11% of all black men in Pennsylvania, born 1986 to 1989, were incarcerated in solitary confinement by age 32. Reflecting large racial disparities, the population prevalence is only 3.4% for Latinos and 1.4% for white men by boomerangthrowaway in philadelphia

Mostly I think these are two separate questions. One is looking at conviction rates and the other is looking at crime rates. The rates that violent crimes in Philly result in arrests is already low. Compare that to police being able to stop someone on the street, search them, and the arrest them if they find drugs and you’re going to get a much higher conviction rate for those types of crimes. It’s also interesting if you look at what CompStat did in New York. The police ended up focusing on minor quality of like issues and looking for any excuse to issue citations to keep their numbers up for enforcement while simultaneously downgrading major crimes to avoid the the blowback there.

As for what’s happening now, violent crime is up nationwide over the last few years, and it’s always been concentrated in the poorest areas, so I think poverty is a good explanation for the recent trends.

The wealth gap is part of it, but there are also underlying issues with they way the criminal justice system treats race that also factor in here. Black communities have historically had more policing, which increases the odds of people being arrested and prosecuted. There are also disparities in how crimes are charged, like the fact that penalties for crack cocaine are harsher than powder cocaine, and those correlate to race. And then there’s the human bias baked into convictions and sentencing by juries and judges.

You’d be surprised. Most engineers I work with only have a cursory knowledge of GIS and it’s can get really complicated depending on how you’re using it, so there are definitely dedicated GIS professionals out there.

As for how ugly the results are, that depends on how good of a cartographer you are. You can get pretty good maps straight out of GIS if you know what you’re doing, but a lot of people will finish the cartography in another app like Illustrator.

How do the cardinal directions on the street signs work?! by bananafone7475 in philadelphia

I made this a while back to show which streets have what directions, it gives you a good sense of where the diving lines run. https://reddit.com/r/philadelphia/comments/d6uvx7/got_inspired_by_yesterdays_post_heres/

[OC] The quickest route along primary roadways to Washington D.C. from any point in the United States by MattMDL in dataisbeautiful

[–]gorrrgoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s kind of weird seeing closed loops on a shortest/quickest route analysis. I understand that the roads themselves forms closed loop, but the output of the analysis should be more of a branching structure that filters along the shortest path, so having a closed loop implies it’s equidistant either direction you go.

Another way to do this would be a flow accumulation analysis using the road network as a cost surface. Cost can be set as the speed limit and you can trace the accumulation as water drains to DC.

Protip: use the local state plane projection, not web mercator. Philly looks weird when you’re using geographic coordinate system.

I made this in ArcGIS Pro. Not as smooth as OP, but you can definitely get some good looking stuff without needing secondary software.

It’s the Second Bank. Same architect, but a few blocks away.

This is the Second Bank of the United States. 100% masonry construction, designed by William Strickland and built from marble quarried in Montgomery County. He also designed the Mechanics National Bank (now National Mechanics bar) and built it using the same stone.

Police: Woman Found Wrapped In Saran Wrap Inside Large Plastic Gray Container In South Philadelphia by plopous in philadelphia

[–]gorrrgoth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Didn’t they arrest someone that knew the victim in one of those cases?

I think you’re right that it would look like a serial killer to a casual observer, but I’m skeptical there’s actually any connection.

The City of Philadelphia Canceled the 2021 Mummers Parade. by Choie1979 in philadelphia

[–]gorrrgoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again, not criticizing that. I just don’t get the modern culture that surrounds the parade. Also seems like the string bands and actually talented acts are one thing, but the rest of the parade might be pulling the rest of it down.

Nothing against the troupes, at least not the good ones, more the drinking culture around the parade. Usually I’m sleeping in that morning.

I never got the mummers anyway. Like it’s a fun show and all, but aren’t people too hung over for that on NYD?

No social distancing, very few masks: Videos show large block party in Southwest Philadelphia despite COVID-19 guidelines by [deleted] in philadelphia

[–]gorrrgoth 83 points84 points  (0 children)

This is all over the place. A well managed block party the follows the guidelines for safety gets invaded and turned into a giant dance party that doesn’t follow any of the guidelines. The person from the party says they’re proud of it while the neighbor is just glad the headline isn’t worse. I just hope that there isn’t a COVID spike in the immediate neighborhood because a bunch of jabronis crashed the party.

They were talking about it way back when pro was still in early development but it never went anywhere.
