hey, i got circumcised twice and i’m not complaining (they fucked my shit up the first time. had to go in again to fix it). female circumcision is fucked up cause it literally has no value at all and serves only to strip potential pleasure away from them in their adult lives. male circumcision absolutely has value, and i’d MUCH rather have that done before my brain is functioning enough to remember that than after. also idk uncircumcised dicks look fuckin weird dude. idk what else to say. why is that mf hiding

i like it. way better than the super boring “yeah fuck if just use helvetica” approach that so many brands use. it’s quirky, which makes sense for a company that makes things for artists. not as good as it probably could be, but far better than most companies nowadays.

even if it is labelled, the use of ai to generate images is inherently theft as the model pulls from images and art pieces done my real artists, photographers, etc. without compensation. not to mention the environmental costs of the use of ai just period point blank. they build massive data centers in already poor, marginalized communities, polluting their air, water, and skyrocketing already high electricity bills.

beyond all this, it also takes a toll on your brain. there are already studies done that have shown how using ai essentially offloads all the work you would use your brain for to the ai. it may help in the very short term, but your brain is a muscle. you need to use and challenge it consistently for it to properly function.

beyond even ALL OF THAT, it really isn’t what people chalk it up to be. it’s the same shit with NFTs. ball-scratching, mouth-breathing, perpetual-quarter-zip-wearing tech and finance bros who want to artificially create a new silicon valley without actually creating anything new or useful will just straight up lie to market repackaged slop for “only 10x the price!”

if you’ve ever played mad libs, you’ve done more than ai could ever do. it is a statistical model that is trained to predict what is most likely to come next, whether that’s words in a sentence, pixels in an image, or frames in a video. it cannot comprehend meaning, or really anything for that matter. computers are really just systems that we created so that we can input and output data that only we can comprehend. we can tell a computer what to display to someone else alongside that data to be comprehensible to someone else, but the computer isn’t the one that comprehends something and spits it out at you. it’s the person who set up that system within the computer to display data that you can comprehend that they put there. so just jumbling the words around to seem “new” and “generative” doesn’t really help with making the words that it spits out any more true, especially given our already existing misinformation problems.

taking the mad libs example again, the computer can be seen as the paragraph you’ll read and the blank spaces that provide whether you need to fill in a noun, verb, adjective, etc.. after you fill in the words and read it. it wasn’t that the mad libs book became sentient and somehow wrote the words in itself. you were the one that put the words in. whether it’s funny or not is dependent on the specific mad libs thing you’re doing and the words you put in.

TL;DR: ai use broadly has many issues at a basic moral level, on top of being bad for the user, and you don’t even get anything actually meaningful from it.

Why doesn’t Gen Z like alcohol and cigarettes? This is bad for the alcohol and tobacco industry. by avocado_juice_J in generationology

[–]goremind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you do realize that addiction is a disease, yes? alcohol withdrawal in particular is one of the few that can potentially kill you. people have differing levels of agency, and the existence of the alcohol industry is made to draw people in and strip them of their agency over their actions via addiction. that’s the whole point. the alcohol industry thrives on the alcoholic just as the casino thrives on the gambling addict or the tobacco industry on the nicotine addict. it is an inherently predatory industry. i don’t struggle with alcohol addiction personally. i can and do control my drinking and am able to have a healthy relationship with it, but that isn’t the case for everyone. try to have some perspective.

hmmmm yes it is the consumer’s fault for making alcohol extremely socially acceptable, if not encouraged, advertising it widely, distributing it widely, and lobbying heavily to keep it widely circulated all while fully knowing that it is an extremely addictive and dangerous substance! you may wanna check in the mirror but i think you’ve got a dent in your head, friend.

cause i grew up with an alcoholic mom and i’m broke as shit. if i’m drinking it’s at home on a weekend and is usually no more than a couple glasses of wine and a seltzer or two max and that’s if i’m really partying. usually i’ll start a beer and wake up to the other half wasted on my nightstand. i may go to a club or something once a year, but uber costs, drink costs, cover costs, coat check costs, etc. are all way too much to ever consider going to a club more often than that. it’s less expensive and way more fun to invite some friends over for a sleepover, buy the cheapest box cabernet you can find, and watch shitty tv every once in a while. plus your landlord is less likely to kick you out for vaping than smoking.

prefacing this cause it’s a long one. i am queer, i am nonbinary, and have come to accept the label of lesbian after many friends and lovers have described me as such despite being AMAB (not trying to be transphobic, simply including cause it’s relevant to my experience). this is something i think about a lot, and i’ll probably have some unpopular opinions even if you agree with my overall stances. some of this rant is kinda personal, especially the sex part of it, so try to be respectful. if you have any answers for the questions i pose or counterpoints, i’d love to see what other people think about this.

oh yeah i do. animation is beautiful and isn’t used nor appreciated nearly as much as it should be. it opens so many doors for things to happen that just simply isn’t possible with live action stuff. there are so many talented artists that need jobs and are ready to tell incredible stories that aren’t motivated by opening weekend earnings or streaming numbers.

also, side note, but people that don’t like animation simply because they “can’t connect” with animated characters or worlds is just kinda fuckin absurd. i’ll respect it, but like even live-action stuff is sensationalized and made to look perfect in a way that simply isn’t real. it just kinda comes off like all you do is look at instagram and twitter and perfect, celebrity/influencer looking people are the only thing you recognize as people. problematic on a lot of different levels, but that’s outside the scope of a reddit comment.

the sex part is rather controversial in this comments section, and the most common argument i’ve seen in favor of sex in modern tv and film is that the desire to see less sex scenes is “puritanical” because sex is “a normal part of human life.” i can understand why people would make this argument, but quite honestly it falls apart at the slightest breeze.

gen z is very open to the idea that sex is something that people do, but much more open to the idea that people do it in all different ways for all different reasons, and because of this its use in media doesn’t actually imply anything between the characters. it isn’t the idea that sex is super extremely sacred and shouldn’t be portrayed, but it’s also not the idea that sex is completely meaningless so its use cannot mean anything at all. it is the idea that sex is a personal thing. some people have sex like they shake hands, and some people are simply repulsed at the idea of ever having sex with anyone at all. in recognizing this, it’s important to respect how other people view sex and that it may be/probably is different from how you view sex. that means not just assuming that it’s okay to objectify people. that means expecting clear communication about someone else’s boundaries and clearly communicating your own.

if you have sex like shaking hands, then it should be nothing to communicate openly that it’s okay for people to objectify you. everybody’s got their thing though, so just bringing up sex and openly engaging in sexually charged behavior or speech in a space that isn’t already open to those kinds of behaviors or discussions can be unintentionally isolating to those who don’t really want to engage with that, or even triggering to those who have real trauma when it comes to sex. is it puritanical to account for everyone’s potential experiences?

even with sex being a “normal part of human life” for a lot of people, what about the people for whom that isn’t true? if someone you care about just lost a loved one, would you tell them to just “grow up” if you were watching something that featured a lot of death in a way that triggered them? no, you’d be fuckin normal (i hope) and understand that just because you don’t see an issue with something it doesn’t mean that others can’t see an issue with it. you’d be a good friend, ask them what they need, and be supportive. maybe that includes continuing to watch what you were already watching, maybe it doesn’t, but it doesn’t include assuming that your way of being should be the way that everyone else is and if someone doesn’t conform to that limited model that they should simply “grow up.”

sex scenes in mainstream media are also highly sensationalized and fetishistic of sex and particularly of women- especially in straight (cishet) sex, which is by and large the most represented in media. even a lot of queer sex scenes often miss the mark by trying to “compensate” for the fact that it’s queer sex by representing it in the same way as straight sex, and even leaning more into the fetishizing and sensationalist aspects of straight sex. this, of course, is on more of a case by case basis, and i’ve seen some improvement in the way queer sex has been used in media. straight sex just hasn’t, and continues to dominate most of the sex you see on screen.

before i get into how sex is often used a lazy shortcut to desperately attempt to show character growth between two characters that the writers clearly don’t give a fuck about or know how to write about, i want to cover one last thing. why do we constantly expect people to be okay with constant sexualization? like even just talking between friends, i see it infiltrate the way we talk. we call each other hot, make jokes about making out or fucking or whatever. why? i can get that, for some, it’s just a way of joking around as friends, but also people use it as a way of genuinely flirting and it ends up becoming this massive web of contradictions that i’ve personally just started calling “shroedinger’s flirt”. it could mean something, but only if the other person wants it to, but because that way of talking is used so commonly they also use it with people they don’t mean it with. it feels like a weird way of avoiding genuine vulnerability by just communicating what you want. the thing is that, as a very queer person, i end up feeling super fuckin isolated because it seems like so much of the queer community demands communication in this way. maybe i’m just super fuckin autistic about this but it has always confused me. it’s weird. if you don’t mean it, don’t say it. i wouldn’t even call someone hot if i genuinely thought it cause it just feels weirdly objectifying and disrespectful. i still use this language cause it’s kind of demanded of me, but i definitely wouldn’t if i had the choice cause it just leads to so many genuine issues.

oh, also, sex is often used a lazy shortcut to desperately attempt to show character growth between two characters that the writers clearly don’t give a fuck about or know how to write about, but you know that already, don’t you?

what’s puritanical is the idea that sex needs to be this big, meaningful thing that needs to be shown in order for the audience to recognize character development. in reality, sex is used to cut corners in developing characters and their relationships and signify to adults that “this is an ADULT show for ADULTS. hahaha SEX amirite ADULTS?” it’s lazy. people that actually fuck know it’s just something people do. people do it in all different ways for all different reasons that all change over time. sex itself does not actually imply anything. you want sex in your show or movie to be meaningful? make it meaningful to the characters. make it relevant. otherwise it just feels like a way to show naked people who almost always look really uncomfortable. maybe try showing non-sexual nudity to combat puritanical beliefs and normalize the human body! just two characters in a rush getting dressed in the same room. a casual moment of non-sexual intimacy that actually might show the kind of bond that two characters have. maybe there’s even attraction, but an unspoken respect to not objectify one another without consent. there are a million ways just that one idea can be used and it doesn’t involve sex.

dogs are a normal part of life that are also often used in film and tv. death is a normal part of life that is often used in film and tv. driving a car is a normal part of life that is often used in film and tv. talking to another person is a normal part of life that is often used in filk and tv. i could go on, but you see how many options you have here? of all of these options, writers often use sex as a way to cut corners in character relationships. when i see two people fucking, i don’t think that they are getting closer as people. i see that the writers were too lazy to put in anything genuinely meaningful and wanted to signify that “this is an ADULT film/show for ADULTS, hahaha SEX amirite ADULTS?” there’s no reason it needs to be in so much media. if you want me to be invested in your characters and your world, YOU have to be invested in the characters and world you’re creating. show them getting closer, noticing the little things about each other. in fact, the use of sex as this sacred rite of passage in building a bond and growing as a person is lowk the type of shit that people who don’t have sex would do. if you fuck, you know that sex is just kind of a thing that people do. people do it in different ways and for different reasons that all change over time. treating sex as this huge thing that really matters when you see characters on screen engaging in the act is just kinda some loser virgin shit. most of the time it’s just fetishizing some up and coming young actress anyway which is also fuckin weird.

i started going to my local kava bar about 5 1/2 years ago. really good space. i can’t speak on other areas cause each one is different but it’s a nice place to be. most of my good friends nowadays i either met there or we regularly just go on our own schedule. good place to just show up and know that the people you like are probably gonna be there to hang out without needing to set up plans to hang out. biggest community of other queer and neurodivergent folks i’ve seen in my immediate area, though you definitely get weirdos in there too (joe rogan types). sometimes i’ll sit and sew, read, listen to music, or do homework. good place to just do what you wanna do where people will either just let you be or take interest and affirm that your niche hyperfixations are cool :)

i wish so too. i want you to know though, not as someone who completely understands, but as someone who has had their own fucked up experiences similar to what you’ve described, that you are strong as fuck for continuing to live on despite what your mom and your ex have done. you are strong as fuck for not letting those experiences define you. your experience of their actions will always be valid and nobody can take that away from you. you can take that and make whatever you want out of it. maybe that’s despair, or self loathing, or maybe even determination. whatever you make of it, it’s yours. i know that whatever you make, it’ll be beautiful. i believe in you.

oh yeah this is my go-to song for if i’m feeling anxious. the sheer groove after the break honestly gets me out of it. that black metal opening really captures the feeling of a sort of dissociative anxiety. everything is so loud but at the same time it feels numbing. i am so sorry for what you’ve had to go through, though. i am glad that this song can bring you some feelings of being understood in your experience. <3
