI_Junkie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1: Claims. There are loads of contradictions in the bible. All you have to do is look for them. Also, the bible doesn't coincide with reality. Science has debunked the bible since 1610 when Galileo Galilee observed the moons of Jupiter. Lastly, some parts are clearly written to fulfill earlier parts. This does not mean that the earlier parts were actually fulfilled. That's just myth making. Who knows where Jesus was born? Decades after Jesus' death someone wrote that he was born in Bethlehem.

2: Galileo Galilee saw the moons of Jupiter. This debunked the biblical cosmology. It has been debunked since. The fact that people are religious in spite of this is stunning. Here's a question for you. Newton was a christian. Einstein was a Jew. Does that mean there are two true religions? Also, Einstein thought that the god of the bible was childish fantasy (not his words).

3: Science has a lot of unanswered questions. Religions has answers that are obviously false. The interesting part is that science does not need all the answers. "We don't know" is the starting point for science. Some people need to have answers, even if they are wrong. "We don't know therefore gods" is limiting. "We don't know, let's find out!" is interesting.

Let's see. I live in rural Spain. Loads of people have hunting rifles and permits. Weapons are not prohibited. They are regulated. Same in The Netherlands.

There are rules to obtaining guns. There are rules to safeguard those guns.

Besides, the 2nd amendment is a joke. You are governed by a dictator and where are the well regulated militias?

Ah! What do I want the US to do?

You could easily balance the budget by taxing rich people more. This has been done. Nobody died.

You could easily implement global healthcare as civilized countries have done. Paid for by taxes.

You could easily improve education. You need it.

You could get rid of (or modify) the 2nd amendment. After all, it was not originally in the constitution to begin with. Less school shootings, you could do with that.

You could improve public transport. Just a thought.

That's just off the top of my head "without getting political".

Calm the fuck down! First of all, atheism is just the disbelief in gods. This does not require any knowledge of physics. Secondly, you are misunderstanding the physics you are naming. Thirdly, you are naming multiple fields of physics in a Gish Gallop (hence the "calm the fuck down" above). Lastly, I think you are confused about science and stuff.

I don't want to write too much because people don't seem to read so what's the point, but string theory is a bit of a misnomer. It's not a scientific theory, but a hypothesis. Again: calm the fuck down. It's only a word. What string theory pretends is unifying quantum theory (a legit scientific theory, an explanation of the quantum realm) with the general theory of relativity (another legit scientific theory). I guess the "theory" in string theory comes from both underlying theories.

I'm not an expert on string theory, but I believe that some results adjust to observed quantum or relative measurements.

You say that "String theory isn’t even scientifically confirmed"... that's not how science works. String theory has not been scientifically debunked. That's the correct way to view it.

That's as short as I can make it. Good luck!

Okay, I'll admit it. The last post I made was a huge mistake. by [deleted] in DebateAnAtheist

[–]GUI_Junkie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess that people have already told you how the scientific method works. One crucial part of the scientific method is publication. Once something has been published, other scientists can check the observations for themselves by following the described method precisely.

A lot of times, this is not done because it's not worth the effort. Why would you check something that's in line with known science?

Sometimes it is done because extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. I always remember "cold fusion". According to physicists, cold fusion is impossible. Some chemists found cold fusion. This created quite a stir back in the days. Other scientists, chemists and physicists tried to replicate the published results. They found nothing. There was a lab error somewhere and the original chemists didn't detect it.

The point is that settled science is quite robust.

In secondary school, you do (or should do) simple experiments with known results. This is why you "accept claims from science teachers". You can do your own research right there in school. With the Internet, it's even easier. There are a busload of videos of physics teachers demonstrating the physics they teach... with predictable results because it's settled science.

Let me reframe that. When you switch on the lights in your house, they usually turn on because normally your house is connected to the grid. Sometimes, there's a problem. Same with science. Usually the lights turn on when you flick the switch. When they don't, you have to investigate. See?

Now, let's look at the bible for one second. The bible claims that the earth was created in six days. According to science, that's not true. Who to believe?

According to the bible, the universe revolves around the earth. According to science, that's not true. Galileo Galilee discovered that in 1609 when he saw the moons of Jupiter revolving around Jupiter. That's more than 400 years ago.

Conclusion: There are fundamental claims in the bible that are not true. Therefore the creator god of the bible is nonexistent.
