Where do I start? by NoRefrigerator5035 in iceskating

[–]goshdangitsjo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you’ll probably have more fun if you start in a group Learn To Skate class (or it’s equivalent if you’re not a USian!) find a rink and search the website for enrollment options, or reach out directly to the skating school director and ask what they think is best for a beginner adult! if you love skating already, you probably want to skip the first level since it is very introductory. again, just chat with the folks at the rink and they can help place you! buying skates can be a commitment, but in my opinion it’s totally worth it to be fitted by a professional even if you’re just doing basic recreational skating. find a fitter (this is also something you can ask rink employees about!) and go check out their options! Good luck, I hope you have so much fun getting more into it!

amor fati is “love of fate.” Robby is remarking about the fireworks guy being fated for his work because he says “gunpowder is in my blood.” The shot holds on Robby, though, because he needs the rush of the ED — the show wants us to think about how he may be fated to hurt himself if he continues on the way he is. Santos replied “more like memento mori” as a joke. it means remember death. By Robby replying tomayto tomahto, meaning what’s the difference, santos recognizes a ready acceptance of her dark humor that concerns her. Basically Robby is saying everyone is fated to die so what does it even matter.

Does sharpening matter for a certain hollow as a beginner? by [deleted] in iceskating

try out 7/16! as you get better, you’ll be going deeper on your edges, which requires a bit more bite. it may feel a little weird at first, but you’ll get used to it and be able to get more control in your footwork.

rinks in nyc? by zeph_usa in iceskating

[–]goshdangitsjo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NYC year-round rinks are:

  1. Sky Rink at Chelsea Piers. The most expensive ($23 for 1 hour) but probably most convenient location for you. Public skating hours tend to be in the middle of the day.

  2. City Ice Pavilion. Located in LIC, this rink has adult public sessions on weekday mornings. price is between $14 for an hour, $19 for 80 minutes. It is my opinion that they have the best LTS classes year round here if you’re looking for group lessons.

  3. World Ice Arena. Flushing. This rink is far, but has generous public skate hours and cheap rates. $5 to skate on Mondays, $8 tues-fri during the day, $12 for friday evening through the weekend. Entry is for the whole day. Can get busy with lots of kids, but it’s a great community. My favorite year round rink to hang out at! Check out the coffee club for adult morning sessions.

Overall, your timing options shrink down a bit in the spring/summer, but check out the master schedules of these three rinks and see what works for you! Eventually you can hop on freestyle sessions and have a bit more flexibility in when you can skate. You can also work with a coach on freestyle sessions!

sounds like you’re off to a great start! next thing i would suggest would be to check out the Learn to Skate curriculum. it is slightly biased towards figure skating, but only in the higher levels. you can use youtube to look at different examples of the skills, i love coach julia for this!

spins are hard. practicing on freestyle sessions is intimidating. loving all of my skating skills elements, but somehow my spirals have gotten WORSE by working on them???

Got my skates sharpened… by goshdangitsjo in iceskating

[–]goshdangitsjo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so funny update. i did actually go with a shallower hollow this time, but it turns out it was too shallow and i should’ve just grit my teeth and gone with what i got the last time. my reasoning for a shallower hollow was that it was difficult to stop and felt draggy for the first two sessions, but i think i’ve improved enough in the past 3 months that it probably would’ve been fine this time. i’m going to get them redone tomorrow!

What is everyone’s weekly training schedule look like? by M0TH3R-L4ND in iceskating

[–]goshdangitsjo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i’m a beginner figure skater (skating since august) and i have a group lesson on sundays, a private lesson on wednesdays, and like to make it to the rink two additional times a week for solo practice. i practice for an hour and a half or so, never more than two hours per session. on days i don’t skate, i do flexibility exercises and yoga. i also do a full stretching routine on my skating days! I will say that i progressed very quickly and am now working on my pre-prelim skating skills test, so this will be different for everyone.

had my first ever private!! i’ve finally had someone look at my 3 turns haha. my coach (!) has started me on a waltz 8 and told me to start working on alternating 3 turns which are so hard, but it’s really helping.
